WoW Forever Hall of Thanes: Entrance, Bosses, Quests, Loot
WoW Forever Hall of Thanes (level 13–18): the entrance under Ironforge, all 4 bosses with tactics and loot, 5 quests worth 20,550 XP and a full route.

In this guide 13 sections
The Hall of Thanes is WoW Forever's level 13–18 dungeon beneath Ironforge. It gives the Alliance an early dungeon to match the Horde's Ragefire Chasm. It's one straight path: haunted dwarven tombs first, then Dark Iron tunnels, four bosses, and five quests worth about 20,000 XP together. This WoW Forever Hall of Thanes guide covers how to get in, every quest and where to pick it up, each boss with its abilities and loot, the trash that actually kills groups, and a route that finishes every quest in one run. Quest and boss data match WoW Handbook's dungeon page (updated October 24), and Forever launches on November 4, 2026.
Quick summary
- Levels 13–18, entered through a door beside the throne room at the High Seat of Ironforge, which leads down into Old Ironforge (The Forever Era; WoW Handbook).
- Four bosses: Faldrim Anvilmar, Magmatus (the client calls it "Infurnus"), Plunder and Durgen Dirgehammer (The Forever Era, WoW Handbook, Method).
- Five quests, about 20,550 XP total. Pick up three before you enter, including Old Ironforge Incursion from a short Dun Morogh chain (WoW Handbook; our math).
- The Dark Iron half is the hard half. Interrupt Summoners, sidestep Engineer bombs, and clear Looters before Durgen's Fear (Method, WoW Handbook).
- It may count toward Novice Spelunker, a 1-point Legacy challenge. The challenge's client criterion names "Ragefire Chasm or Hall of Thanes," while its description names Ruins of Lordaeron and the Excavation Site (The Forever Era). Check the challenge tracker after your first clear.

Where is the Hall of Thanes entrance?
Alliance: go to the High Seat in Ironforge and take the door beside the throne room down into Old Ironforge. Two quest givers wait at the gate: Afadra Dunwall above the entrance gate and Thom Filch on the entrance bridge (WoW Handbook).
Horde: Method's route starts in the Undercity and goes through Silverpine Forest, Hillsbrad Foothills, Arathi Highlands, Wetlands and Loch Modan to Dun Morogh. Method notes community speculation about a secret Horde teleporter quest but says "so far we have not found any quests."
Run the Dun Morogh pre-quest
Old Ironforge Incursion is the only dungeon quest you get away from the dungeon. It ends a short chain (WoW Handbook):
- Beldin Steelgrill in Kharanos sends you to Earthseer Farsen (A Visitor to Dun Morogh).
- Farsen gives Farsen's Watch and Nip 'Em in the Bud: kill 10 Dark Iron Spies at Ironband's Compound.
- A spy drops the Dark Iron Map, which starts Underground Map.
- Bring the map to Farsen (64.8, 58.5, Dun Morogh). He gives you Old Ironforge Incursion.
Hall of Thanes quests
| Quest | Accept / quest level | Giver | Task | XP and money | Item choice | Reputation |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Old Ironforge Incursion | 9 / 16 | Earthseer Farsen, Dun Morogh | Durgen Dirgehammer's Head | 4,950 XP, 8s | Calibrated Blunderbuss, Ironforge Greathammer or Deepblaze | Ironforge +100, Gnomeregan Exiles +100 |
| Important Heirlooms | 10 / 15 | Thom Filch, entrance bridge (32.4, 44.8) | 8 Dwarven Heirlooms | 4,600 XP, 7s | Dwarven Tome or Tomb Robber's Gloves | Gadgetzan +100 |
| The Restless Dead | 10 / 15 | Afadra Dunwall, above the gate (33.2, 47.6) | 15 Enraged Apparitions, 10 Tormented Souls, rest Anvilmar's spirit | 3,550 XP, 7s | Dusty Belt or Cryptwalker Bracers | Ironforge +100 |
| An Ancient Grudge | 10 / 15 | Ghostly Attendant, west wing (inside) | Put Faldrim Anvilmar to rest | 3,550 XP | Catacomb Cloak or Deepgrave Trousers | – |
| The Treaty of Understanding | 9 / 16 | Treaty, from the tablet in the vault | Deliver it to King Magni Bronzebeard | 3,900 XP, 16s | – | Ironforge +100, Gnomeregan Exiles +100 |
Our math: 4,950 + 4,600 + 3,550 + 3,550 + 3,900 = 20,550 XP and 38 silver, plus 300 Ironforge, 200 Gnomeregan Exiles and 100 Gadgetzan reputation.
Watch the dangerous trash
| Mob | Threat | Answer | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enraged Apparition, Tormented Soul | Weak ghosts in the tombs | Count kills for The Restless Dead | WoW Handbook, Method |
| Dark Iron Summoner | Heavy Fireballs; Summon Fiery Assistant | Interrupt or stun. Pull around a corner so they come to you | Method, WoW Handbook |
| Dark Iron Engineer | Bombs aimed at a spot when the cast starts | Step off the spot. The bomb lands where you were | Method |
| Dark Iron Looter | Poisoned daggers, often with Bloodhound Runts | Keep pulls to one group | Method |
| Lesser Stone Golem | Hits hard and fast, can't be outrun | Kill or off-tank; never kite | Method, WoW Handbook |
The last pack before Durgen is a golem, a Looter and a Summoner. Polymorph the Summoner and kill the other two first (Method, WoW Handbook).
