TBC Anniversary Hunter Guide: Phase 3.5 Builds, BiS and Pets
TBC Anniversary hunter guide for Phase 3.5: BM, MM and Survival builds, 142 hit cap, best raid pet, Zul'Aman and Black Temple BiS, and shot rotations.

In this guide 15 sections
Quick summary
- Beast Mastery is the main raid build at 42/19/0. Ferocious Inspiration stacks for each BM Hunter in a group (Warcraft Tavern).
- Survival (7/20/34) raises the whole raid's damage with Expose Weakness. Marksmanship (14/44/3) brings Trueshot Aura.
- Hit cap: 9% = 142 rating. That's 126 with a Draenei in your group and 95 with a Balance Druid. Survival's Surefooted removes 3% more.
- Phase 3.5 BiS adds Signet of Primal Wrath, Berserker's Call and Dagger of Bad Mojo from Zul'Aman to the Gronnstalker's (Tier 6) core.
- Best raid pet: a Ravager for Gore, with a Cat or Raptor close behind (Warcraft Tavern).
- Best races: Orc for Horde, and Draenei or Dwarf for Alliance PvE; Dwarf for Alliance PvP.
This TBC Anniversary hunter guide is current for Phase 3.5, the Zul'Aman update that went live on October 22, 2026. Black Temple, Mount Hyjal and Zul'Aman are all open, and Blizzard's update notes removed the Black Temple and Hyjal attunements. Some sites, Warcraft Tavern among them, label this content "Phase 4". In this guide, "Phase 4" means Sunwell Plateau, which has no release date yet.
Is Hunter good in TBC Anniversary? Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Strong, steady damage in every phase, with BM near the top of physical damage | Your damage depends on Auto Shot timing, so lag and movement cost more than for casters |
| Misdirection makes every pull safer for the tank | You manage a pet, ammo, a quiver and pet food as well as your own gear |
| Three useful raid buffs: Ferocious Inspiration, Trueshot Aura and Expose Weakness | Raid spots for Hunters are limited, because one buff per party is usually enough |
| The easiest class to level solo, because the pet tanks | Hit cap and stat weights change with your group's buffs |
Hunter is easy to start and hard to master. The basics take an evening. Clean Steady Shot weaving, pet control and Misdirection timing take much longer. Our DPS tier list compares Hunters with every other damage spec.
Know what Hunters got in TBC
- Steady Shot: the core of every rotation.
- Misdirection: sends your threat to the tank.
- Aspect of the Viper: restores mana from your damage.
- Kill Command: pet attack unlocked after your ranged crits.
- Serpent's Swiftness: 20% haste for you and your pet.
- Pet scaling: pets now inherit your stats.
- Ammo: reworked to scale with damage.
- Traps: can be placed in combat.
Pick your spec and build
| Spec | Build (Warcraft Tavern) | Raid role | Key talents |
|---|---|---|---|
| Beast Mastery | 42/19/0 | Top personal DPS and party damage | Mortal Shots, Frenzy, Ferocious Inspiration, Bestial Wrath, The Beast Within, Serpent's Swiftness |
| Marksmanship | 14/44/3 | Trueshot Aura party buff | Mortal Shots, Trueshot Aura, Careful Aim |
| Survival | 7/20/34 | Expose Weakness raid buff | Expose Weakness, Mortal Shots, Surefooted (+3% hit) |
- Warcraft Tavern says BM has about 1 flexible point. For indoor raids, you can swap Bestial Swiftness for 2/2 Improved Mend Pet.
- Marksmanship mostly swaps between Monster Slaying and Humanoid Slaying depending on the boss.
- Survival "revolves almost entirely around Expose Weakness," so aim for close to 100% uptime.
Example: a raid with three Hunters often runs two BM in the same party so Ferocious Inspiration stacks, and one Survival for Expose Weakness. This follows Warcraft Tavern's notes on both talents.
