TBC Anniversary Rogue Guide: Phase 3.5 Builds, BiS, Rotation
TBC Anniversary rogue guide for Phase 3.5: Combat Swords build, hit and expertise caps, Zul'Aman BiS, rotation, gems, consumables and PvP.

In this guide 15 sections
Quick summary
- Play Combat in raids. Warcraft Tavern's standard raid build is Combat Swords at 20/41/0. Fists and a 16/45/0 Fists/Swords hybrid are the close alternatives; daggers trail.
- Cap hit first, then expertise. Icy Veins puts the yellow-hit cap at 64 rating with 5/5 Precision. The white-hit cap vs a raid boss is 363 rating (316 with Improved Faerie Fire, 347 as a Draenei party member, 300 with both).
- Zul'Aman changes little. Wowhead's Zul'Aman BiS list has one true upgrade, Signet of Primal Wrath from the third or fourth timed chest, plus near-equal G'eras boots and Zul'jin's Berserker's Call.
- Best races: Human (Sword and Mace Specialization, +5 expertise) for Alliance and Orc (Blood Fury) for Horde in PvE. Undead is the Horde PvP pick.
- Best professions: Leatherworking (Drums), Engineering (Sappers, goggles), Jewelcrafting or Enchanting (ring enchants) per Warcraft Tavern.
This TBC Anniversary rogue guide covers raid builds, caps, best-in-slot gear, rotation, consumables, professions and PvP for the current content: Phase 3.5, the Zul'Aman update of October 22, 2026. Wowhead and Warcraft Tavern label their Zul'Aman gear lists "Phase 4"; on Anniversary realms the Sunwell Plateau phase hasn't been dated yet, so the gear lists here stop at Black Temple, Hyjal and Zul'Aman.
Is Rogue good in TBC Anniversary?
Yes, in both raids and arena. Combat is one of the steadiest melee DPS specs in raids, and Subtlety Rogue sits in S tier on our PvP tier list, with the most EU 3v3 top-100 spots of any class.
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| High single-target damage that scales with gear all expansion | Damage leans on random procs (Sword Specialization, Combat Potency) |
| Raid utility through Improved Expose Armor | Very gear-hungry: two weapons, hit and expertise all matter |
| Stealth, Sap and Blind for control in dungeons and PvP | Little AoE beyond Blade Flurry's second target |
| Two strong arena comps (RMP, RLD) | Energy pooling makes the rotation harder for beginners |
Warcraft Tavern's Combat page lists the same trade-offs: excellent scaling and single-target damage, against RNG reliance, gear dependence and a steep start.
Know what changed for Rogues in TBC Anniversary
| Change | What it means for you |
|---|---|
| No buff or debuff limit (Warcraft Tavern) | Improved Expose Armor and your poisons never get pushed off by other raid debuffs |
| Heroism and Bloodlust hit the whole raid, and the debuff resets when a boss encounter ends (Warcraft Tavern) | Line Blade Flurry, Adrenaline Rush and Haste Potion up with it on every boss pull |
| Dual talent specialization | Keep Combat for raids and Subtlety for arena on one character |
| Phase 3.5 (October 22, 2026) | Zul'Aman timed chests and G'eras badge items; Black Temple and Hyjal attunements removed (Blizzard) |
Best Combat Rogue build for raids
All three raid builds below come from Warcraft Tavern's Combat Rogue talents page. Icy Veins lists the same families (Combat Swords, Combat Maces/Swords, Combat Fists, each with without Improved Expose Armor).
| Build | Points | Weapons | Use when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Combat Swords | 20/41/0 | Two swords (Warglaives, Vengeful Slicer, Blade of Savagery) | Default raid build; strongest per Warcraft Tavern |
| Combat Fists/Swords hybrid | 16/45/0 | Fist main hand or off hand plus a sword | You hold a strong fist weapon and a sword; drops some Lethality and Vile Poisons |
| Combat Daggers | 14/42/5 | Shard of Azzinoth plus a dagger | Only if you own top daggers; takes Opportunity 5/5 and keeps Improved Sinister Strike |
| Subtlety PvP | Deep Subtlety for Shadowstep, about 20 points in Assassination | Any | Arenas and battlegrounds |
Key talents to never skip (Warcraft Tavern):
- Precision: 5% hit. It's why your yellow cap is only 64 rating.
