THE GUIDE

Checked against v1.0.0 on October 29, 2026.

The Caretaker's Ledger is a six-quest chain that Classic World added to Victoria Island, and it's one of the best EXP chains before level 30. This MapleStory Classic Caretaker's Ledger guide shows how to find The Circulation Desk above Ellinia's Magic Library, where to farm the Torn Ledger Pages, the full route across five towns, every reward, and how each job should handle the fairies in the live Grand Launch game.

Quick summary

  • It's a 6-quest chain from level 28. Every step pays 4,090 EXP and 892 mesos, for 24,540 EXP and 5,352 mesos in total (henesys.gg, maplestory.quest).
  • It starts in a hidden room. Lyn the Librarian waits in The Circulation Desk, a new room reached through a hidden portal in Ellinia's Magic Library (maplestory.quest map data, henesys.gg).
  • The only grind is 25 Torn Ledger Pages from fairies. The October 15 patch cut the count from 50 to 25 (NiaMeowDB, henesys.gg), so older guides that say 50 are out of date.
  • You'll cross Victoria Island. The chain sends you to Henesys, Perion, Sleepywood, Kerning City and back to Ellinia.
  • The final reward is the Faded Maple Leaf Earrings. They're a level 28 earring with +26 magic defense, +8 MP, +1% critical damage and 5 slots, plus 50 Blue Potions and other potions along the way (henesys.gg).

Know the chain at a glance

All six quests share one level gate (28) and one reward of 4,090 EXP and 892 mesos each. The item rewards differ. This table follows maplestory.quest's quest pages, and henesys.gg's reward list matches it.

# Quest Given by Where What you do Item reward
1 The Filing Error Lyn the Librarian The Circulation Desk, Ellinia Collect 25 Torn Ledger Pages from fairies, then get Chief Stan to stamp the cover 10 Blue Potions, 10 Orange Potions
2 Chief Stan's Signature Chief Stan Henesys Take the Incomplete Ledger to Manji 10 Elixirs
3 Repairing the Book Manji Perion Talk to Manji, who sends you to Chrishrama 20 Blue Potions
4 The Faded Ink Chrishrama Sleepywood Carry the Bound Ledger; the Hotel Receptionist sends you on to Kerning City 10 Mana Elixirs
5 The Dark Lord's Signature Dark Lord Thieves' Hideout, Kerning City Show him the Stamped Ledger; Alex fills in the missing part 20 Blue Potions
6 We Hold Your Place Grendel the Really Old Magic Library, Ellinia Bring the Amended Ledger, then return it to Lyn Faded Maple Leaf Earrings

henesys.gg lists the quest IDs as 10213 to 10218 and places the chain in Round 1 of its Quest Optimizer, for levels 27 to 32. maplestory.quest notes that some hand-in NPCs on its pages are a "best guess" from the client. Follow the quest log in game if it points somewhere else.

Find The Circulation Desk

The Circulation Desk is map 10002005, a town-type room with three NPCs: Lyn the Librarian, Sabrina the Scribe and Jon the Justicar (maplestory.quest). Only Lyn gives a quest. Sabrina and Jon start none in the current data.

Follow these steps:

  1. Go to Ellinia and enter the Magic Library, where Grendel the Really Old stands. Our Ellinia guide maps the town.
  2. Look for the second portal. maplestory.quest's map data shows the Magic Library now has two portals, and the one to The Circulation Desk is marked hidden. It doesn't show on the map like a normal portal.
  3. Climb toward the upper part of the room. The quest's own hint text reads, "Rumor has it there is a hidden room above the Magic Library" (NiaMeowDB, maplestory.quest). henesys.gg also calls it a hidden room above the library.
  4. Take the portal and talk to Lyn the Librarian, who stands in the middle of the room (henesys.gg).

The Circulation Desk returns you to Ellinia, so you can't get lost on the way out. Neither source gives the hidden portal's exact coordinates. If you can't find it, try the up arrow along the upper platforms.

Collect the Torn Ledger Pages

Lyn says the fairies tore pages out of her book to build nests, and the rain did the rest (NiaMeowDB dialogue). Fairy 1 through Fairy 4 drop the pages, per player reports on maplestory.quest. Fairy 1 has no spawn map in the Public Release, so you'll hunt Fairy 2, 3 and 4.

