WoW Forever Shaman Guide: Talents, Builds, Totems, Best Race
WoW Forever Shaman guide: every totem change, talent builds for Elemental, Enhancement and Resto, rotations, stats and the best race after the Oct 26 pass.

In this guide 15 sections
WoW Forever keeps the Shaman's Classic identity: totems, shocks, weapon imbues and a heal for every situation. It removes most of the busywork. Totems last longer and drop four at a time, imbues last an hour, and each tree gets a signature spell: Lava Burst, Maelstrom Weapon and Riptide. This WoW Forever Shaman guide covers every baseline change, the full talent layout from the October 15 beta build, a start build and rotation for each spec, stats, and the best race after Blizzard's October 26 racial pass.
The talent data comes from the beta client (WoW Handbook, build 1.60.1.70425) and Blizzard's WoW Forever beta development notes. The game launches on November 4, 2026, so check your talent tooltips on day one for last-minute tuning.
Quick summary
- Totems are much less work. Buff totems last 5 minutes (up from 2) and use a 1-second global cooldown. Call of the Elements, Ancestors and Spirits each drop up to four totems at once (WoW Handbook).
- Several group totems now cover the whole raid. In the October 15 build, Grace of Air, Strength of Earth, Windfury and Flametongue Totem became raid-wide, and Grace of Air now stacks with Windfury and Flametongue Totem (Kaivax).
- Elemental Mastery is back. It returned as the 31-point Elemental talent on October 15. Lava Burst moved to 21 points and Earthbound to 16 (Kaivax).
- Enhancement is the best Shaman leveling spec; Restoration is the group pick. Elemental needs gear and its 21-point Lava Burst to feel smooth.
- The Alliance gets Shamans through the Dwarf. The Horde has Orc, Tauren, Troll and Skyborne (WoW Handbook). Dwarves lost Earth Fury and gained +1% hit (Artisan's Precision) on October 26 (Kaivax).
WoW Forever Shaman changes for every spec
These changes apply to all three specs, with no talent needed. Across the three trees, 17 of the Shaman's 50 talents are new and 23 more changed (WoW Handbook):
| Change | Classic | Forever |
|---|---|---|
| Totem global cooldown | Standard global cooldown | 1 sec |
| Buff totem duration | 2 min | 5 min |
| Resistance totems | Party | Whole raid |
| Weapon imbue duration | 5 min | 60 min, and they stack with Sharpening Stones, Weightstones and Wizard Oil |
| Fire Nova | A totem | A spell from level 12 that bursts around your active Fire totem (10-sec cooldown) |
| Windfury and Flametongue Totem | Weapon enchants | Party buffs. Raid-wide since October 15 (Kaivax) |
| Tranquil Air Totem | In the game | Removed |
| Multi-totem drop | None | Call of the Elements (20), Ancestors (30), Spirits (40): up to 4 totems each |
| Totemic Recall | None | Clears all totems and refunds a quarter of their Mana |
| Totemic Projection | None | Level 22: moves active totems up to 30 yards, 1-min cooldown |
| Lightning Bolt from rank 4 | 3-sec cast | 2.5-sec cast, with less spell power scaling |
| Chain Lightning | 2.5-sec cast | 2-sec cast |
| Two-Handed Axes and Maces, Shield Specialization, Weapon Mastery, Enhancing Totems, Improved Weapon Totems | Talents | Baseline |
A totem tracker shows which totems are active and how long they have left. Right-click one there to dismiss it. WoW Handbook counts 5 new trainable spells among the Shaman's 48: Fire Nova, the three Calls and Totemic Projection.
Know which totems stack
| Pair | Stacks? | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Windfury Totem + Flametongue Totem | No | Kaivax, Sept 24, confirmed Oct 15 |
| Grace of Air + Windfury Totem | Yes, since Oct 15 | Kaivax, Oct 15 |
| Grace of Air + Flametongue Totem | Yes, since Oct 15 | Kaivax, Oct 15 |
| Windfury Totem + Windfury Weapon on your main hand | No personal benefit from the totem | WoW Handbook tooltip |
| Flametongue Totem + Flametongue Weapon on your main hand | No personal benefit from the totem | WoW Handbook tooltip |
| Windfury, Grace of Air or Tranquil Air from two different Shamans | No (Grace of Air excepted since Oct 15) | Kaivax, Sept 24: "even if used by different Shamans" |
Our take: with two Shamans in a group, don't double up. One drops Windfury for the melee, and the other uses the Air slot for Grace of Air, which now stacks with it. Windfury and Flametongue Totem also only affect players since October 15, not pets (Kaivax).