- Improved Slice and Dice: 45% longer Slice and Dice. Your rotation falls apart without it.
- Dual Wield Specialization, Vitality (2% Agility), Combat Potency, Surprise Attacks: core damage and energy.
- Sword, Fist or Dagger Specialization: match it to your weapons.
- Ruthlessness and Relentless Strikes: more combo points and energy.
- Murder: swap it for two points in Improved Eviscerate when the boss is a demon, per Warcraft Tavern.
- Improved Expose Armor: mandatory if your raid has no Improved Expose Armor Rogue yet. Icy Veins says it removes 3,075 armor versus Sunder Armor's 2,600, which is about 3–4% more physical damage for the whole raid.
Example: your guild has two Rogues. One plays 20/41/0 with Improved Expose Armor and keeps it up; the other drops it and puts those points into damage talents.
Choose your race
| Faction | Race | PvE value | PvP value |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alliance | Human | Best: +5 expertise with swords and maces, 10% faster reputation | Perception spots stealthers |
| Alliance | Night Elf | Second best (Warcraft Tavern) | Shadowmeld for resets and ambushes |
| Alliance | Dwarf | Stoneform for heavy physical or poison damage | Stoneform removes bleeds and poisons |
| Alliance | Gnome | Escape Artist for roots and snares | Escape Artist |
| Horde | Orc | Best: Blood Fury plus +5 expertise with axes | Hardiness stun resistance |
| Horde | Troll | Berserking, weaker than Blood Fury | Regeneration |
| Horde | Undead | Niche | Best Horde PvP pick: Will of the Forsaken |
| Horde | Blood Elf | Arcane Torrent energy | AoE silence |
Orc expertise only applies to axes. Most Zul'Aman-phase BiS weapons are swords, so a Horde Orc keeps the 64-expertise cap while a sword Human caps at 44.
Rogue hit cap, expertise cap and stat priority
Icy Veins' priority is Expertise > Hit (to cap) > Agility > Haste > Crit > Armor Penetration. Bosses dodge 6.5% of your attacks, and about 3.94 expertise rating equals one expertise, which removes 0.25% dodge.
| Cap | Rating needed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow hit (special attacks) | 64 | With 5/5 Precision; get this first |
| White hit (auto attacks), raid boss | 363 | Keep stacking hit after 64 |
| White hit with Improved Faerie Fire | 316 | Needs a Balance or Feral Druid |
| White hit with a Draenei in party | 347 | Heroic Presence |
| White hit with both | 300 | |
| Expertise, Human with swords/maces | 44 rating | 26 expertise removes the 6.5% dodge; Weapon Expertise and the racial supply the rest. Parry doesn't matter from behind |
| Expertise, everyone else | 64 rating | No racial bonus with your weapon type |
Icy Veins' tier-6 stat weights (Attack Power = 1): Expertise 2.66, Hit 2.44, Haste 2.29, Agility 2.21, Crit 1.76, Strength 1.1, Armor Penetration 0.34. Hit stays strong until the white cap because most of a Combat Rogue's damage is auto attacks.
Example: a Human with two swords and 64 hit rating should take Rigid Dawnstone or Glinting Noble Topaz gems and hit-rated items until reaching 44 expertise rating, then keep weighing hit against Agility with the weights above.
