MapleStory Classic Shade Guide: Unlock Quest, Debuffs, Respawn
MapleStory Classic Shade guide: the A Grudge That Won't Rest unlock, Niora Hospital route, Seal and Curse debuffs, Wraith adds, accuracy.

Quick summary
- Shade is new. henesys.gg calls it "new in the launch build." It's a level 48 undead boss with 47,000 HP and 488 EXP, weak to Holy and resistant to Poison (NiaMeowDB, MapleClassic Wiki).
- You reach it through a quest. The Kerning City citizenship chain "A Grudge That Won't Rest" needs level 47 and citizenship grade 8. Jane Doe in Niora Hospital points you to a hidden passage. It leads through The Murky Swamp to the Cabin of the Forsaken (henesys.gg).
- It fights with debuffs, not big hits. NiaMeowDB lists Seal (no skills for 3 seconds), Darkness (lower accuracy) and Curse (likely less EXP). Below 50% HP it calls in Wraiths.
- Bring Holy damage. Holy deals 25% extra (NiaMeowDB). Its defense cuts weapon attacks by 23% but magic only by 9%.
- It respawns about every hour (wiki, NiaMeowDB, Metaroad's timer).
Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.
Read Shade's stats

| EXP | 488 | NiaMeowDB, wiki, maplestory-classic.com |
| Weapon attack / magic attack | 620 / 682 | NiaMeowDB, wiki |
| Weapon / magic defense | 30 / 10 | maplestory-classic.com |
| Damage cut | Weapon attacks 23%, magic 9% | henesys.gg |
| Accuracy / avoid | 138 / 35 | NiaMeowDB, maplestory-classic.com |
| Speed | 5 (fast) | NiaMeowDB, maplestory-classic.com |
| Knockback threshold | 3,250 damage | NiaMeowDB, wiki |
| HP recovery | 470 per tick | NiaMeowDB |
| Type | Undead, weak to Holy (+25%), resists Poison | NiaMeowDB, wiki, henesys.gg |
| Touch damage | 681–929 | NiaMeowDB |
NiaMeowDB ranks Shade 9th of 184 monsters for HP and 173rd of 182 for HP per EXP (96.31). Like every launch boss, it's a kill for the quest and the fun, not for EXP.
The defense numbers matter most. henesys.gg says its defense "cuts weapon attacks, stars and arrows included, by 23%," while magic loses only 9%. Mages have an easier time here than physical classes.
Unlock the Cabin of the Forsaken
henesys.gg lays out the five steps of "A Grudge That Won't Rest." It needs level 47+, Kerning City citizenship grade 8+, and "First Greeting" with Chun Ji done first.
| Step | Quest | What to do | NPC location (henesys.gg) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | A Quiet Line of Work | Talk to Chun Ji, then defeat 50 Wraiths on Line 2 <Area 3> or Line 1 <Area 4> | Kerning City Construction Site, right side |
| 2 | Another Lead | Report to Chun Ji, then talk to Roxy | Kerning City Civic Center, far right |
| 3 | A Name She Couldn't Say | Talk to Jane Doe. She senses "a powerful force behind a hidden passage on the hospital's first floor." | Niora Hospital, right side |
| 4 | An Old Grudge | Take the passage through The Murky Swamp to the Cabin of the Forsaken. Defeat 1 Shade. | — |
| 5 | An Unresolved Question | Report to Roxy, talk to her again, then return to Chun Ji | Civic Center, then Construction Site |
Rewards:
| Reward | henesys.gg (whole chain) | Wiki (An Old Grudge step only) |
|---|---|---|
| EXP | 50,160 across five steps | 11,400 |
| Mesos | 6,497 | 1,477 |
| Kerning City contribution | 1,000 | 180 |
| Items | 20 Blue Potions, a Gloves Crit. Rate Scroll (Intermediate or Greater, 50/50) | 10 Elixirs |
The 1,000 contribution counts toward Kerning City citizenship. Our citizenship guide explains how grades work and how to reach grade 8.
Tip: do the 50 Wraiths with your boss party. Wraiths are Holy-weak undead with 2,350 HP and 122 EXP each (wiki). Our Cleric guide uses the same subway maps for training.
NiaMeowDB lists the Cabin as a Hidden Street map with one spawn point and Kerning City as its respawn map. Neither henesys.gg nor the wiki says whether you can re-enter after the quest. Check in game before planning repeat kills.
Handle the debuffs
Shade has no listed attack besides touch damage. It works through four mob skills (NiaMeowDB). NiaMeowDB uses "likely" for the effects, because they come from data, not testing.
| Skill | Effect | Lasts | How often | Reach | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Seal | "Likely prevents you from using skills" | 3 s | Every 120 s | 900 × 600 px | Refresh buffs before it lands. Don't count on an emergency skill. |