Plan your baseline spells by level
| Level | Spell | What it does (beta tooltip, rank shown) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Lightning Bolt, Rockbiter Weapon, Healing Wave | Core kit. Rockbiter now raises attack power and adds threat |
| 10 | Flametongue Weapon, Flame Shock, Searing Totem, Strength of Earth | Fire imbue and first DoT |
| 12 | Fire Nova | 232 Fire damage within 10 yards of your Fire totem (rank 5) |
| 20 | Call of the Elements, Frost Shock, Ghost Wolf, Lesser Healing Wave, Healing Stream | First multi-totem drop |
| 22 | Totemic Projection | Moves your totems |
| 30 | Call of the Ancestors, Windfury Weapon, Reincarnation, Astral Recall, Grounding | Second totem set |
| 32 | Chain Lightning, Windfury Totem | Chain Lightning has a 6-sec cooldown |
| 40 | Call of the Spirits, Chain Heal | Third totem set and group heal |
| 42 | Grace of Air Totem | Agility for the party or raid |
Best Shaman spec in WoW Forever
| Spec | Role | Signature talents | Our leveling take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elemental | Ranged damage | Lightning Overload, Lava Burst (21), Elemental Mastery (31) | Strong in dungeons, more Mana downtime solo |
| Enhancement | Melee damage | Stormstrike (16), Maelstrom Weapon, Rage of the Farseer (31) | Best solo leveler |
| Restoration | Healer | Water Shield, Mana Tide Totem (16), Riptide (31) | Slow solo, excellent in groups |
WoW Handbook recommends Enhancement for leveling ("spend your talents with the Enhancement Beta Start build"). Our class tier list ranks Restoration Shaman among the top healers for dungeons and raids.
Shaman strengths and weaknesses
| Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|
| Three roles: ranged, melee or healer | No tank spec |
| Totems now buff the whole raid | More buttons than most classes, even with the three Calls |
| Earth Shock interrupt and Purge in every spec | The shocks share one cooldown |
| Reincarnation self-resurrection | Mana runs out fast on Elemental while leveling |
| Healing Wave and Lesser Healing Wave between pulls | No Dual Wield: Enhancement uses a two-hander or a one-hander and shield |
The shared toolkit is the point: an Enhancement Shaman still heals, and a Restoration Shaman still interrupts and drops the same totems.
Build an Elemental Shaman
Know the Elemental tree
| Row (points) | Talents | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 (0) | Convection, Concussion | Concussion: +5% Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning, Earth Shock |
| 2 (5) | Elemental Devastation, Reverberation, Elemental Alacrity (new), Call of Flame | Alacrity: −0.5 sec on Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst |
| 3 (10) | Elemental Focus, Elemental Warding (moved in) | Focus: 10% chance of a free spell |
| 4 (15) | Trial by Fire (new), Eye of the Storm, Earthbound (new, 16-point) | Earthbound: Earthbind Totem roots for 5 sec |
| 5 (20) | Elemental Reach (new), Lava Burst (new, 21-point), Lightning Overload (new) | Overload: 10% chance of a free half-damage copy |
| 6 (25) | Elemental Fury | +100% crit damage. Needs Lightning Overload since Oct 15 |
| 7 (30) | Elemental Mastery (31-point) | −0.5 sec Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst, no Chain Lightning cooldown, 15 sec, 3-min cooldown |
Lava Burst deals 113 Fire damage at rank 1, and 20% more on a target with your Flame Shock (WoW Handbook). It gained a fourth rank on October 15 (Kaivax). Call of Flame adds 15% to Fire totems, Flame Shock, Fire Nova and Lava Burst, and extends Flame Shock by up to 9 seconds.
