WoW Forever Paladin Guide: Talents, Builds, Tanking, Best Race
WoW Forever Paladin guide: Holy Strike, the Seal of Fury taunt, talent builds for Holy, Protection and Ret, rotations, stats, gear and the best race.

In this guide 13 sections
WoW Forever keeps the Paladin's Seals and Judgements but fixes its oldest gaps. Protection gets a taunt, Retribution gets a talent that does seal twisting for you, Holy gets group healing tools, and the Horde gets the class through the Undead. This WoW Forever Paladin guide covers every baseline change, the talent trees, a starter build and rotation for each spec, stats, gear and the best race after Blizzard's October 26 racial pass.
The design intent comes from Blizzard's Paladin class deep dive (October 15). Tooltip numbers come from the final beta client as read by WoW Handbook (updated October 24), and tuning from Blizzard's development notes. The game launches on November 4, 2026.
Quick summary
- Every Paladin gets Holy Strike at level 6. It's an instant weapon strike with Holy damage on a 10-second cooldown. Judgement no longer consumes your Seal (WoW Handbook; Kaivax).
- Protection finally has a taunt. Seal of Fury, learned at 10, makes Judgement taunt for 4 seconds. Swift Judgement resets a missed one, and Templar's Bulwark absorbs damage equal to 100% of your maximum health (WoW Handbook, datamined).
- 19 of the Paladin's 50 talents are new, and 23 more changed (WoW Handbook). The 16-point row now holds Swift Judgement for Protection and Sacred Arbiter for Retribution.
- Undead can be Paladins, which brings the class to the Horde, with its own Bandarion Keep storyline (Blizzard).
- Holy Shock moved to 21 points with a 10-second cooldown, so Holy and hybrid "Shockadin" builds reach it earlier (Blizzard).
- The class keeps its gaps: no interrupt and no slow (Blizzard). Blizzard changed Paladin numbers in all four beta builds, so check tooltips at launch.
Learn what changed for every Paladin
These are baseline changes every Paladin gets, whatever their spec. Source: WoW Handbook, What Forever Changes and New and Reworked Abilities.
| Level | Ability | Status | What it does |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 | Holy Strike | New | Instant strike, 50% weapon damage plus 81 Holy damage at rank 1 |
| 10 | Seal of Fury | New | +35 Holy damage per swing. With a shield, each hit also adds an absorb worth 50% of that Holy damage. Judging it deals 153 Holy damage and taunts for 4 seconds |
| 20 | Consecration | Was a Holy talent | 96 Holy damage over 8 seconds, plus 216 more to the first 4 enemies |
| 20 | Blessing of Kings | Was a Protection talent | +10% total stats for 1 hour |
| 26 | Salvation and Revoke | New | Salvation cuts a party member's threat by 30% for 1 hour; Revoke removes it |
| 40 | Hammer of the Righteous | New | Hits the target and up to 3 nearby enemies for 3 × main-hand DPS; shares a cooldown with Crusader Strike |
| 60 | Mass Salvation | New | Salvation for every raid member of the target's class |
| – | Lay on Hands | Changed | Cooldown 20 minutes (was 1 hour) |
| – | Fire, Frost and Shadow Resistance Aura | Changed | Now cover every raid member within 30 yards |
Two more baseline rules matter all the time. Judgement no longer consumes your Seal, so you don't recast it after every Judgement. Blessings last 1 hour. Blizzard replaced Blessing of Salvation with Salvation and Mass Salvation in the October 15 build, and they're "not exclusive with blessings" (Kaivax). That means a Salvation no longer takes a Blessing slot. Talents start at level 10 and use gold-medal talents at 11, 16, 21 and 31 points; dual specialization opens at level 40, and you change talents at a class trainer (Blizzard; see our dual spec guide).