Hall of Thanes bosses and loot
| # | Boss | Where | Abilities | Loot (observed) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Faldrim Anvilmar | Anvilmar's Rest, west tombs | Mind Blast (interrupt), Anvilmar's Curse | Ephemeral Choker, Aetherwisp Bracers, Spiritwraith Drape |
| 2 | Magmatus ("Infurnus" in the client) | In front of the great drill, with a Dark Iron Summoner | Fire Nova, Combustion | Kindlegem Girdle, Flamefist Grips, Fang of Magmatus |
| 3 | Plunder | Patrols the hall before the vault | Knock Away | Golemguard Chest, Golemheart Stave, Treads of the Protector Golem |
| 4 | Durgen Dirgehammer | Central platform of the vault, with two Lesser Stone Golems | 8-second Fear, Rend on the tank | Durgen's Crescent Axe, Direhammer Leggings, Robes of the Disgraced Thane |
Faldrim Anvilmar
Clear the Enraged Apparitions in Anvilmar's Rest first. Pulling him with a pack is the only real danger (Method). Interrupt Mind Blast. Our take: decurse anyone except the tank if your group is struggling on damage.
Magmatus
Kill the patrolling Summoner before you pull. Then the tank drags Magmatus away while the group kills the Summoner beside him (WoW Handbook, Method). Fire Nova hits everyone nearby, so use ranged damage where you can. Healers should watch Combustion on any player, not just the tank. WoW Handbook marks Magmatus and Plunder as optional.
Plunder
Clear the packs along his path, then tank him in a corner or pull him back into the room you came from. A knockback into a fresh pack is "the only way this goes wrong" (WoW Handbook).
Durgen Dirgehammer
Clear every Dark Iron Looter around the platform so the Fear sends players into empty space (Method, WoW Handbook). Then off-tank the two Lesser Stone Golems, or burn Durgen first and kill the golems after (WoW Handbook; Method). Fear Ward, once a Dwarf-only Priest spell, is trained by every Priest race in Forever, so cast it on the tank before the pull. Our Priest guide covers the change.
Loot his head for Old Ironforge Incursion, and read the vault tablet to start The Treaty of Understanding (WoW Handbook).
Best Hall of Thanes loot
The beta client doesn't carry stats for this dungeon's drops, so no stat-based ranking can be checked yet (The Forever Era). Two rules still help. The final quest, Old Ironforge Incursion, offers the strongest guaranteed reward: a choice of Calibrated Blunderbuss, Ironforge Greathammer or Deepblaze. And every unique boss item in Forever's dungeons is Rare quality (Blizzard's Deep Dive recap), so Durgen's Crescent Axe and the Robes of the Disgraced Thane are worth a roll for anyone who can use them. Compare tooltips with your current weapon at launch.
Hall of Thanes walkthrough: the best route
This plan is ours, built from WoW Handbook's route and the quest list:
| Step | Do this |
|---|---|
| 1 | Finish Farsen's chain in Dun Morogh, then take Thom Filch's and Afadra Dunwall's quests at the gate |
| 2 | Clear the tombs, collecting Dwarven Heirlooms and ghost kills |
| 3 | Take An Ancient Grudge from the Ghostly Attendant, then kill Faldrim |
| 4 | Enter the Dark Iron tunnels. Pull Summoners around corners |
| 5 | Kill the patrolling Summoner, then Magmatus |
| 6 | Clear Plunder's hall, then tank him in a corner |
| 7 | Clear the Looters, then Durgen. Check the vault for any Heirlooms you're missing |
| 8 | Read the tablet, then hand in to King Magni in Ironforge |
Example: a level 15 Dwarf Paladin tank, a Gnome Priest, a Human Mage, a Night Elf Rogue and a Human Hunter (new in Forever; see our Hunter guide) meet at the High Seat. The Paladin has already done Farsen's chain in Dun Morogh, so the group shares Old Ironforge Incursion before entering. They loot Heirlooms as they clear the tombs, the Mage Polymorphs the Summoner in the last pack, and the Priest's Fear Ward goes on the tank for Durgen. All five quests are done in one run, and the walk to King Magni is a few steps away.
Hall of Thanes vs other dungeons at this level
| Dungeon | Level | Faction lean | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Hall of Thanes | 13–18 | Alliance | WoW Handbook |
| Ragefire Chasm | 13–18 | Horde | WoW Handbook |
| Ruins of Lordaeron | 15–20 | Horde | The Forever Era |
| The Deadmines | 16–26 | Alliance | WoW Handbook |
| Wailing Caverns | 17–24 | Horde | WoW Handbook |
WoW Handbook notes that in Classic, the Alliance had to wait for the Deadmines. See our Ruins of Lordaeron guide for the Horde's new dungeon, the Excavation Site guide for the next new Alliance-side dungeon at 26–31, and our new dungeons guide for all nine. Where these runs fit between questing zones is in our leveling guide.
For alts and returning players
- Legacy: the Novice Spelunker criterion lists Hall of Thanes as an alternative to Ragefire Chasm. Once one character finishes the challenge, the point is account-wide (The Forever Era; our Legacy guide).
- Tanks: this is the first dungeon most Alliance tanks see. Our class tier list explains why Protection Warriors and Paladins lead, and the Warrior guide covers early tanking talents. Bear tanks can start here too; see the Druid guide.
- Hardcore characters: Durgen's Fear into an uncleared Looter pack is the classic wipe. Clear the whole platform first (our assessment from Method's notes; see our Hardcore guide).
- New race and class combos: Dwarf Shamans and Gnome Priests start in Dun Morogh, next door (WoW Handbook; our race and class guide).
- Returning Classic players: the sealed doors beneath the High Seat now open. Old Ironforge is new ground (WoW Handbook, Method).
Alliance players planning their next steps can browse the WoW Forever hub for zones, classes and dungeons.
