WoW Forever Ruins of Lordaeron Guide: Bosses, Quests, Loot
WoW Forever Ruins of Lordaeron: level 15–20, all 7 bosses and loot, how to spawn Viktor the Vile and The Abandoned, 10 quests, Crest spots and a route.

In this guide 12 sections
Ruins of Lordaeron turns the fallen capital above the Undercity into a five-player dungeon for levels 15–20. It's one of the nine new dungeons in World of Warcraft: Forever, which launches on November 4, 2026. It isn't a corridor. It's an open city, a wide U of streets and squares, with two bosses you have to summon and a rare spawn most groups never see. This Ruins of Lordaeron guide covers the quests to take first, every boss with its trigger and loot, the Crest spawn points, and a route that finishes your faction's quests in one run.
Everything below comes from the beta client and beta runs. Blizzard's beta development notes listed the dungeon as open for testing. Treat loot as observed drops, not a complete table, and check the Adventure Guide in game after launch.
Quick summary
- Ruins of Lordaeron is a level 15–20 dungeon in Tirisfal Glades, entered from the courtyard above the Undercity. Its quests are level 21–22, so a party around level 17–18 gets full credit (The Forever Era; WoW Handbook).
- It has seven bosses: Witherfang, The Abandoned, The Butcher (often called "The Baron"), Rath'mael, the rare Lordaeron Captain, Viktor the Vile and Bjork. Rath'mael is the final boss.
- Two bosses need a trigger. Walk up to the knight statue for The Abandoned (three waves, then the boss). Click the Warm Kindling under the chimney for Viktor the Vile (five waves, then the boss) (WoW Handbook, Method).
- There are 10 quests: 6 Horde, 4 Alliance. Horde picks up four of them outside. All four Alliance quests start inside (WoW Handbook).
- A clear counts toward Novice Spelunker, a 1-point, account-wide Legacy challenge (The Forever Era).

Blizzard's September 12 announcement described the dungeon as a chance to "help the Forsaken reclaim the Ruins of Lordaeron" (quoted by The Forever Era). In original Classic, these streets were only the walk to the Undercity elevators. Forever opens the barricades and turns them into the dungeon.
How to get to Ruins of Lordaeron
Horde: enter from the courtyard above the Undercity. Orcs and Trolls take the zeppelin from Orgrimmar to Tirisfal. Tauren and Horde Skyborne travel to the zeppelins first (Method).
Alliance: it's the longest trip of any low-level dungeon. One route goes by boat from Stormwind Harbor to Auberdine, on to Menethil Harbor, by boat again to Southshore, and then overland north to Tirisfal (Method). WoW Handbook describes the last leg as a trek "through Silverpine waterways" or across from the Western Plaguelands. Alliance Skyborne can use the Stormwind portal to Dalaran as a shortcut; our Skyborne race guide covers the race's travel options.
| Faction | Fastest start | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Horde (Undead) | Brill or the Undercity | Take the four outside quests first |
| Horde (Orc, Troll) | Orgrimmar zeppelin to Tirisfal | |
| Horde (Tauren, Skyborne) | Your home zone, then the zeppelin | Extra leg |
| Alliance (most races) | Boats to Southshore, then north | Longest trip |
| Alliance Skyborne | Stormwind portal to Dalaran | Shortcut |
Ruins of Lordaeron quests: take them before you go in