Best Paladin spec in WoW Forever
| Spec | Role | 16-point milestone | 31-point talent | Our assessment |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Holy | Healer | Infusion of Light, Illumination or Divine Favor (row 4) | Light's Vigil | Strong single-target healer, but group healing takes setup |
| Protection | Tank | Swift Judgement | Holy Shield (block +30% for 10 sec); Templar's Bulwark sits in row 5 | Top-tier dungeon tank |
| Retribution | Melee damage | Sacred Arbiter | Twist of Light | Fast solo leveling; raid damage unproven |
Source for the talent placements: WoW Handbook. Tier reasoning is in our class tier list.
Strengths: Blizzard calls Forever Paladins "highly effective tanks, competitive damage dealers, and the strongest single-target healers in the game." They are strong against Undead and Demons, bring Blessings and raid-wide resistance auras, and have Divine Shield and Lay on Hands to survive. Weaknesses: no interrupt, no slow, limited range, and group healing that takes setup (Blizzard).
New talents in each tree
| Tree | New | Moved in | Removed (now baseline or gone) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Holy (8 new) | Improved Seals, Voice of Truth, Reverence, Purifying Power, Infusion of Light, Divine Precision, Consecrated Ground, Light's Vigil | Divine Favor | Consecration (trainer), Improved Blessing of Wisdom, Improved Lay on Hands, Improved Seal of Righteousness, Lasting Judgement |
| Protection (5 new) | Improved Seal of Fury, Sacred Duty, Swift Judgement, Templar's Bulwark, Iron Creed | Toughness, Improved Hammer of Justice | Blessing of Kings (trainer), Blessing of Sanctuary, Improved Concentration Aura, Improved Devotion Aura |
| Retribution (6 new) | Holy Conduit, Sanctified Judgement, Sacred Arbiter, Champion of the Light, Instrument of Law, Twist of Light | Deflection, Repentance | Improved Blessing of Might, Improved Retribution Aura, Improved Seal of the Crusader, Sanctity Aura |
Paladin starter builds to level 20
WoW Handbook publishes point orders from level 10 to 20 for each spec (the beta capped at 30, so nobody has a tested level 60 build yet).
| Spec | Levels 10–14 | 15–16/17 | 17/18–19 | Level 20 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Retribution (0/0/11) | Deflection 5/5 (+5% parry) | Improved Judgement 2/2 (−2 sec) | Conviction 3/5 (+3% crit) | Seal of Command |
| Protection (0/11/0) | Redoubt 5/5 | Precision 3/3 (+3% hit) | Anticipation 2/5 (+8 Defense) | Shield Specialization 1/3 |
| Holy (11/0/0) | Divine Intellect 5/5 (+10% Intellect) | Improved Seals 3/3 (+15% Seal and Judgement damage) | Healing Light 2/3 (+8%) | Reverence 1/3 (10% regen while casting) |
WoW Handbook's swaps: grouping Ret Paladins can move Deflection into Benediction for 10% cheaper instant spells and seals. Against Undead or Demons, two Conviction points go into Holy Conduit. Holy players who mostly group can move Improved Seals into Healing Light and Spiritual Focus. For solo questing, WoW Handbook says "Retribution kills far faster" than Protection.
Tank with Seal of Fury
This is the spec Forever changed most. Every number below is WoW Handbook's datamined tooltip unless noted.
| Tool | What it does | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Seal of Fury + Judgement | 4-second taunt | Your first real taunt |
| Swift Judgement (16 points) | Resets Judgement | "A missed taunt is not the end of the pull" |
| Templar's Bulwark | Absorb equal to 100% of max health for 8 sec; applies Forbearance for 1 min | Emergency button; can't stack with Divine Shield's Forbearance |
| Iron Creed | +25% Holy Strike threat; with Righteous Fury, Holy Strike cuts damage taken by 10% for 6 sec | Holy Strike becomes mitigation |
| Improved Seal of Fury | When the Seal's shield is used up, restore 60 Mana, more against higher-level enemies | Mana while tanking |
| Consecration | Strongest on the first 4 enemies | Big AoE pulls are deliberately limited |
Blizzard adds two details that shape how you tank. Seal of Fury's bonus Holy damage is the same on every swing, so a fast one-handed weapon makes more absorb shields. And because the taunt comes through Judgement, it reaches 10 yards, against 5 yards for a Warrior's Taunt or a Druid's Growl.