TBC Rogue BiS for Zul'Aman and Black Temple
The slot list follows Wowhead's Phase 4 Combat Swords BiS (updated October 16, 2026), which covers the Zul'Aman content. Wowhead says Zul'Aman adds only one true upgrade. The second column shows what to wear until you get it.
| Slot | BiS (source) | Good alternatives |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Cursed Vision of Sargeras (Illidan) | Slayer's Helm, Deathmantle Helm, Deathblow X11 Goggles (Engineering) |
| Neck | Choker of Endless Nightmares (Supremus) | Choker of Serrated Blades, Choker of Vile Intent |
| Shoulders | Slayer's Shoulderpads (Mother Shahraz) | Swiftstrike Shoulders (Leatherworking), Mantle of Darkness |
| Back | Shadowmoon Destroyer's Drape (Teron Gorefiend) | Cloak of Fiends (Zul'Aman first timed chest), Thalassian Wildercloak, Drape of the Dark Reavers |
| Chest | Slayer's Chestguard (Illidan) | Midnight Chestguard, Shadowtooth Trollskin Cuirass (Jan'alai) |
| Wrists | Insidious Bands (Teron Gorefiend) | Master Assassin Wristwraps (G'eras), Swiftstrike Bracers |
| Hands | Slayer's Handguards (Azgalor) | Grips of Damnation |
| Waist | Belt of One-Hundred Deaths (Lady Vashj) | Belt of Deep Shadow, Shadow-walker's Cord |
| Legs | Slayer's Legguards (Illidari Council) | Shady Dealer's Pantaloons, Skulker's Greaves |
| Feet | Shadowmaster's Boots (Shahraz) or Nyn'jah's Tabi Boots (G'eras) | Edgewalker Longboots |
| Ring 1 | Stormrage Signet Ring (Illidan) | Band of the Eternal Champion (Scale of the Sands) |
| Ring 2 | Signet of Primal Wrath (Zul'Aman third or fourth timed chest) | Ring of Deceitful Intent |
| Trinket 1 | Dragonspine Trophy (Gruul) | Never replaced in TBC, per Wowhead |
| Trinket 2 | Warp-Spring Coil (Void Reaver) or Berserker's Call (Zul'jin) | Madness of the Betrayer, Ashtongue Talisman of Lethality, Bloodlust Brooch |
| Main hand | Warglaive of Azzinoth (Illidan) | Vengeful Gladiator's Slicer, Blade of Infamy, Talon of Azshara |
| Off hand | Warglaive of Azzinoth or Blade of Savagery | Vengeful Gladiator's Quickblade, Akil'zon's Talonblade |
| Ranged | Arcanite Steam-Pistol (Al'ar) | Ancient Amani Longbow, Barrel-Blade Longrifle |
Dagger players swap to Shard of Azzinoth in the main hand. Warcraft Tavern's Assassination list pairs it with Messenger of Fate and stresses reaching about 28% hit. Wowhead says daggers aren't competitive with swords in the Zul'Aman phase.
Skip these: Wowhead flags Dory's Embrace, Trickster's Stickyfingers and Brooch of Deftness as weak, and notes Grimgrin Faceguard has no meta socket.
Our Tier 6 sets guide covers token drops, and the Zul'Aman loot guide shows which other specs compete for the Signet and Berserker's Call.
Aldor or Scryer: Wowhead rates the Aldor shoulder inscription (Greater Inscription of Vengeance) marginally better for Rogues than the Scryer one (Greater Inscription of the Blade), and Vindicator's Brand is an Aldor Exalted option. Our Aldor vs Scryers guide compares the rest.
Rogue gems, enchants and consumables
Enchants follow Warcraft Tavern's Combat Rogue guide:
| Slot | Enchant |
|---|---|
| Head | Glyph of Ferocity (Cenarion Expedition revered) |
| Shoulders | Greater Inscription of Vengeance (Aldor) or of the Blade (Scryers) |
| Back | Greater Agility |
| Chest | Exceptional Stats |
| Wrists | Assault |
| Hands | Superior Agility |
| Legs | Nethercobra Leg Armor |
| Feet | Cat's Swiftness, or Dexterity if you want pure stats |
| Weapons | Mongoose on both |
| Rings | Enchant Ring – Stats (Enchanters only) |
| Socket | Gem |
|---|---|
| Meta | Relentless Earthstorm Diamond (needs 2 red, 2 yellow and 2 blue gems) |
| Red | Delicate Living Ruby (Agility) |
| Yellow | Glinting Noble Topaz (Agility/Hit) or Rigid Dawnstone (Hit) until capped |
| Blue | Shifting Nightseye only when the socket bonus is worth it |
Epic gems: since October 22, Magtheridon's Black Sack and Brilliant Glass can contain epic gems (Blizzard). When you can get them, use the epic versions of the same colors: Delicate Crimson Spinel, Glinting Pyrestone, Rigid Lionseye and Shifting Shadowsong Amethyst.