Choose your race
| Faction | Race | PvE (Warcraft Tavern) | PvP (Warcraft Tavern BM PvP guide) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alliance | Draenei | Heroic Presence: +1% party hit; only one per party is needed | Strong alternative |
| Alliance | Dwarf | Gun Specialization, the only Alliance DPS racial for Hunters | Best: Stoneform and Frost Resistance |
| Alliance | Night Elf | Shadowmeld with Feign Death; niche | "Meme pick" |
| Horde | Orc | Blood Fury, Command (+5% pet damage), Hardiness; best | — |
| Horde | Troll | Berserking; Beast Slaying is niche | — |
Warcraft Tavern says neither Alliance race brings "anything amazing," so pick Draenei if your party lacks one, otherwise Dwarf.
Hit the cap and order your stats
Stat priority (Warcraft Tavern):
- BM and MM: Hit to cap > Armor Penetration > Agility > Crit > Attack Power.
- Survival: Hit > Agility > Armor Penetration > Crit > Attack Power.
Warcraft Tavern notes Armor Penetration gear is mostly unavailable until Sunwell Plateau.
| Party buffs | Hit rating for 9% |
|---|---|
| None | 142 |
| Draenei Heroic Presence | 126 |
| Balance Druid (Improved Faerie Fire) | 95 |
| Both | 79 |
| Survival with Surefooted | 3% less than the row above (about 47 rating less, our arithmetic at 15.77 rating per 1%) |
- Agility: each point gives 1 Attack Power and 0.552 crit rating, and Blessing of Kings boosts it.
- Crit: BM wants at least one crit every 5 seconds to keep Kill Command available.
- Warcraft Tavern says aim for 95 rating in most groups.
Equip Phase 3.5 best-in-slot gear

Warcraft Tavern says to use the two-hander if you melee-weave. Otherwise dual-wield one-handers with a stone on both.
Zul'Aman and G'eras alternatives (Warcraft Tavern):
- Zul'Aman: Coif of the Jungle Stalker (Hex Lord), Bladeangel's Money Belt (Nalorakk), Trollbane (timed chest), Ancient Amani Longbow (Zul'jin).
- G'eras badge vendor: Master Assassin Wristwraps, Nyn'jah's Tabi Boots.
Token bosses are in our Tier 6 guide. Every Zul'Aman drop by spec is in our Zul'Aman loot guide, and our badge gear guide covers which G'eras items are worth the badges.
Gem and enchant
| Socket | Gem (Warcraft Tavern BM) | Epic version |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Relentless Earthstorm Diamond | Same |
| Red | Delicate Living Ruby (Agility) | Delicate Crimson Spinel |
| Yellow | Wicked Noble Topaz | Smooth Lionseye |
| Blue | Shifting Nightseye | Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst |
You need 2 gems of each color for the meta, and should use red gems where socket bonuses are poor (Warcraft Tavern). Since October 22, Magtheridon's Black Sack of Gems and the Jewelcrafter's Brilliant Glass can contain epic gems (Blizzard). Our gems and enchants guide lists them for every spec.
| Slot | Enchant (source) |
|---|---|
| Head | Glyph of Ferocity (Cenarion Expedition revered) |
| Shoulders | Greater Inscription of Vengeance (Aldor) or of the Blade (Scryers) |
| Back | Greater Agility |
| Chest | Exceptional Stats |
| Wrists | Assault |
| Hands | Superior Agility |
| Legs | Nethercobra Leg Armor (Leatherworking) |
| Feet | Cat's Swiftness |
| Rings | Stats (Enchanting only) |
| Weapon | Major Agility (two-hander) or Agility |
| Ranged | Stabilized Eternium Scope (Engineering) |
Play the rotation
Before the pull (Warcraft Tavern): pet out and happy, Aspect of the Hawk, Hunter's Mark if you're the marker, Misdirection on the tank, and a pre-cast Aimed Shot that lands on the pull.