Protection priority (our assessment): turn on Righteous Fury, keep Seal of Fury active, Judge the main target, drop Consecration, and use Holy Strike on cooldown (with Iron Creed, time it before big hits). Keep Judgement ready for a loose mob and Swift Judgement for a resisted taunt. Consecration only holds the first 4 enemies well, so mark a fifth for crowd control. Tanks get groups fastest; compare the Warrior guide if you're choosing a tank. The dungeon list is in our new dungeons guide.
Heal as Holy, or level as Retribution
Holy: Holy Shock is now the 21-point talent with a 10-second cooldown (was 30), and Holy Power adds 15% crit to Holy Shock and Holy Strike. Divine Precision gives up to 18% hit with Holy spells, because Blizzard won't put hit on plate healing gear (Blizzard). Infusion of Light makes Holy Shock and Flash of Light crits cut 1.0 second off your next Holy Light. Light's Vigil sets up a free Holy Shock that heals the target's whole party for 325, and only one can be active per party. Illumination returns 50% of a spell's base cost on a crit, down from 100% in Classic. Voice of Truth grants 6 seconds of immunity to Silence and Interrupt (all WoW Handbook). Blizzard removed Improved Holy Strike and made its 10-second cooldown baseline. Kaivax explained that a cooldown talent "so early on in a healing talent tree made this feel like a talent that was required." Holy healing priority (our assessment): Flash of Light for steady single-target damage, Holy Shock when someone needs healing now, Holy Light after an Infusion of Light proc, and Light's Vigil set up on parties before a predictable group-wide hit. Pick the rank by Mana, not by habit.
Retribution: Sacred Arbiter adds 20% to Holy Strike and refreshes all your Judgements on the target. Twist of Light cuts Seal costs by 20%. Swapping between Command, Righteousness, Fury or Justice leaves an Echo, and your next swing applies the old Seal. Champion of the Light turns up to 30% of your Intellect into spell damage (WoW Handbook). In short, Twist of Light builds seal twisting into the talent tree, so you don't need an add-on. Sacred Arbiter also refreshes Judgements cast by other Paladins, so one Retribution Paladin can keep Wisdom, Light and the Crusader up together (Blizzard).
Retribution priority (our assessment): keep a damage Seal up, Judge on cooldown (it no longer eats the Seal), Holy Strike on cooldown to refresh Judgements, swap Seals to leave an Echo once you have Twist of Light, and finish with Hammer of Wrath (instant with Instrument of Law). Raid gearing is in our raids guide.
Paladin patch history
| Build | Change | Source |
|---|---|---|
| September 24 | Holy Strike damage per rank raised to 25%–50% (was 25%–40%) | Kaivax |
| September 24 | Holy Strike cooldown 10 sec (was 12); Improved Holy Strike removed | Kaivax |
| September 24 | Righteous Fury Holy threat 60% (was 90%) | Kaivax |
| October 1 | Redoubt block chance 4–20% (was 6–30%); Holy Shield block 30% (was 20%) | Kaivax |
| October 1 | Champion of the Light 20/40/60% of Intellect (was 33/66/100%) | Kaivax |
| October 8 | Retribution Aura back to Vanilla values (about 33% less); spell power ratio 6% | Kaivax |
| October 8 | Improved Seal of Fury and Shield Specialization no longer generate threat when restoring Mana | Kaivax |
| October 15 | Righteous Fury back to 90%; Champion of the Light cut to 10/20/30% | Kaivax |
| October 15 | Shield Specialization Mana 4% (was 6%); Consecration coefficient 0.042 per tick (was 0.095) | Kaivax |
| October 15 | Salvation and Mass Salvation replace the Blessings; Seal of Fury no longer overwritten by Power Word: Shield | Kaivax |
| October 15 | Reckoning stores up to 4 charges, released on your next swing | Kaivax |
| October 26 | Racials: Human Ruthless 1% crit, The Human Spirit 10%; Dwarf Earth Fury replaced by Artisan's Precision (+1% hit); Undead Touch of the Grave 15-second cooldown | Kaivax |
The trend (our reading): Blizzard has pulled back Paladin spell power scaling twice (Champion of the Light, Consecration, Retribution Aura) and raised Protection's threat back up. Check the launch notes before you commit to a Shockadin-style Intellect build.