| Crest of Lordaeron | 16 / 22 | The Crest, looted inside | Bring it to Oran Snakewrithe, Undercity | 8,300 XP; Small Sack of Gems |
Quest data comes from WoW Handbook's beta tables. The first four start outside, so pick them up on the way in.
Alliance (4 quests, all inside)
| Quest | Accept / quest level | Starts from | Task | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Abominable Creatures | 16 / 21 | Captain Truman, just inside the entrance | Head of the Baron | 6,200 XP; Monstrous Cleaver, Grave Shroud or Slain Baron's Signet |
| Bloodied Insignia | 16 / 22 | Insignia looted from skeletons | 10 Bloodied Insignias to General Marcus Jonathan, Stormwind | 9,750 XP, 45s; Duty Bound Leggings or Remembrance Armor |
| Crest of Lordaeron | 16 / 22 | The Crest, looted inside | Return it to Lady Dena Kennedy, Stormwind | 9,750 XP; Small Sack of Gems |
| Remember That I Love You | 15 / 22 | Blood-Stained Letter, looted by Edward's body | Bring it to Orphan Matron Nightingale, Stormwind | 9,750 XP |
How much XP the quests give
- Horde: 7,050 + 7,050 + 8,300 + 5,300 + 8,300 = 36,000 XP from five quests, plus The Wrath of Rath'mael (its XP isn't listed) and 450 Undercity reputation.
- Alliance: 6,200 + 9,750 × 3 = 35,450 XP from four quests. Three of them pay more because they send you back to Stormwind.
- Five of the ten quests offer an item choice, which is why most players run the dungeon at least once per character.
These sums are our arithmetic from the quest tables. For where this run fits in a full 1–60 plan, see the WoW Forever leveling guide.
Crest of Lordaeron locations
Both factions' Crest quests start from a dull gold shield that doesn't spawn in the same place every run (WoW Handbook, Method). Check these spots:
- Behind the door near The Butcher's area.
- The room beside Bjork's road.
- The pavilion and stairs in the upper left.
- The ends of the rooftop paths where the gargoyles roost.
If nobody has seen it after the first two spots, send one player along the rooftops while the rest of the group clears toward Bjork.
Ruins of Lordaeron bosses and loot
The order below follows WoW Handbook's clockwise route. Only Rath'mael is needed for a quest kill on the Horde side, so you can skip an event boss if the group is short on time.
| # | Boss | Where | Key abilities | Loot seen in beta runs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Witherfang | Patrols King's Alley, right side | Leech Poison on the tank; two spider adds | Atrophic Girdle, Witherbite Bracers, Segmented Spider Leg |
| 2 | The Butcher ("The Baron") | Bottom of the map, right of center | Knockout (about half the tank's health, then a stun) | Leftover Abomination Skin, Abomination Bones, Meathook Slicer; Abominable Head |
| 3 | The Abandoned (event) | Small hall with a knight statue, left side | Frost Nova, Chilled, Life Drain | Rotmender's Leggings, Grip of Fear, Scepter of the Abandoned |
| 4 | Bjork | Patrols the upper-left road | Knockback, a 3-second Anti-Magic Shield | Corpse Chopper, Bonerust Leggings, Tuskwrap Belt |
| 5 | Rath'mael (final boss) | Violet circle under the central dome | Flamestrike | Mirror of Rath'mael, Rotmender's Treads, Coldspire Staff |
| 6 | Viktor the Vile (hidden event) | Ruined house with a chimney, bottom left | Leech Poison, heavy melee | Vilewalkers, Bloodied Chestwraps, Vileblood Scimitar |
| – | Lordaeron Captain (rare) | Not up on most runs | – | Haunting Blade, Phantom Armor |
The Forever Era notes that the beta client carried no loot tables for this dungeon, so these lists are what players reported, not drop rates.
Witherfang
Clear a stretch of the spider's patrol path, then pull it into the cleared space. Kill Witherfang first, then the two spider adds (WoW Handbook, Method). Bring a class that can cure poison and keep the tank topped up through Leech Poison. Horde players loot the Highly Toxic Strain here.
The Butcher (The Baron)
Knockout takes about half the tank's health and stuns them. The Butcher then turns on the next player on his threat list, so have a Warrior, a bear Druid or a Hunter pet with Growl ready to taunt (WoW Handbook). He can be stunned, so spend your stuns here (Method). Our Warrior guide covers the tools a low-level Warrior tank has.
The Abandoned
Rest to full, then walk up to the knight's statue. It flares violet, and three waves of undead come with no break between them. The boss arrives with the fourth (WoW Handbook, Method). Stun the start of Life Drain, and lean on ranged damage, since Chilled slows melee attackers.
Bjork
Clear the ghoul packs along his road first, and kill the Ragged Ghoul in each pack before the others. Tank him with your back to a wall so the knockback doesn't throw the tank into a pack. Casters wait out the 3-second shield (WoW Handbook).
Rath'mael
Step out of Flamestrike, or stun him to stop the cast. He's one of the gentler final bosses at this level. Edward Heartweaver's body lies in the graveyard beside him. That's where the Horde finishes A Frightened Request and the Alliance loots the Blood-Stained Letter.
Viktor the Vile
Clear around the house, drink to full, then click the Warm Kindling under the chimney. Five waves follow with almost no pause, and Viktor arrives with the sixth (WoW Handbook, Method). The fight is a mana test for the healer. Keep loose skeletons off them, and crowd-control the waves rather than racing to the boss.
Ruins of Lordaeron route
This order is ours, built from WoW Handbook's route and the quest list. It clears every quest objective in one pass:
| Step | Do this | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Horde: take the four outside quests. Alliance: take Abominable Creatures from Captain Truman | Every kill then counts |
| 2 | Clear King's Alley and Witherfang | Intact Limbs and Insignias drop from trash all the way round |
| 3 | Kill The Butcher | Both factions need his head |
| 4 | Check the Crest spots near his area and Bjork's road | The Crest moves |
| 5 | Rest, then trigger The Abandoned | Three waves with no break |
| 6 | Bjork, then the rooftop Crest spot | Clear the ghouls first |
| 7 | Rath'mael and Edward's body | Finishes two quests |
| 8 | Optional: Viktor the Vile | The hardest pull; only with a full healer |
Example: a Horde group of four level-17 players and a level-15 healer arrives with all four outside quests. They follow the table, skip Viktor because the healer is the lowest level, and still finish every Horde quest. The healer can come back at 18 for the event boss.

Tips for alts, Hardcore and returning players
- Legacy: Novice Spelunker also needs Excavation Site: Wetlands, a level 26–31 dungeon. Once one character clears both, the point is account-wide, so alts don't need to repeat it for the point. Our Legacy guide shows what that point unlocks.
- Hardcore characters: both event bosses send waves with almost no break. Skip Viktor unless your group is ready. Our Hardcore guide covers the Hardcore ruleset.
- Recovering between pulls: Forever's campfires and camp objects give rest and buffs outside instances; the camping guide lists them.
- Picking a role: the class tier list ranks tanks and healers for dungeons at this level.
The WoW Forever hub collects the rest of our coverage of the new version.

FAQ
What level is Ruins of Lordaeron in WoW Forever?
The dungeon is level 15–20, and its quests are level 21–22. A group around level 17–18 gets full quest credit and can handle both event bosses (The Forever Era; WoW Handbook).
How do you spawn Viktor the Vile?
Click the Warm Kindling under the chimney in the ruined house in the bottom-left corner. Survive five waves of undead, and Viktor arrives with the sixth.
How do you start The Abandoned boss?
Walk up to the knight's statue in the small hall on the left side. After three waves, he leaps out with the fourth.
Where do Alliance players get Ruins of Lordaeron quests?
All four start inside: Captain Truman at the entrance gives Abominable Creatures, and three looted items start the others. Three of them are turned in at Stormwind.
Who is the final boss of Ruins of Lordaeron?
Rath'mael, under the central dome. Killing him completes the Horde quest The Wrath of Rath'mael.
How long does Ruins of Lordaeron take?
Plan on about 50 minutes to an hour for a full clear with both event bosses. Skipping Viktor the Vile saves the longest pull.