Core rule: Steady Shot can delay Auto Shot, so fire it right after each Auto Shot. Use Kill Command whenever it's available.
| Situation | Cycle |
|---|---|
| Normal haste (effective weapon speed about 1.3–1.6 s) | Auto Shot → Steady Shot (or Multi-Shot) → repeat (1:1) |
| Rapid Fire, Heroism, Drums, Haste Potion | Auto → Auto → Steady Shot (2:1) |
| Several haste effects stacked | Auto → Auto → Auto → Steady Shot (3:1) |
| Slow bow, no haste | Auto → Steady → Multi → Auto → Steady → Auto → Steady → Arcane → repeat |
| Melee weaving | Auto → Steady → Raptor Strike → Auto → Steady → repeat |
AoE: Kill Command, Multi-Shot on cooldown, Auto Shot and Steady Shot after Auto.
Cooldowns and utility: Bestial Wrath is BM's biggest cooldown and Rapid Fire gives haste. Survival usually keeps Hunter's Mark up. Feign Death saves you in wipes. Use Aspect of the Viper only when you must, since it lowers your DPS.
Pick your raid pet
The pet does a large share of a Beast Mastery Hunter's damage, so the family matters. Warcraft Tavern's pet guide ranks them this way for raids:
| Pet | Key ability | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Ravager | Gore, which can deal double damage | Default raid pet for BM. Tame a Rip-Blade Ravager at least once, since it teaches Gore Rank 9 |
| Cat or Raptor | Claw or Bite | About even with each other, a little behind the Ravager. A good pick if you like the look |
| Wind Serpent | Lightning Breath | A caster pet that can beat a Ravager on some fights once your gear and crit are high |
Feed your pet so it stays happy, since an unhappy pet does less damage. Teach it Avoidance before raiding so it survives boss AoE. Bring pet food, because Zul'Aman's timed run leaves little time to restock.
Pick professions
| Profession | Hunter perk (Warcraft Tavern) |
|---|---|
| Engineering | Sappers, goggles, Stabilized Eternium Scope; many raid guilds require it |
| Leatherworking | Primal Intent set, Belt of Deep Shadow, drums for your group |
| Enchanting | +8 all stats from ring enchants |
| Jewelcrafting | +16 Attack Power from profession gems |
| Blacksmithing | Lunar Crescent and Mooncleaver (Axesmithing) |
Compare classes in our best professions guide. Leatherworkers got new Knothide Quiver and Knothide Ammo Pouch patterns from Outland faction vendors on October 22 (Blizzard). Our Leatherworking leveling guide covers those and the drums.
Level a Hunter and tame pets
Warcraft Tavern's leveling guide covers pets:
- Taming and stabling: you can tame a pet from level 10 and own 3, keeping 2 in the stable.
- Happiness: set by feeding the right food.
- Loyalty: grows with your level and gives Training Points to teach abilities.
- Family abilities: Screech (bat, owl, carrion bird), Furious Howl (wolf), Lightning Breath (wind serpent), Gore (boar, ravager), Fire Breath (dragonhawk).
Level as BM and let the pet hold aggro when a pull gets tough. Routes are in our 1–70 leveling guide.
PvP (Warcraft Tavern): BM PvP builds all reach The Beast Within. The choice is Aimed Shot (BM/MM) or Deterrence (BM/SV).
Avoid these mistakes
- Firing Steady Shot in the middle of the swing timer, which delays Auto Shot.
- Leaving Aspect of the Viper on after mana recovers.
- Stacking hit past 95 rating in a group with a Balance Druid.
- Two Draenei in one party; Heroic Presence doesn't stack.
- Forgetting Misdirection on the first pull of each trash pack in Zul'Aman's timed run, where tanks pull fast.
Return, boost, or gear an alt
- Returning: check your hit against the buff table, swap to the Zul'Aman rings and trinkets, and spend badges on Master Assassin Wristwraps or Nyn'jah's Tabi Boots. Badges now drop from every boss in Karazhan, Gruul, Magtheridon, Serpentshrine, Tempest Keep and Zul'Aman (Blizzard).
- Fresh or boosted 70: heroics and Karazhan, then Zul'Aman. Heroic keys only need Honored since October 22. Our Karazhan raid guide and fresh 70 catch-up guide lay out the order.
- Alt: a Hunter is a common pick for a second character because the pet tanks while you level (Warcraft Tavern).
- Arena: Beast Mastery is also the main Hunter arena build. Our PvP arena comps guide covers the comps Hunters fit into.