WoW Forever Paladin stats, gear and professions
In Forever, spell, melee and ranged hit are one stat, and crit works the same way (WoW Handbook). Blizzard hasn't published stat weights, so this is a starting order reasoned from the talents above:
| Spec | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Holy | Intellect > healing power > crit > Spirit/Mana regeneration | Illumination refunds Mana on crits; Reverence keeps Spirit regeneration while casting |
| Protection | Stamina > Defense and block > hit > Strength | Templar's Bulwark scales with maximum Health; Precision helps the Judgement taunt land |
| Retribution | Strength > hit > crit > Intellect | Seals and Holy Strike scale with weapon damage; Champion of the Light turns up to 30% of Intellect into spell damage |
A Paladin wears mail until level 40 and plate after it. WoW Handbook lists 47 class-locked sets, 9 of them new, including the three Justice sets (Armor for healing, Battlegear and Battleplate for melee and tanking). Blacksmithing with Mining is the natural pair: Forever's trade camps sell Blacksmithing plans for tank, melee, healer and Paladin-specific plate sets, and the crafted pieces bind on pickup (WoW-Professions). Our professions guide compares the pairs, and the Merchant's Favor guide explains how to buy those plans.
Best Paladin race in WoW Forever
| Race | Faction | Key racials (WoW Handbook) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human | Alliance | Will to Survive (stun break), Ruthless (+1% crit since October 26), The Human Spirit (+10% Spirit) | Holy (Spirit) and PvP |
| Dwarf | Alliance | Stoneform (−10% Physical damage, removes Bleed, Poison, Disease), Artisan's Precision (+1% hit since October 26), Big Game Hunter | Protection and Retribution |
| Undead | Horde | Cannibalize (Health and Mana), Will of the Forsaken, Touch of the Grave (15-second cooldown since October 26) | The only Horde option. Bandarion Keep story and a level 60 Retribution-themed mount quest (Blizzard) |
Skyborne can't be Paladins (WoW Handbook role chart). On the Alliance, our pick is by role: Dwarf for tanking and Retribution (Stoneform plus +1% hit), Human for Holy (+10% Spirit) and PvP. Horde players have one choice. Racial tooltips and the Undead Paladin quest chain are in our race and class combos guide, and the class mount quests are in our mounts guide.
For alts and returning players
| Classic habit | Forever change |
|---|---|
| Recast your Seal after every Judgement | Judgement keeps the Seal |
| Seal twist with swing-timer add-ons | Twist of Light Echo |
| Spend talent points for Consecration or Kings | Both are trained at 20 |
| Protection with no taunt | Seal of Fury Judgement taunt, plus Swift Judgement |
| Blessing of Salvation takes a Blessing slot | Salvation stacks alongside Blessings |
| Paladins are Alliance only | Undead Paladins on the Horde |
Plan alts' talent points in WoW Handbook's calculator before launch. If you're choosing a healer, compare the Priest guide and the Shaman guide. Our professions guide lists Paladin-friendly pairs. If you're thinking about Hardcore, Templar's Bulwark and Divine Shield make Paladin one of the most forgiving classes (our assessment). The WoW Forever hub collects the rest of our class coverage.