Map Fairy Spawns Respawn Source
Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North VI Fairy 3 2 180 s maplestory.quest; our Forest Up North guide
Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North VII Fairy 3 2 180 s maplestory.quest
Someone Else's House (Hidden Street) Fairy 2 2 180 s maplestory.quest
Someone Else's Grave (Hidden Street) Fairy 3 listed not shown maplestory.quest
The Entrance of Golem's Temple Fairy 4 3 not shown maplestory.quest
The Breathing Rock (Hidden Street) Fairy 4 2 180 s maplestory.quest
Golem's Temple I to IV Fairy 4 1 each 180 s maplestory.quest; our Golem's Temple guide

The quest journal names the first three maps directly: "Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North VI, Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North VII, or Someone Else's House" (NiaMeowDB). The Golem's Temple maps come from Fairy 4's spawn list, not the quest text.

Every fairy is level 29 with 593 HP and gives 54 EXP. They're weak to Poison and resist Holy and Lightning (maplestory.quest). maplestory.quest lists Fairy 1 inflicting Stun and Fairy 4 inflicting Weakness, each at a 50% chance, so carry a cure potion if you're a low-HP job.

Run the numbers on fairy farming

Fairies are slow. A 180-second respawn with two spawns means one map gives at most 40 fairy kills an hour on one channel. That's our arithmetic from maplestory.quest's respawn timers, not a measured rate.

No drop rate is published, so this table shows what each case would mean. These are our assumptions, not data.

Assumed page drop rate Kills for 25 pages Hours on one 2-spawn map
60% about 42 about 1
40% about 63 about 1.6
25% 100 about 2.5

The lesson is simple: don't camp one map. Clear a map, then change channels or walk to the next fairy map while it respawns. Windia has 40 channels since Grand Launch (Nexon), so channel-hopping gives you far more fairies than waiting. Golem's Temple I to IV sit next to each other, so a loop through all four plus the entrance is the densest Fairy 4 route on paper.

Once you have a few drops, time yourself. If pages come quickly, the rate is high and the chain is a fast win. If they come slowly, pick up the chain later, when you're passing through with a party, rather than spending your launch evening on it.

Choose a route by where you're training

Because the fairies sit around Ellinia and the Golem's Temple area, the best start depends on your current map. The chain has no timer, so you can accept quest 1 and finish the pages whenever it suits you.

Your situation Best plan Why
Training near Ellinia at 28 Accept quest 1, farm Forest Up North VI and VII, then hand in Shortest walk from the Magic Library
Training near Sleepywood or the Golem's Temple Accept quest 1 on your next Ellinia visit; farm the Golem's Temple loop More Fairy 4 spawns in one area
Running the Kerning City Party Quest Do the chain between runs; step 5 passes through Kerning City KPQ needs level 21+ and runs on channels 3–12 (Nexon), so the levels overlap
Short on mesos Do the chain early 5,352 mesos and 80 potions cut your shop bill
Leveling fast with a party Skip the pages until later Fairy maps hold 1 to 3 spawns, too few for a party

After the pages, the route runs Ellinia, Henesys, Perion, Sleepywood, Kerning City and Ellinia again (henesys.gg's walkthrough). Henesys to Perion goes through the Deep Forest roads, and Perion to Sleepywood goes through the Perion Dungeon Entrance, per maplestory.quest's pathfinder steps. Our travel guide covers cabs and Return Scrolls if you'd rather pay than walk.

Walk the chain step by step

This is henesys.gg's walkthrough in short form, checked against maplestory.quest's story text.

  1. Lyn the Librarian (The Circulation Desk). Accept The Filing Error. She asks for the pages and tells you Chief Stan has the stamp.
  2. Fairies. Collect the pages. Your quest log shows the real count.
  3. Chief Stan (Henesys). He stamps the cover and completes quest 1. Talk to him again for the Incomplete Ledger.
  4. Manji (Perion, left side). He recognizes the handwriting and sends you to Chrishrama.
  5. Chrishrama (Sleepywood). He rebinds the ledger but can't restore one long entry. Take the Bound Ledger to the Hotel Receptionist in the Sleepywood Hotel.
  6. Dark Lord (Thieves' Hideout, Kerning City). He finds his own name in the ledger and "didn't care for it," then sends you to Alex on the rooftops (maplestory.quest story text).
  7. Alex (Kerning City, right side). He fills in the part about the bench.
  8. Grendel the Really Old (Magic Library). He reads the entry, can't make sense of it, and sends you back up to Lyn.
  9. Lyn the Librarian. She explains the entry, writes you into her registry and hands over the Faded Maple Leaf Earrings.

