TBC Anniversary Priest Guide: Phase 3.5 Holy, Shadow, Disc, BiS
TBC Anniversary priest guide for Phase 3.5: Holy, Shadow and Discipline builds, stat priority, the 76-rating Shadow hit cap, races and Zul'Aman BiS.

In this guide 14 sections
Quick summary
- Holy is the raid healing spec. Icy Veins lists a Circle of Healing "Main Healing" build, a Pain Suppression build for early raids, and a Divine Spirit build that buffs casters.
- Shadow is a raid spec, not off-meta. Warcraft Tavern's Shadow build is 14/0/47. Vampiric Touch returns 5% of your damage as party mana, and Misery adds 5% magic damage taken (Icy Veins).
- Shadow hit cap: 76 rating after 5/5 Shadow Focus (Warcraft Tavern). Healers have no cap.
- Best races: Human for Alliance and Troll for Horde healers.
- Phase 3.5 BiS: the Absolution (Tier 6) set plus Zul'Aman's Brooch of Nature's Mercy for healers, and Loop of Cursed Bones and Hex Shrunken Head for Shadow.
This TBC Anniversary priest guide is current for Phase 3.5, the Zul'Aman update that went live on October 22, 2026. Black Temple, Mount Hyjal and Zul'Aman are open, and Blizzard's update notes removed the Black Temple and Hyjal attunements. Warcraft Tavern and Wowhead call this content "Phase 4", so their "Phase 4" gear lists are the ones used below. Sunwell Plateau, Blizzard's Phase 4, has no release date yet.
Is Priest good in TBC Anniversary? Pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| Holy has the strongest raid healing toolkit: Circle of Healing, Prayer of Mending and Prayer of Healing | Holy tank healing costs more mana than a Paladin's |
| Shadow returns mana to its party through Vampiric Touch, so raids want at least one | Shadow's own damage is lower than other casters'; its value is partly in the party buff |
| Fear Ward, Mass Dispel, Dispel Magic and Prayer of Fortitude help every raid | Cloth armor and no escape tools beyond Fade and Psychic Scream |
| Discipline is one of the best arena healers | Discipline gives up Circle of Healing, so it's a weaker raid healer |
Priest is a good first healer: the heals are easy to learn, and the hard part is choosing the right one and managing mana. Our healer and tank tier list explains where Holy and Discipline rank and why, and our DPS tier list covers Shadow.
Know what Priests got in TBC
| New tool | What it does |
|---|---|
| Circle of Healing (Holy) | Instant group heal; the core of raid Holy |
| Prayer of Mending | Bouncing heal that triggers when the target takes damage |
| Binding Heal | Heals you and a target at once |
| Pain Suppression (Discipline) | Big damage reduction on one target |
| Mass Dispel | AoE dispel that removes otherwise undispellable effects |
| Shadowfiend | Pet that returns mana as it deals damage |
| Shadow Word: Death | Instant Shadow nuke that hurts you if the target survives |
| Fear Ward | Now available to all Priest races |
Icy Veins adds the Shadow tools that make it a raid spec: Vampiric Touch (party mana), Misery (+5% magic damage taken), Shadow Weaving (up to +10% Shadow damage taken) and Improved Vampiric Embrace (heals your party for 25% of your damage).
Pick your spec and build
| Spec | Build (source) | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Holy Main Healing | Circle of Healing; recommended PvE spec (Icy Veins) | Raid healer, best from Phase 3 on |
| Holy Pain Suppression | Discipline dip for Pain Suppression; "great for early raids, especially with a Protection Paladin main tank" | Tank healer |
| Holy Divine Spirit | Improved Divine Spirit for raid spell damage | Support healer; usually replaced as damage rises |
| Shadow basic | 14/0/47 (Warcraft Tavern) | Raid DPS and mana battery |
| Shadow mana | 14/0/47, mana-focused points | When you run out of mana |
| Discipline PvP | Pain Suppression, Focused Will, Improved Mana Burn, Silent Resolve, Unbreakable Will; Holy dip for Healing Focus, Blessed Recovery, Spell Warding | Arena healer |
Holy talents to take: Meditation, Inner Focus, Mental Agility, Holy Nova, Improved Healing, Spirit of Redemption, Holy Concentration and Circle of Healing. Move points into Silent Resolve if you pull threat.
Shadow talents to take: Meditation, Inner Focus, Shadow Affinity (-25% threat), Shadow Focus (+2% spell hit per point), Mind Flay, Shadow Weaving, Improved Vampiric Embrace, Shadowform (+15% Shadow damage), Misery and Vampiric Touch. With enough hit gear, move Shadow Focus points into Focused Mind.
Example: a 25-player raid running two Shadow Priests puts both in groups with the most mana users, because Vampiric Touch returns mana only to your own party.