Use our gems and enchants guide for reputation sources and recipe drops.
| Consumable | Pick |
|---|---|
| Flask | Flask of Relentless Assault |
| Elixirs (instead of a flask) | Elixir of Major Agility plus Elixir of Major Fortitude; Elixir of Demonslaying on demon bosses |
| Food | Warp Burger or Grilled Mudfish (Agility), Spicy Hot Talbuk (hit) before you reach the cap, Ravager Dog (Attack Power) |
| Potions | Haste Potion with your cooldowns; Thistle Tea for energy |
| Scrolls | Scroll of Agility V, Scroll of Strength V |
| Poisons | Instant Poison main hand, Deadly Poison off hand |
| Extra | Flame Cap, Adamantite Grenade and Super Sapper Charge (Engineers) |
The list comes from Warcraft Tavern's Combat guide. Most raids use the cheap items every pull and keep Flame Cap and Sappers for progress fights.
Poisons: Icy Veins recommends tracking your Deadly Poison stacks and using Shiv when they're about to fall off. It also warns that Envenom eats all Deadly Poison stacks, which is why Combat only uses it on targets that are about to die.
TBC Combat Rogue rotation
Icy Veins' opener and priority:
- Open with two Sinister Strikes, then Slice and Dice.
- Pop Haste Potion, Blade Flurry (single target too), Adrenaline Rush (+150 energy over its duration) and on-use trinkets together. On fights under two minutes, use everything at the pull. On longer fights, plan uses so the last one lines up with Heroism or the execute phase.
- Keep Slice and Dice up 100% of the time.
- With 2-piece tier 4: refresh Slice and Dice at 1–2 combo points and spend the rest on 5-point Ruptures.
- Without tier 4: use 2–3 point Slice and Dice and 5-point Rupture.
- Pool energy to about 65–85 before a finisher so you never overcap during Combat Potency procs.
- Use Eviscerate or Envenom only when the target is about to die and Rupture wouldn't finish.
Improved Expose Armor Rogue: keep Expose Armor at 100% uptime with 5-point refreshes, keep Slice and Dice up, and fit small Ruptures between refreshes (Icy Veins).
Weapon speed: Combat Potency gives a 20% chance per off-hand hit to gain 15 energy, so Icy Veins treats a fast 1.4–1.5 speed off hand as ideal and a slow main hand as best for Sinister Strike damage.
Cleave and trash (two targets): Warcraft Tavern's AoE notes:
- Use Blade Flurry whenever two targets stand together, and pair it with Adrenaline Rush.
- Build with Sinister Strike and keep Slice and Dice up at 3–5 combo points.
- Skip Expose Armor during Blade Flurry and spend spare combo points on Eviscerate.
Addon: a swing timer helps you fit Sinister Strike between auto attacks. Our best addons guide lists a full Phase 3 setup.
Example: in Zul'Aman's Nalorakk fight, a 2-piece T4 Rogue opens Sinister Strike x2, 1-point Slice and Dice, then pops Blade Flurry, Adrenaline Rush and Haste Potion at the first Heroism, pools to about 80 energy, and refreshes 5-point Rupture.
Best professions for Rogue
| Profession | Rogue perk | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Leatherworking | Drums of Battle for the party, Swiftstrike gear | Best (Warcraft Tavern) |
| Engineering | Deathblow X11 Goggles, Adamantite Grenades, Super Sapper Charge, Rocket Boots | Best |
| Jewelcrafting | Profession-only gems and a jewelcrafter neck | Strong |
| Enchanting | Two stat ring enchants (+8 all stats total) | Strong |
| Blacksmithing | Dragonmaw and Dragonstrike maces | Early phases only; Warcraft Tavern says drop it by Phase 3 |
| Alchemy, gathering, Tailoring | Gold or nothing exclusive | Weak for raid DPS |
Our best professions guide compares every class.