We won't spoil what the entry turns out to be. It's a short story about Maple's old adventurers, and it's worth reading in game.

Weigh the rewards

The chain's 24,540 EXP equals about 33.6% of level 28, which takes 73,080 EXP in our EXP table. That's our calculation. Our quests worth doing page ranks it as the top EXP chain before level 30.

Reward Amount Notes
EXP 24,540 6 × 4,090 (henesys.gg)
Mesos 5,352 6 × 892
Blue Potions 50 MP potions; useful for magicians and skill users
Orange Potions 10 HP potions
Elixirs 10 Restore HP and MP; see our potions guide
Mana Elixirs 10 MP
Faded Maple Leaf Earrings 1 Level 28; +26 magic defense, +8 MP, +1% critical damage, 5 slots

maplestory.quest lists the earrings at a base of 26 magic defense and 8 MP, with a 23 to 29 and 7 to 9 range for dropped copies. It doesn't say whether the quest copy rolls. An NPC pays 4,200 mesos for them. Five slots are a lot for a level 28 earring. If you scroll, they can carry earring scrolls through the midgame. Our earrings guide compares them with every other earring, and the scrolling guide covers the odds.

Plan the chain by job

The fairies' elements matter more than their level.

Job Fairy matchup Tip
Fire/Poison Wizard Poison is the weakness Your poison skill hits them for 1.25×; easy farming
Ice/Lightning Wizard Lightning is resisted Use ice or plain attacks
Cleric Holy is resisted Expect slow kills; party up or use basic attacks
Warriors Neutral Bring a cure potion for Weakness
Bowmen and Thieves Neutral Range keeps you out of touch range

The multipliers come from maplestory.quest: weak ×1.25, resisted ×0.75. Our elements guide explains how element resistances combine.

Alts and returning players

  • Every character does it. Quests are per character. Each alt that reaches 28 can earn the 24,540 EXP and the earrings again.
  • Accept before you farm. In the original game, quest-only items usually drop only while the quest is active. We expect the same here, but no source confirms it for Classic, so accept The Filing Error before you hunt fairies.
  • Returning players won't recognize it. The Circulation Desk and all three of its NPCs are new in the Public Release (maplestory.quest). Classic-era guides won't mention them.
  • Combine it with citizenship. Kerning City and Henesys citizenship quests run at levels 27 to 57 (maplestory.quest). Our citizenship guide shows which ones fit the same trip.

What changed for the Caretaker's Ledger at Grand Launch

The chain itself is the same in the Grand Launch build (v1.0.0, October 21, 2026): six quests, level 28, the same rewards. Three changes around it matter:

  • 25 pages, not 50. The October 15 patch halved the Torn Ledger Page count, and Grand Launch kept it (henesys.gg update notes; NiaMeowDB's Filing Error page).
  • More potions from fairies. Nexon's Grand Launch maintenance notes raised potion drop rates for monsters between levels 10 and 30, and every fairy is level 29.
  • More channels. Windia went to 40 channels, which makes the channel-hopping loop above much faster.

The Halloween event running to November 18 also sends players to Ellinia's Tree Tunnel and Field South of Ellinia, so expect more traffic on the fairy routes this month. The MapleStory Classic hub collects every guide for the game.

FAQ

Where is The Circulation Desk in MapleStory Classic? It's a hidden room off the Magic Library in Ellinia. Enter the library, climb toward the top, and take the hidden portal to reach Lyn the Librarian (maplestory.quest, henesys.gg).

What level do you need for the Caretaker's Ledger? Level 28. All six quests use the same gate (maplestory.quest, henesys.gg).

How many Torn Ledger Pages do you need? 25. The October 15 patch cut the count from 50, and Grand Launch kept it at 25 (NiaMeowDB, henesys.gg).

Which monsters drop Torn Ledger Pages? Fairies. Players report drops from Fairy 1 to 4 on maplestory.quest. Fairy 2, 3 and 4 spawn in Forest Up North VI and VII, Someone Else's House and the Golem's Temple maps.

How much EXP does the Caretaker's Ledger give? 24,540 EXP and 5,352 mesos across six quests. That's about a third of level 28, by our math.

Are the Faded Maple Leaf Earrings good? For level 28, yes. They give +26 magic defense, +8 MP and +1% critical damage, with 5 scroll slots (henesys.gg). Keep them unless you're replacing them with a scrolled earring.