Follow the Elemental beta start (levels 10–20)
| Levels | Talent | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 10–14 | Concussion 5/5 | +5% on your three main spells |
| 15–17 | Call of Flame 3/3 | Fire totems and Flame Shock are most of your damage early |
| 18–19 | Elemental Alacrity 2/3 | Faster casts |
| 20 | Elemental Focus 1/1 | Free casts, because Mana is the limit |
Elemental priority (consistent with tooltips): keep Flame Shock up, cast Lava Burst on it, use Chain Lightning on packs, and fill with Lightning Bolt. Save Earth Shock for interrupts.
Build an Enhancement Shaman
Know the Enhancement tree
| Row (points) | Talents | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Earth's Grasp (moved in), Thundering Strikes, Ancestral Knowledge | Thundering Strikes: +5% crit on everything |
| 2 | Guardian Totems, Mental Dexterity (new), Improved Ghost Wolf, Improved Lightning Shield | Mental Dexterity: attack power equal to 100% of Intellect |
| 3 | Elemental Weapons (moved in), Shamanistic Focus (new), Anticipation | Focus: −45% Mana on shocks and Lightning Shield |
| 4 | Toughness, Flurry, Stormstrike (16-point) | Stormstrike: +20% to your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock |
| 5 | Spirit Weapons (new), Mental Quickness (new), Improved Stormstrike (new) | Spirit Weapons: parry, −30% threat (or +30% with Rockbiter) |
| 6 | Maelstrom Weapon (new) | Melee hits cut Lightning Bolt's cast time and cost by 20% per stack, up to 5 |
| 7 | Rage of the Farseer (new, 31-point) | +30% attack speed for 25 sec |
Our math: five Maelstrom Weapon stacks × 20% = a Lightning Bolt with no cast time and no Mana cost, if the stacks add up in a straight line. WoW Handbook doesn't confirm how the stacks combine, so test it at a training dummy.
Spirit Weapons with Rockbiter Weapon raises threat by 30%, and Rockbiter itself adds threat.
Follow the Enhancement beta start (levels 10–20)
| Levels | Talent | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 10–14 | Thundering Strikes 5/5 | +5% crit |
| 15–17 | Mental Dexterity 3/3 | Makes caster mail worth wearing |
| 18–19 | Improved Ghost Wolf 2/2 | −3 sec cast, usable indoors |
| 20 | Shamanistic Focus 1/1 | Shocks stop draining your Mana |
Use Rage of the Farseer in burst windows.
Enhancement rotation
- Keep Windfury Weapon and Lightning Shield up.
- Stormstrike on cooldown. Its 20% bonus applies to your next Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning or Earth Shock.
- At five Maelstrom Weapon stacks, cast Lightning Bolt right after Stormstrike.
- Earth Shock to interrupt, or Flame Shock on targets that live long enough.
- Rage of the Farseer for 25 seconds of faster attacks on a boss or a big pull.
This priority is built from the beta tooltips, not from logs at level 60.
Build a Restoration Shaman
Know the Restoration tree
| Row (points) | Talents | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Improved Healing Wave, Tidal Focus | Tidal Focus moved here Oct 15 and adds 5% hit |
| 2 | Mindfulness (new), Natural Grace (new), Totemic Focus, Improved Reincarnation | Mindfulness: 50% Mana regen while casting |
| 3 | Ancestral Healing (moved in), Healing Focus, Water Shield (new) | Water Shield: 2% max Mana per hit taken or spell crit |
| 4 | Tidal Mastery, Restorative Totems, Mana Tide Totem (16-point) | Mana Tide: ranks at 25, 38, 48, 58 |
| 5 | Healing Way, Nature's Swiftness | Healing Way: +25% Healing Wave |
| 6 | Purification | +10% healing |
| 7 | Riptide (new, 31-point) | Heals 484 plus 445 over 15 sec, and +25% Chain Heal on that target |
Follow the Restoration beta start (levels 10–20)
| Levels | Talent | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 10–14 | Improved Healing Wave 5/5 | −0.5 sec on your main heal |
| 15–17 | Mindfulness 3/3 | Keeps half your regen while casting |
| 18–19 | Natural Grace 2/3 | Less threat. Flexible points |
| 20 | Water Shield 1/1 | Mana back when you're hit or crit |
Restoration healing priority
- Riptide the tank first. It heals over 15 seconds and raises your next Chain Heal on that target by 25%.