Subtlety Rogue PvP build and arena
- Build: deep Subtlety for Shadowstep, with about 20 points in Assassination. Warcraft Tavern calls the Shadowstep build "top tier" and the most popular. Keep Combat in your second talent slot for raids.
- Season 3 standing: Subtlety is about three quarters of all 3v3 Rogues and averages above the ladder in both regions (Pvplog, October 27).
- Comps: RMP (Rogue, Mage, Disc Priest) in 3v3, and Rogue with a Disc Priest or Resto Druid in 2v2. Our PvP comps and builds guide lists every partner.
- Gear: the Vengeful Gladiator set and weapons for Arena Season 3, which started September 1, 2026. Season 1 pieces are on the Honor vendors for a quick start.
- Races: Undead (Will of the Forsaken) for Horde; Human (Perception) or Gnome (Escape Artist) for Alliance.
Rogue leveling tips 1-70
Use our 1–70 leveling guide for routes.
- Stealth past packs to reach quest objectives instead of clearing them.
- Kite elites with Gouge: Gouge, step back, use your ranged weapon, Gouge again when it recovers, and Kidney Shot at 5 combo points.
- Apply Rupture at about 10–15% health and move to the next mob while poisons finish it.
- Put Crippling Poison on one weapon while leveling to reduce incoming damage.
- Bind Distract to a cursor macro:
/use [@cursor] Distract.
Avoid these mistakes
- Stopping hit at 64. That's only the yellow cap; auto attacks still miss.
- Mixing swords with a mace main hand as a Human and losing track of which expertise cap applies.
- Letting Slice and Dice drop while pooling energy.
- Running two Improved Expose Armor Rogues, or none.
- Wearing an old Phase 3 list and skipping the cheap G'eras boots and wrists.
Return, boost, or gear an alt
- Returning player: respec with Dual Spec, check your hit and expertise against the table above, then buy G'eras badge items with banked Badges of Justice.
- Fresh or boosted 70: heroics and Karazhan first, then Zul'Aman. Our fresh 70 catch-up guide gives the order, and the Karazhan guide covers the first raid.
- Alt Rogue: Black Temple and Hyjal no longer need attunement, so an alt can join them as soon as its gear allows.
If you'd rather have help with Zul'Aman or Black Temple, independent sellers list carries on the TBC Anniversary raids page; class guides and other services are on the TBC Anniversary hub. Blizzard's End User License Agreement restricts account sharing and paid in-game services, and a listing there isn't publisher permission.
FAQ
What is the best Rogue spec in TBC Anniversary? Combat for raids and dungeons. Warcraft Tavern's 20/41/0 Combat Swords build is the standard; Subtlety is the PvP spec.
What is the Rogue hit cap in TBC? 64 hit rating for special attacks with 5/5 Precision, and 363 rating for auto attacks against a raid boss (Icy Veins). Improved Faerie Fire and a Draenei in party lower the white cap to 300. The expertise cap is 44 rating for a Human with swords or maces and 64 for everyone else.
Does Zul'Aman change Rogue BiS? Barely. Wowhead's list adds Signet of Primal Wrath as the only true upgrade, with Nyn'jah's Tabi Boots and Berserker's Call close to the Black Temple items.
Swords or daggers for Rogue in TBC? Swords. Wowhead says daggers aren't competitive in the Zul'Aman phase, and Warcraft Tavern rates Sword Specialization above the others.
Is Rogue hard to play in TBC Anniversary? The Combat rotation is simple to learn but hard to master, because energy pooling and Slice and Dice timing decide your damage. Subtlety in arena is one of the hardest specs to play well.
What is the best Rogue race? Human for Alliance and Orc for Horde in PvE. Undead for Horde PvP.
