WoW Forever Priest Guide: Talents, Builds, Race Spells, Stats
WoW Forever Priest guide: Discipline, Holy and Shadow builds, Penance and Prayer of Mending, every race spell, stats, professions and the best race.

In this guide 17 sections
WoW Forever's Priest heals and deals Shadow damage as it did in Classic, but your race no longer decides which raid spells you bring. Every Priest trains Fear Ward and Devouring Plague at 20, Divine Spirit at 30 and the new Shadow Word: Death at 32. Each race now adds two Priest spells of its own. Discipline gets Penance, Holy gets Binding Heal and Prayer of Mending, and Shadow's raid buffs now count only for you. This WoW Forever Priest guide covers every baseline change, the talent trees as of the October 15 build, race spells, a build for each spec, stats, professions and the best race after Blizzard's October 26 racial pass.
Talent and spell data come from the final beta client as read by WoW Handbook (updated October 24), and tuning from Blizzard's development notes. The game launches on November 4, 2026, so check your tooltips on day one.
Quick summary
- Raid spells are baseline: Fear Ward and Devouring Plague at 20, Divine Spirit at 30 and Shadow Word: Death at 32 for every Priest (WoW Handbook).
- Each tree has a new 16-point talent: Soul Warding (Discipline), Binding Heal (Holy) and Vampiric Embrace (Shadow). Penance is Discipline's 21-point talent and Prayer of Mending is Holy's 31-point one (WoW Handbook; The Forever Era).
- October 15 retuned Shadow: Devouring Plague's cooldown dropped to 24 seconds (from 1 minute), and Vampiric Embrace's to 30 seconds. Shadow Word: Death went up to 18 seconds. Dark Inspiration is a new talent (Kaivax).
- Renew from several Priests stacks, and Prayer of Healing heals the party of whoever you target, pets included (WoW Handbook).
- Six races, each with two Priest spells. Gnome Priest is new. Skyborne can't be Priests (WoW Handbook). After the October 26 pass, Human's Spirit racial doubled to 10% and Troll's Berserking lasts 15 seconds (Kaivax).

WoW Forever Priest racial spells
| Race | Level 10 | Level 20 | What it adds (WoW Handbook; The Forever Era) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human | Divine Grace (new): instant heal for an ally below 50% that removes Weakened Soul | Feedback | An emergency button for the tank |
| Dwarf | Desperate Prayer | Chastise (new): Holy damage and a 2-second root on Humanoids | Self-heal and control |
| Night Elf | Starshards (more damage, now a 30-second cooldown) | Elune's Grace: 50% less chance to be hit, 15 seconds or 3 misses | Self-defense |