Choose your race
Warcraft Tavern says Priest race matters more than for other classes, because of Priest-only racial spells:
| Faction | Race |
|---|---|
| Alliance | Human |
| Alliance | Draenei |
| Alliance | Dwarf |
| Alliance | Night Elf |
| Horde | Troll |
| Horde | Blood Elf |
| Horde | Undead |
Know your stat priority
| Spec | Priority (Warcraft Tavern) |
|---|---|
| Holy and Discipline | Spell Haste > Healing Power > Spell Crit > Spirit > Intellect > MP5 > Stamina |
| Shadow | Spell Power (Shadow Power) > Spell Hit to 76 rating > Spell Crit > Intellect > Spirit |
- Shadow hit: bosses are three levels above you, so you start at 83% hit and can reach 99%. Shadow Focus gives 10%, leaving 6% (76 rating) from gear.
- Healer crits heal for 150% and apply Inspiration to the target, which is valuable on tanks.
- Haste speeds up casts and the global cooldown but not heal-over-time ticks.
Equip Phase 3.5 best-in-slot gear
These are Warcraft Tavern's ideal sets for Black Temple, Hyjal and Zul'Aman. Holy and Discipline share one list, taken from its Holy Priest best-in-slot guide.

| Hands | Gloves of Absolution (Azgalor) | Handguards of Absolution (Azgalor) |
| Waist | Belt of Divine Guidance (Illidari Council) | Waistwrap of Infinity (Supremus) |
| Legs | Leggings of Eternity (Archimonde) | Leggings of Devastation (Shahraz) |
| Feet | Boots of the Divine Light (Hyjal trash) | Footpads of Madness (Jan'alai) |
| Neck | Brooch of Nature's Mercy (Akil'zon) | Loop of Cursed Bones (Zul'jin) |
| Back | Shroud of the Highborne (Illidan) | Nethervoid Cloak (BT trash) |
| Rings | Blessed Band of Karabor (BT trash) + Coral Band of the Revived | Mana Attuned Band (ZA timed chest) + Ring of Ancient Knowledge (BT trash) |
| Trinkets | Essence of the Martyr (G'eras) + Memento of Tyrande (Illidan) | Icon of the Silver Crescent (G'eras) + Hex Shrunken Head (Hex Lord) |
| Main hand | Crystal Spire of Karabor (Illidan) | Zhar'doom, Greatstaff of the Devourer (Illidan) |
| Off hand | Scepter of Purification (Archimonde) | — (two-hander) |
| Wand | Naaru-Blessed Life Rod (Reliquary of Souls) | Carved Witch Doctor's Stick (G'eras) |
Zul'Aman and G'eras alternatives (Warcraft Tavern):
- Healers: Robes of Heavenly Purpose (Nalorakk), Two-Toed Sandals and Dark Blessing (Zul'jin), Signet of the Quiet Forest (timed chest), and G'eras' Wristguards of Tranquil Thought, Light-Blessed Bonds, Voodoo Shaker and Carved Witch Doctor's Stick.
- Shadow: Shadowcaster's Drape (timed chest), Studious Wraps and Pantaloons of Arcane Annihilation (G'eras), plus Fetish of the Primal Gods or Orb of the Soul-Eater (G'eras) if you use a one-hander.
Warcraft Tavern notes healers should balance mana regeneration against throughput. If you finish fights with full mana, trade Spirit and MP5 for Haste and Healing Power. Our Tier 6 guide covers which bosses drop each token, our Zul'Aman loot guide lists every raid drop by spec, and our badge gear guide ranks the G'eras items above by badge cost.
Gem and enchant
| Socket | Holy / Discipline (Warcraft Tavern) | Shadow |
|---|---|---|
| Meta | Insightful Earthstorm Diamond | Mystical Skyfire Diamond |
| Red | Teardrop Living Ruby, or Teardrop Crimson Spinel; Kailee's Rose (Jewelcrafters) | Runed Living Ruby, or Runed Crimson Spinel |
| Yellow | Luminous Noble Topaz, or Luminous Fire Opal | Potent Noble Topaz, or Potent Pyrestone |
| Blue | Purified Shadow Pearl, or Purified Shadowsong Amethyst | Glowing Nightseye, or Glowing Shadowsong Amethyst |
Healers need at least 2 gems of each color for the Insightful meta. Shadow uses red in almost every socket; its meta needs more blue than yellow gems, so a single blue works if you use no yellows. Since October 22, Magtheridon's Black Sack of Gems and the Jewelcrafter's Brilliant Glass can contain epic gems (Blizzard), so the epic options are easier to find.
| Slot | Holy / Discipline | Shadow |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Glyph of Renewal (Honor Hold / Thrallmar Revered) | Glyph of Power (Sha'tar Revered) |
| Shoulders | Greater Inscription of Faith (Aldor) or of the Oracle (Scryers) | Greater Inscription of Discipline (Aldor) or of the Orb (Scryers) |
| Chest | Major Spirit | Exceptional Stats |
| Wrists | Superior Healing | Spellpower |
| Hands | Major Healing | Major Spellpower |
| Legs | Golden Spellthread | Runic Spellthread |
| Feet | Boar's Speed or Spirit | Boar's Speed |
| Rings | Healing Power (Enchanting only) | Spellpower (Enchanting only) |
| Weapon | Major Healing | Soulfrost |
More reputation sources are in our gems and enchants guide. Glyph of Renewal is the healer head enchant from Honor Hold or Thrallmar at Revered, covered in our Honor Hold and Thrallmar reputation guide. For the shoulder inscriptions, see our Aldor vs Scryers guide.
