THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • Fame has no combat value. A high-fame character "hits exactly as hard as one with none" (MapleClassic Wiki).
  • 13 quests give fame, 23 points in total, at levels 21–48. Shumi, Rowen the Fairy, and Sabitrama give most of it (wiki).
  • Players give it: each character has one fame action per day, to raise or lower someone's fame.
  • Only one launch quest needs fame: Building a New House For Blackbull needs 10 fame, and it rewards a weapon scroll (wiki, Chaomoon).
  • Sources disagree on the per-person limit, the Blackbull quest level, and the level needed to give fame.

Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.

Shumi's Lost Roll of Cash 35 2 Shumi 7
Shumi's Lost Sack of Cash 35 3 Shumi 10

Building a New House For Blackbull 48 2 Blackbull 23

Key point: by the wiki's levels, a character who does every quest through the three Shumi quests reaches exactly 10 fame at level 35, with no player fame at all. Proof of Companionship comes from Lakelis, the Kerning City party quest NPC, so plan it alongside your KPQ runs. For each quest's other rewards, see our quests worth doing guide.

Run the two big fame chains

Rowen the Fairy, 9 fame (Ellinia, level 36+). Henesys.gg lists Returned Secret Book as the prerequisite, and mscw-guidebook's quest text says Rowen trusts you after the Fresh Milk errand for Mr. Wetbottom's son Ronnie. You kill Zombie Lupins and collect their Cursed Dolls, 570 across all five steps (henesys.gg). The wiki's best map is Monkey Swamp III near Kerning City, with Monkey Swamp II and Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest II as alternatives.

Step Dolls Fame (wiki) Item reward
1 50 1 7 of one random ore
2 70 1 10 of one random gem ore
3 100 2 5 Gold Ore or 5 Diamond Ore (50/50, wiki)
4 150 2 Gloves Attack or Magic Attack Scroll: Intermediate
5 200 3 A hat for your class

Henesys.gg: "Every step pays 7,020 EXP and 1,140 Mesos."

Shumi, 6 fame (Kerning City, level 35+). For Shumi's Lost Coin, go to Construction Site B1 deep in the subway, climb to the top, and open the chest for Shumi's Coin (mscw-guidebook, planet-helper). The reward is 6,720 EXP, 1,111 mesos, and a bundle of Return Scrolls, including five Nearest Town and three each for the six Victoria towns (planet-helper). The Roll of Cash and Sack of Cash follow, worth 2 and 3 fame.

Why these two first: together they give 15 of the 23 quest fame, and Shumi's three quests alone take a quest-only character from 4 to 10 fame.

Give and receive daily fame

The wiki's Classic World rules:

  1. One fame action per day, and it's global: you pick one recipient, not one per friend.
  2. Raising and lowering fame use the same action.
  3. No per-person limit: "A character can be famed at any time, by anyone, as long as the giver still has that day's action."
  4. Fame can go negative, "with no known floor."

Example: a guild of 10 players who each give one fame a day can raise one member by 10 in a day. A solo player can only gain fame from quests.

A good habit: fame your KPQ party after a good run, since your one action a day is otherwise wasted.

Unlock Blackbull's quest

Detail Value Source
Fame needed 10 Wiki, Chaomoon
Level 48, after Fixing Blackbull's House Wiki, NiaMeowDB
Materials Stone Golem's Piece of Rock ×100, Processed Wood ×30, Screws ×30, Blackbull's Deed to the Land ×1 Chaomoon
Reward Your choice of a class Weapon 10% scroll, plus 2 fame Chaomoon, wiki

A 10% scroll fails most of the time, so read our scrolling guide before deciding whether to use it or sell it.

Plan your path to 10 fame

Level Fame from quests (wiki) Gap to 10
21 1 9
25 4 6
35 10 0
36 up to 19 —
  • If the quest unlocks at level 30 (Chaomoon), you'll have only about 4 quest fame by then, so you'll need about 6 player fames.
  • If it unlocks at level 48, the quest table alone gets you past 10 by level 35.
  • Either way, keep the Stone Golem materials from your Golem Temple training. See our training guide for the maps.

Don't buy or sell fame

The wiki's trivia section explains that in the original game, players sold fame for mesos and paid others to defame rivals. "There was no escrow and no trade window," so one side always had to trust the other. A deeply negative total became something some players showed off.

Nothing in the client protects a fame trade, and a defame costs the giver their only daily action. Better ways to make mesos are in our mesos guide.

Compare ways to get fame

Method Fame Cost Trade-off (sources)
Quests 23 total, once per character Time and materials Slow, at 1–3 per quest (wiki)
Guild or party swaps 1 per giver per day Free Needs active friends
Buying from strangers 1 per seller per day Mesos No escrow; poor value

Avoid the common mistakes

  • Spending your daily action on a defame. It uses the same single action as a fame (wiki), so it costs you a chance to help a friend.
  • Skipping Shumi at level 35. Those three quests are 6 fame, the biggest jump toward the Blackbull gate.
  • Selling Cursed Dolls early. You need 570 across Rowen's chain (henesys.gg).
  • Expecting combat value. Fame adds nothing to damage, HP, or accuracy.

Plan for returning players and alts

  • Returning players: fame works mostly like it did originally, but modern MapleStory extras such as Charm points and fame medals aren't part of Classic World (modern MapleStory Wiki vs the Classic wiki).
  • Alts: fame is per character (wiki). An alt needs its own quests or swaps to unlock Blackbull.
  • Guilds: a daily fame rotation is the cheapest way to get members past the gate.

What may change at Grand Launch

This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.

FAQ

How do you get fame in MapleStory Classic? From 13 quests worth 23 fame in total, and from other players, who can each give one fame per day (wiki).

Does fame do anything? It has no combat effect. At launch it gates one quest, Blackbull's, at 10 fame.

How many times a day can you fame? Once per day, and that one action covers raising or lowering anyone's fame.

Can you fame the same person every day? The Classic wiki says there's no per-person limit. The original game allowed it only once a month, so test it in game.

Can fame go negative? Yes, with no known floor.

What level is the Blackbull quest? Level 48, with 10 fame banked and Fixing Blackbull's House done (wiki, NiaMeowDB).

Should I buy fame? No. Sources say it's poor value, and nothing in the game protects the trade.