- Chain Heal for group damage, starting on the Riptide target.
- Healing Wave for big single-target heals, with Improved Healing Wave cutting its cast. Lesser Healing Wave when you need it fast.
- Water Shield stays up all fight. With Mindfulness, you keep half your Mana regeneration while casting.
- Mana Tide Totem and Nature's Swiftness are your emergency buttons.
The new 2% Mana return from Water Shield triggers on any heal crit since October 15 (Kaivax), so crit is a Mana stat for Restoration.
Track the Shaman patch history
| Build | Change | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Sept 24 | Lightning Bolt ranks 3–4 damage raised; Flametongue Totem loses its duration and stops stacking with the weapon or Windfury Totem | Kaivax |
| Sept 24 | Lava Burst ranks 1–2 about 10% above the matching Lightning Bolt; Rage of the Farseer loses its casting-speed bonus; Riptide can crit | Kaivax |
| Oct 1 | Totemic Recall now restores Mana; Disease Cleansing Totem lasts 5 min | Kaivax |
| Oct 8 | Lightning Bolt ranks 1–5 smoothed; Elemental Focus no longer wasted by Fire Nova; quest drops for "Storm, Earth, and Fire" improved | Kaivax |
| Oct 15 | Grace of Air stacks with Windfury and Flametongue; four buff totems raid-wide | Kaivax |
| Oct 15 | Chain Lightning Mana cost cut about 35%; Fire Nova coefficient 0.214 → 0.143, with lower base damage and cost | Kaivax |
| Oct 15 | Elemental Mastery returns at 31; Lava Burst to 21 with a 4th rank; Earthbound to 16; Call of Thunder removed | Kaivax |
| Oct 15 | Stormstrike costs 8% of base Mana; Mana Tide gains a level 38 rank; Water Shield triggers on any crit | Kaivax |
Trend: Blizzard is cutting Fire Nova spam and Chain Lightning's Mana cost at the same time. The intent seems to be single-target and cleave damage over totem-centered AoE (our reading).
Best Shaman race in WoW Forever
Blizzard made a final racial pass on October 26 and 27, after the beta closed (Kaivax, development notes). The table reflects it.
| Race | Faction | Key racials | October 26–27 changes | Our pick for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dwarf (new) | Alliance | Stoneform, Find Treasure, Big Game Hunter | Earth Fury removed; Artisan's Precision added (+1% hit with spells and attacks) | Any spec. Stoneform for dungeons and PvP |
| Orc | Horde | Blood Fury, Shatter Curse, Hardiness | Savage (+1% crit) removed; Blood Fury back to a 2-minute cooldown | Enhancement |
| Tauren | Horde | War Stomp, Endurance, Cultivation | Endurance is now only +5% Health; Plainsrunning stacks to 60% but not on mounts | Leveling, PvP |
| Troll | Horde | Berserking, Rapid Regeneration, Beast Slaying | Berserking lasts 15 seconds (was 10) | Elemental, Restoration |
| Skyborne (new) | Horde | Walk on Air, Read Leyline, Skysight | Read Leyline now +50% regeneration for 15 seconds, or +100% while Attuned from a Ley Line | Utility, any spec |
Racial lists come from WoW Handbook; the changes column comes from Blizzard's notes.
Dwarves are the Alliance's only Shaman option, and the Skyborne Shaman is Horde-only. After October 26, Troll's longer Berserking is the biggest racial gain for a caster Shaman, while the Dwarf's flat +1% hit helps every spec early in gearing. Our race and class combos guide covers the Dwarf Shaman pairing. Skyborne Shamans start on Zephras Isle; see the Skyborne race guide and the Zephras Isle guide.
Compare the leveling methods
| Method | Spec | Downtime | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo questing | Enhancement | Low | Melee costs no Mana, so heal between fights |
| Solo questing | Elemental | High | Improves with gear and Lava Burst at 21 points |
| Dungeon groups | Restoration | Low | Healers find groups quickly |
| Dungeon groups | Elemental | Medium | Chain Lightning's Mana cut helps |
Do your class totem quests: Kaivax's October 8 notes made the "Storm, Earth, and Fire" totems drop more often and the Eye of the Tempest for "Heed My Call" multi-drop. Keep Lightning Shield and a weapon imbue up, use Ghost Wolf for travel, and save the three Calls for elites and dungeon pulls. Our WoW Forever leveling guide covers routes and rested XP, and the new dungeons guide lists group content by level, starting with the level 15–20 Ruins of Lordaeron.