Best Priest spec in WoW Forever
| Spec | Role | Strength | Weakness | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Discipline | Healer, solo damage | Shields, Penance, Divine Aegis; wand and Twin Disciplines while leveling | Smaller heals | Best leveling healer |
| Holy | Healer | Binding Heal, Prayer of Mending, Spiritual Healing | Slow solo leveling | Raid healing |
| Shadow | Damage | Shadowform halves Shadow Mana costs; your own Shadow Weaving; Devouring Plague every 24 seconds | Can't heal in Shadowform | Solo leveling and PvP |
Our tier list covers where Priest lands for leveling and raids.
What the class does well: every spec heals or shields, Fear Ward and Divine Spirit are now yours whatever your race, and Prayer of Healing can heal any party. What it struggles with: cloth armor, long casts for Holy, and Mana. Shadow can't heal in Shadowform, and Holy is slow to level alone.
Build a Discipline Priest
| Talent | Row | Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power in Light | 1 | Smite and Penance +10% damage on targets with your Holy Fire or Shadow Word: Pain | New; widened October 15 |
| Wand Specialization | 1 | +25% wand damage | Changed |
| Twin Disciplines | 1 | +5% damage and healing for instant spells | New |
| Mental Strength | 2 | +10% Intellect | Changed; moved October 15 |
| Holy Precision | 2 | +18% hit with Holy spells | New |
| Improved Power Word: Shield | 3 | +20% shield absorb | Changed; moved October 15 |
| Inner Focus | 3 | Next spell free; +25% crit if non-periodic | Changed |
| Meditation | 3 | 50% of Mana regeneration while casting | Changed |
| Soul Warding | 4 (16 points) | Power Word: Shield cooldown −4 seconds, cost −15% | New |
| Penance | 5 (21 points) | Damage or heal instantly and every second for 2 seconds | New |
| Renewed Hope | 5 | +10% crit heals on Weakened Soul targets; Weakened Soul 5 seconds shorter | New |
| Divine Aegis | 6 | Non-periodic crit heals shield for 15% of the heal, up to 1,200 | New |
| Power Infusion | 7 (31 points) | +20% spell damage and healing for 15 seconds | Changed |
Starter build to level 20, healing (11/0/0), WoW Handbook: Wand Specialization 2/2, Twin Disciplines 3/5, Mental Strength 5/5, Improved Power Word: Shield 1/3 at 20. It says wanding "is most of your damage before level 20." If Mana is never the problem, it suggests putting the last point into Meditation instead.
Our math on Penance: it hits instantly and then every second for 2 seconds, so 3 pulses. At rank 1, that's 3 × 133 = 399 healing, or 3 × 44 = 132 damage (WoW Handbook tooltip). The Forever Era gives it a 12-second cooldown. On October 8, Kaivax cut Penance's damage and healing to fix it acting like a 3-second channel. He also made it more Mana-efficient than the Heal family.
Build a Holy Priest
| Talent | Row | Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twilight Focus | 1 | 70% chance to avoid pushback on any spell | New (was Healing Focus) |
| Improved Renew | 1 | +15% Renew healing | Same |
| Holy Specialization | 1 | +5% Holy crit | Same |
| Divine Fury | 2 | Smite, Holy Fire, Heal and Greater Heal 0.5 seconds faster | Same |
| Inspiration | 3 | Non-periodic crit heals give +25% armor for 15 seconds | Changed |
| Improved Healing | 4 | Heals, Penance and Prayer of Mending 15% cheaper | Changed |
| Binding Heal | 4 (16 points) | Heals your target and you; no cooldown | New |
| Litany of Light | 5 | Refunds 10% of base cost when you alternate heals | New |
| Spiritual Guidance | 5 | Healing +25% of Spirit; damage +8% of Spirit | Changed |
| Spiritual Healing | 6 | +10% healing (now 3 ranks) | Changed |
| Prayer of Mending | 7 (31 points) | Heals on damage, then jumps up to 5 times within 20 yards; 10-second cooldown | New |
The Forever Era says Binding Heal is "tuned to be as good as Flash Heal even if the Priest needs no healing." Litany of Light rewards switching heals, so a Renew, Flash Heal, Heal rotation refunds Mana that spamming one heal doesn't (our assessment).
Healing priority (our assessment): Power Word: Shield the tank before the pull, keep Renew rolling, Prayer of Mending on cooldown as Holy, Flash Heal or Binding Heal for spikes, and the Heal family for steady damage. Discipline weaves Penance on cooldown and lets Divine Aegis add shields from crit heals.
Build a Shadow Priest
| Talent | Row | Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shadow Focus | 1 | +5% hit with Shadow spells | Changed |
| Spirit Tap | 1 | +100% Spirit for 15 seconds after a kill | Changed |
| Improved Mind Blast | 2 | Mind Blast cooldown −2.5 seconds | Moved October 15 |
| Improved Shadow Word: Pain | 2 | +6 seconds duration | Moved in |
| Improved Mind Flay | 3 | Each Mind Flay tick deals 20% more than the last | New; reworked October 15 |
| Dark Inspiration | 4 | Mind Blast and full Mind Flays give you and your party +15% Spirit for 10 seconds | New, October 15 |
| Vampiric Embrace | 4 (16 points) | Party heals for 20% of your Shadow damage for 30 seconds | Changed |
| Shadow Weaving | 4 | +2% Shadow damage taken from you per stack, up to 5 | Changed |
| Devouring Contagion | 5 | Devouring Plague 50% cheaper; spreads to 2 enemies on death | New; 2 targets since October 15 |
| Early Demise | 6 | +30% Shadow Word: Death crit below 20% health | New |
| Darkness | 6 | +10% Shadow damage | Changed |
| Shadowform | 7 (31 points) | +10% Shadow damage, −50% Shadow Mana cost, +100% crit damage bonus, −15% physical damage taken | Changed |
Starter build to level 20, Shadow (2/2/7), WoW Handbook: Wand Specialization 2/2, Spirit Tap 5/5, Improved Shadow Word: Pain 2/2, Twilight Focus 2/3. "Spirit Tap after every kill is what lets you pull the next target instead of drinking."
Our math on Shadow damage: Shadow Weaving at 5 stacks (+10%), Darkness (+10%) and Shadowform (+10%) multiply to 1.10³ = +33.1% if they stack multiplicatively. Our math on Mind Flay: if each tick is 20% more than the one before, three ticks deal 1 + 1.2 + 1.44 = 3.64 units against 3, about 21% more. Our math on Devouring Plague: it lasts 24 seconds and now has a 24-second cooldown, so it can be on one target all the time.
Shadow rotation (our assessment): Shadow Word: Pain and Devouring Plague up, Mind Blast on cooldown, Mind Flay to fill (finish the channel for Dark Inspiration), and Shadow Word: Death to finish a target below 20% health with Early Demise. While leveling, wand the last few percent to save Mana and let Spirit Tap carry you into the next pull.