| Darkness | "Likely lowers your accuracy" | 6 s | Every 60 s | 600 × 240 px | Expect more misses for 6 seconds. Save big MP-cost skills until it ends. |
| Curse | "Likely reduces the EXP you earn" | 120 s | Every 35 s | 600 × 240 px | Don't train right after the fight. |
| Summon | 3 Wraiths every 30 s once Shade drops below 50% HP (23,500 HP), up to 3 | — | Every 30 s | — | Kill the Wraiths fast, or burn Shade down from 50%. |
Seal has the widest reach, at 900 × 600 px. Darkness and Curse reach 600 × 240 px, so a ranged player standing well back may avoid them. That's our reading of NiaMeowDB's reach numbers, not a test.
Shade's skill animation has a 1.32-second telegraph before it lands (NiaMeowDB animation timing). Use it to drink a potion or recast a buff.
Check your accuracy
| Your level | Accuracy to never miss (NiaMeowDB, Avoid 35) |
|---|---|
| 48 | 114 |
| 43 | 136 |
| 38 | 158 |
The quest needs level 47, so most players fight at 47 to 50. Darkness lowers accuracy for 6 seconds, so give yourself some extra. Our accuracy guide explains the formula.
Count your hits
This is plain division of 47,000 HP, before regen. The physical column takes off henesys.gg's 23% cut and the magic column its 9% cut. The Holy column adds NiaMeowDB's 25% to magic.
| Damage per hit (before defense) | Physical hits | Magic hits | Holy magic hits |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1,000 | 62 | 52 | 42 |
| 2,000 | 31 | 26 | 21 |
| 3,000 | 21 | 18 | 14 |
| 5,000 | 13 | 11 | 9 |
Shade recovers 470 HP per tick (NiaMeowDB). Neither source gives the tick interval. Hits below 3,250 damage won't knock it back (NiaMeowDB, wiki).
Pick a plan by class
| Class | Role | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Cleric | Main damage | Holy deals 25% extra (NiaMeowDB), and magic loses only 9% to its defense (henesys.gg). Heal damages undead, but our Cleric guide notes Heal damage is split among targets and halved, so kill with Holy Arrow. |
| Ice/Lightning Wizard | Damage | Magic loses only 9%. No Ice or Lightning resistance is listed. |
| Fire/Poison Wizard | Fire damage | Shade resists Poison (wiki, henesys.gg). Use fire skills. |
| Warriors | Hold Shade, clear Wraiths | Weapon attacks lose 23%. Use Rush or Slash Blast on the adds. |
| Bowmen and Assassins | Ranged damage | Arrows and stars lose 23% too. Range may keep you out of Darkness and Curse. |
A party at level 47–50 with a Cleric and a damage dealer matches the plan in our bosses guide. Bring HP potions. Our potions guide ranks them by HP per meso.
Time the respawn
| Source | Timer |
|---|---|
| MapleClassic Wiki | 60 min. It "returns an hour after it is defeated." |
| NiaMeowDB | About every 1 hour |
| Metaroad Boss Timer | Game timer 1h |
For the other 1-hour bosses, Metaroad and NiaMeowDB say live respawns can run closer to 90 minutes. Nobody has published a Shade figure yet. Log your kill time and channel.
Know the drops
No source lists confirmed drops yet:
- henesys.gg: "No drops listed for Shade yet."
- maplestory-classic.com: "No drops recorded yet."
- The wiki's drop table is empty.
- NiaMeowDB's community drop list is still filling in. It shows no historical MapleSEA list for Shade, which fits henesys.gg's note that Shade is new to Classic World.
For now, the rewards are the quest's: EXP, mesos, contribution, potions and the gloves scroll.
Plan alts and returning players
- Returning from old MapleStory? henesys.gg calls Shade new in the launch build, and NiaMeowDB has no old MapleSEA drop list for it, so old guides won't help. It's also quest-gated, unlike Mano or Mushmom.
- Bringing an alt? Every character needs Kerning City grade 8 and level 47 for the quest. A Cleric alt makes the fight much easier.
- Short on citizenship? Grade 8 takes time. Plan the Kerning City quests in our citizenship guide first.
- Next steps: the Zombie Mushmom guide covers the next undead boss, and the Jr. Balrog guide covers the top boss at level 80.
- Leveling fast? See our MapleStory Classic hub and powerleveling page.

What may change at Grand Launch
This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.