Gear your Shaman
A Shaman wears leather until level 40 and mail after it. WoW Handbook lists 52 class sets: 13 new and 3 rebuilt. The three new Spiritcaller sets each reward one spec: The Spiritcaller (Restoration, Riptide −1 sec at 5 pieces), Spiritcaller's Rage (Enhancement, Stormstrike −0.5 sec) and Spiritcaller's Storm (Elemental, Lava Burst −1 sec). The Earthfury tier comes in four variants (Eruption, Impact, Relief, Resolve), and this build doesn't describe their bonuses. Our raids guide covers where the sets drop.
Shaman stats
Spell and melee hit are one stat in Forever, and so is crit (WoW Handbook). That makes hybrid gear more useful than it was in Classic. Blizzard hasn't published stat weights, so use the talents to read what each spec wants:
| Spec | What to look for | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental | Spell power, then hit, then crit and Intellect | Elemental Fury doubles crit damage; hit stops wasted Lava Bursts |
| Enhancement | Weapon damage first, then Strength, Agility and Intellect | Mental Dexterity turns 100% of Intellect into attack power |
| Restoration | Healing power, Intellect and crit | Water Shield returns Mana on heal crits; Mindfulness keeps half your regen while casting |
Professions: Leatherworking and Skinning suit the leather years (1–39), and Alchemy covers Mana potions for a class that drinks a lot. Our professions guide covers the new recipes and pairs.
Advice for alts and returning players
| If you played... | What to relearn |
|---|---|
| Classic Shaman | No more 2-minute totem refreshes. Bind the three Calls and Totemic Recall |
| Classic Elemental | Elemental Mastery is no longer the PvP burst button you remember: it now speeds casts for 15 sec |
| Classic Enhancement | Stormstrike is a 16-point talent on an 8-sec cooldown. Two-handers need no talent |
| Classic Restoration | Water Shield and Riptide change your Mana plan. Mana Tide has four ranks |
| An Alliance-only player | Roll a Dwarf. It's the only Alliance Shaman |
For an alt, Enhancement levels fastest with the least gear. If you main a healer elsewhere, Restoration Shaman is the easiest second healer to find groups with. Compare it with our Paladin guide and Warrior guide for the other two reworked hybrid and melee classes. Our PvP guide covers Shaman roles in battlegrounds. The WoW Forever hub collects the rest of our class coverage.

FAQ
Is Shaman good in WoW Forever?
Yes. It can fill ranged damage, melee damage or healing roles, and several of its buff totems now cover the whole raid (Kaivax, October 15). Restoration ranks among the top healers in our tier list.
What is the best Shaman spec for leveling in WoW Forever?
Enhancement. Melee costs no Mana, so you can save it for healing between pulls, and Maelstrom Weapon turns stacks into instant Lightning Bolts.
Can the Alliance play Shaman in WoW Forever?
Yes, as a Dwarf. It's the only Alliance Shaman race, while the Skyborne Shaman is Horde-only (WoW Handbook).
What is the best race for Shaman in WoW Forever?
Orc for Enhancement and Troll for Elemental or Restoration on the Horde; Dwarf is the only Alliance choice. Blizzard's October 26 pass gave Troll a 15-second Berserking and Orc a 2-minute Blood Fury, and swapped the Dwarf's Earth Fury for +1% hit.
Is Elemental Mastery in WoW Forever?
Yes. It was removed early in the beta and came back as the 31-point Elemental talent on October 15. It now cuts 0.5 seconds from Lightning Bolt and Lava Burst and removes Chain Lightning's cooldown for 15 seconds, on a 3-minute cooldown (Kaivax).
Can Enhancement Shamans dual wield in WoW Forever?
No. WoW Handbook's spell and talent lists include no Dual Wield, which matches Classic. Two-Handed Axes and Maces are now baseline instead.