| Dungeon healing from 13 | Fast with a steady group | Low | Medium | Group players |
| Holy questing | Slow | Medium | Low | Players set on raid healing |

Best Priest race in WoW Forever
| Race | Faction | Priest-relevant racials (values after October 26) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Human | Alliance | Will to Survive; The Human Spirit +10% Spirit (was 5%); Ruthless +1% crit (was 2%) | Healing (Spirit); PvP; tank saves |
| Dwarf | Alliance | Stoneform: removes bleeds, poisons and diseases, −10% physical damage; Artisan's Precision +1% hit | Survivability; Shadow |
| Night Elf | Alliance | Elune's Light: +10% crit for 15 seconds; Shadowmeld | PvE burst |
| Gnome | Alliance | Eureka!: non-periodic spells 10% cheaper and 10% stronger; Escape Artist; +5% Mana | Healing; new in Forever |
| Undead | Horde | Will of the Forsaken; Touch of the Grave (30% chance for casters, 15-second internal cooldown) | PvP |
| Troll | Horde | Berserking: +10% casting speed for 15 seconds (was 10) | PvE burst |
There's no official best race. Our picks by goal: Human for healing (the Spirit racial now gives 10%) or Gnome for Mana and Eureka! on the Alliance, Dwarf or Night Elf for Shadow, and Troll for raid burst or Undead for PvP on the Horde. Remember that each race also brings two Priest spells, which may matter more than the racials. Our race and class combos guide covers the Gnome Priest.
Gear your Priest
Priests wear cloth and use staves, maces, daggers and wands (WoW Handbook). WoW Handbook lists two new Priest sets. Vestments of Conviction (healing) cuts Fear Ward's cooldown by 60 seconds at 3 pieces and Penance's and Prayer of Mending's by 1 second at 5. Raiments of Conviction (Shadow) cuts Devouring Plague's cooldown by 60 seconds at 5 pieces. Since October 15, Devouring Plague's cooldown is only 24 seconds, so expect that bonus to be retuned (our assessment). Our raids guide covers set drops; the first raids open on December 9.
Priest stats and professions
Blizzard hasn't published stat weights for Forever, so this is a starting order reasoned from the talents above:
| Spec | Start with | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Discipline | Intellect > healing power > Spirit > crit | Mental Strength adds 10% Intellect; Divine Aegis and Renewed Hope pay off on crits |
| Holy | Healing power > Spirit > Intellect > crit | Spiritual Guidance turns 25% of Spirit into healing; Meditation and Litany of Light stretch Mana |
| Shadow | Spell damage > hit > Intellect > Spirit | Shadow Focus gives only +5% hit; Spirit Tap and Dark Inspiration scale with Spirit |
Professions: Tailoring makes your own cloth sets, and Forever's trade camps sell Tailoring patterns for healers and each spell school (WoW-Professions). Enchanting pairs with it because you can disenchant the gear you make. Our professions guide compares the pairs, and the Merchant's Favor guide explains how to buy the patterns.
Advice for alts and returning players
- Classic Priests: you don't need a Dwarf for Fear Ward or an Undead for Devouring Plague; pick your race for its two Priest spells.
- Raid healers: Prayer of Healing heals the party of whoever you target, so one Priest can top up any group (WoW Handbook).
- Shadow mains: keep Devouring Plague up; it now has a 24-second cooldown to match its duration (Kaivax).
- Alts: the Shadow start levels fast on any race, and dual spec at 40 lets you keep Discipline for dungeons (our dual spec guide). Compare our Mage and Druid guides for other casters, and the Paladin guide if you are choosing between healers.
- Leveling: our leveling guide covers routes and rested XP. The WoW Forever hub collects the rest of our class coverage.

FAQ
Do all Priests get Fear Ward in WoW Forever? Yes. Every Priest trains Fear Ward and Devouring Plague at level 20 (WoW Handbook).
What is the best Priest spec for leveling? Shadow. WoW Handbook's Shadow start uses Spirit Tap, Improved Shadow Word: Pain and a wand so you rarely stop to drink.
What does Penance do? It's Discipline's 21-point talent: it damages an enemy or heals an ally instantly and every second for 2 seconds. The Forever Era gives it a 12-second cooldown (WoW Handbook).
What is the best race for Priest in WoW Forever? There's no official best race. Human (10% Spirit since October 26) and Gnome are the Alliance healing picks, Troll's 15-second Berserking is the Horde raid pick, and Undead is the PvP pick. Skyborne can't be Priests (Kaivax; WoW Handbook).
Can Gnomes be Priests? Yes, for the first time. Their Priest spells are Confounding Flash and Contingency Plan (WoW Handbook; The Forever Era). Skyborne still can't be Priests.
Does Renew stack from multiple Priests? Yes. Renew from several Priests can be on one target, and since October 15 high ranks no longer block other Priests' Renews (The Forever Era; Kaivax).
