TBC Anniversary Paladin Guide: Phase 3.5 Holy, Prot, Ret and BiS

This TBC Anniversary paladin guide is current for Phase 3.5, the Zul'Aman update that went live on October 22, 2026. Black Temple, Mount Hyjal and Zul'Aman are open, and Blizzard's update notes removed the Black Temple and Hyjal attunements. Warcraft Tavern and Wowhead call this content "Phase 4", so their "Phase 4" gear lists are the ones used below. Sunwell Plateau, Blizzard's Phase 4, has no release date yet.

• Protection: Avenger's Shield, Spiritual Attunement (mana when healed), Holy Shield changes, and Consecration as a baseline spell.
• Retribution: Crusader Strike, Seal of Blood (Horde) or Seal of the Martyr (Alliance), Improved Seal of the Crusader (+3% crit for attackers), Improved Sanctity Aura (+2% damage).
• Holy: Divine Illumination (50% mana cost), longer Blessings (10 minutes, Greater 30 minutes), and Illumination now returns 60% of mana on crit.

Example: in a raid with one Ret Paladin, the Holy Paladin takes 45/11/5. In a raid without a Ret Paladin, one Holy Paladin switches to 42/11/8 so attackers still get the 3% crit debuff.

Play each spec

Retribution: twist your seals

Warcraft Tavern calls this "one of the most difficult rotations in all of the expansion." It writes Seal of Blood, so Alliance should read Seal of the Martyr.

1. Cast Crusader Strike on cooldown, but only at the start of a swing.
2. If Crusader Strike is on cooldown at the start of a swing, cast Exorcism or Consecration.
3. Cast rank 1 Seal of Command.
4. Cast Seal of Blood in the last 0.4 seconds of the swing, so the hit procs both seals.
5. Judge if you're in Seal of Blood and about to twist.
6. Repeat.

You can normally do a 1/2 rotation: one Crusader Strike swing, then one twist swing. With Bloodlust or a Dragonspine Trophy proc, do 2/3. You can only twist out of Seal of Command (Warcraft Tavern).

Protection

Single target:

1. Holy Shield on cooldown.
2. Consecration on cooldown.
3. Judge your Judgement Seal.
4. Keep Seal of Righteousness up between Judgements.
5. Exorcism on Demons and Undead.
6. Cast Greater Blessing of Kings on a friendly target to fill the gaps.

AoE: pull with Avenger's Shield, then Consecration on cooldown. Holy Shield keeps the mana coming back through Spiritual Attunement as the pack hits you, which is why Protection Paladins are the strongest trash tanks in Black Temple, Hyjal and Zul'Aman.

Holy

Before the pull: Aura and Blessings up, then a downranked Holy Light to proc Light's Grace.

Heal priority:

1. Holy Shock if someone will die before a cast finishes. Its range is only 20 yards.
2. Holy Light for heavy damage.
3. Downranked Holy Light to keep Light's Grace up.
4. Flash of Light for light damage.
5. Keep your Judgement debuff on the boss.

Level a Paladin

Retribution is the usual leveling spec, because Seal of Command and the Retribution talents give the most damage while questing. Protection can also level by AoE-tanking dungeon groups once it has Consecration, Holy Shield and Avenger's Shield. Use Dual Spec at 70 to keep Holy or Protection for groups and Retribution for solo play. Our leveling guide 1-70 has the routes for both factions.

Avoid these mistakes

• Tanking raid bosses below 490 Defense.
• Twisting out of any seal other than Seal of Command.
• Casting Holy Shock from beyond 20 yards.
• Two Holy Paladins both skipping Improved Seal of the Crusader when there's no Ret Paladin.

Return, boost, or gear an alt

• Returning: check your caps, then target Zul'Aman's Brooch, Cloak of Fiends or Berserker's Call. Badges now drop from every boss in Karazhan, Gruul, Magtheridon, Serpentshrine, Tempest Keep and Zul'Aman (Blizzard).