Play each spec
Holy and Discipline heal priority (Warcraft Tavern):
- Before the pull: Prayer of Fortitude and Prayer of Spirit, Shadow Protection if there's Shadow damage, Inner Fire, Fear Ward on your assigned target, and Prayer of Mending on the tank. Discipline decides its Power Infusion target in advance.
- Power Word: Shield anyone who might die before a heal lands. Don't pre-shield Warrior and Druid tanks, because they need to take damage for rage.
- Prayer of Mending on cooldown on whoever will take damage.
- Circle of Healing (or Prayer of Healing) when at least 3 party members are hurt.
- Binding Heal when you and someone else both need healing.
- Flash Heal for urgent healing, max-rank Greater Heal for big deficits, and Renew on tanks.
- Downranked Greater Heal to top players off without overhealing.
Use Inner Focus on your most expensive heal, and Shadowfiend for mana.
Shadow single target:
- Buff, then pre-cast Vampiric Touch to land on the pull.
- Mind Blast on cooldown.
- Keep up Vampiric Touch and Shadow Word: Pain. Refresh them when they fall off, not before.
- Shadow Word: Death on cooldown if you can survive the backlash and the next boss mechanic.
- Mind Flay as filler. Clip it after the second tick when something else comes off cooldown.
- Racial spells (Shadowguard, Devouring Plague, Starshards) go above Mind Flay.
Shadow AoE: Shadow Word: Pain and Vampiric Touch on every target that will live 15 seconds or more, then the single-target priority. Shadowfiend is Shadow's main cooldown; don't use it near full mana.
Pick professions
| Profession | Perk (Warcraft Tavern) |
|---|---|
| Enchanting | Healers: +40 healing and +14 spell damage from both ring enchants. Shadow: +24 spell power |
| Tailoring | "Near-mandatory" for Shadow: Frozen Shadoweave set (Shadoweave Tailoring); Bracers of Nimble Thought; crafted healing gear |
| Engineering | Goggles, Super Sapper Charge, utility |
| Jewelcrafting | Profession-only epic gems (Kailee's Rose for healers) |
| Leatherworking | Party haste drums |
Compare classes in our best professions guide, and see our Tailoring leveling guide for the Shadoweave route.
Level a Priest and play PvP
Leveling: Shadow levels fastest. Icy Veins notes Spirit Tap gives 100% more Spirit after a kill and lets 50% of Spirit regen continue while casting. Follow our 1–70 leveling guide and use Dual Spec to keep a healing spec for dungeons.
Mass Dispel can remove effects that normal dispels can't, such as Divine Shield and Ice Block. PvP: Discipline is the main arena healer. Our PvP arena comps guide covers the comps Priests fit into.
Avoid these mistakes
- Pre-shielding rage tanks so they start the pull with no rage.
- Refreshing Shadow Word: Pain early and clipping a tick.
- Spamming Circle of Healing on a single injured player.
- Running Shadow without 76 hit rating after Shadow Focus.
Return, boost, or gear an alt
- Returning: pair a Holy spec with Shadow on Dual Spec, re-gem with epic gems, and spend banked badges on Essence of the Martyr or Icon of the Silver Crescent. Badges now drop from every boss in Karazhan, Gruul, Magtheridon, Serpentshrine, Tempest Keep and Zul'Aman (Blizzard).
- Fresh or boosted 70: heal heroics and Karazhan, then Zul'Aman. Heroic keys only need Honored since October 22. Our Karazhan raid guide and fresh 70 catch-up guide lay out the order.
- Alt: Black Temple and Hyjal no longer need attunement, so an alt Priest can join as soon as it's geared. Healers are usually the easiest raid spot to fill.
Healers who want to catch up faster can find gearing services from independent sellers on the TBC Anniversary gearing page. Every other guide for this version is on the TBC Anniversary hub. Blizzard's End User License Agreement restricts account sharing and paid in-game services, and a marketplace listing isn't publisher permission.
FAQ
What is the best Priest spec in TBC Anniversary? Holy for raid healing, Shadow for raid damage and party mana, and Discipline for arena healing.
What is the Shadow Priest hit cap? 16% total against raid bosses. 5/5 Shadow Focus gives 10%, so you need 6% (76 rating) from gear.
Is Shadow Priest good in TBC raids? Yes. Vampiric Touch returns mana to your party, and Misery and Shadow Weaving raise the damage the boss takes. Most raids want at least one.
Is Priest hard to play in TBC Anniversary? Not to start. Holy's heals are simple, but good Priests pick the cheapest heal that does the job and save mana for long Black Temple fights.
What does Zul'Aman add for Priests? Brooch of Nature's Mercy for healers, and Loop of Cursed Bones, Mana Attuned Band, Footpads of Madness and Hex Shrunken Head for Shadow.
What professions should a Priest take? Enchanting and Tailoring. Warcraft Tavern calls Tailoring near-mandatory for Shadow because of the Frozen Shadoweave set.
