The Kerning City Subway is the main training dungeon under Kerning City, and it carries most characters from level 15 to 55. This MapleStory Classic Kerning Subway guide covers all eight Line 1 and Line 2 maps, every monster with its accuracy target, the best map for each level, the quests that send you down, and what changed in the subway at Grand Launch.
Quick summary
- The Kerning City Subway has 8 training maps on two lines. Bubbling (Lv 15) and Stirge (Lv 20) are near the entrance, Jr. Wraiths (Lv 34) are in the middle, and Wraiths (Lv 48) are at the far ends (MapleStory Quest map data).
- Wraiths lead the subway, and NiaMeowDB rates Line 2 <Area 2> highest for 46–50. Its theoretical ceiling is about 3.49M EXP per hour, the highest of any Victoria Island map on NiaMeowDB's list. planet-helper ranks Line 1 <Area 4> first among subway maps for 46–50 instead.
- Every subway map holds only 16–18 monsters at once (planet-helper), whether it has 38 spawn points or 107. On the Wraith maps, what matters is the monster mix, not the point count.
- Clerics and Fire/Poison mages have the advantage here. Jr. Wraiths are undead and weak to Fire and Holy, and Wraiths are undead and weak to Holy (MapleStory Quest, NiaMeowDB).
- Six quests send you down, from Stirge Phobia at level 17 to A Quiet Line of Work at 47. Each wants 20–50 kills (NiaMeowDB, MapleStory Quest).
Get into the subway
| Step | Where | Who | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Kerning City | Walk to the Subway Ticketing Booth | MSQ |
| 2 | Subway Ticketing Booth | Jake (quests) and The Ticket Gate | MSQ |
| 3 | Line 1 <Area 1> | First training map, Bubbling only | MSQ |
| 4 | Transfer Area | Hub: Line 1 <Area 2> one way, Line 2 <Area 1> the other | MSQ |
The B1, B2 and B3 maps (Shumi's lost-money jump quests) are separate maps reached from the same booth. They use Lv 200 Super Stirges and Super Jr. Neckis as hazards and are covered in our jump quest guide. The Kerning City Party Quest starts with Lakelis in town; see our KPQ guide.
Know every subway map
| Map | Monsters (spawn points) | Total points | At once / EXP per clear | Max EXP/hr | Best levels |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Line 1 <Area 1> | Bubbling 15 (64) | 64 | 18 / 504 | 640,000 | 15–20 |
| Transfer Area | Stirge 20 (38) | 38 | 16 / 592 | 502,143 | 18–23 |
| Line 1 <Area 2> | Jr. Wraith 34 (69), Stirge (21) | 90 | — | 1,903,929 | 31–38 |
| Line 2 <Area 1> | Jr. Wraith (83), Jr. Necki 21 (14) | 97 | 18 / 1,017 | 2,151,429 | 31–38 |
| Line 1 <Area 3> | Wraith 48 (48), Jr. Wraith (31), Stirge (18) | 97 | — | — | 40–46 |
| Line 1 <Area 4> | Wraith (59) | 59 | 18 / 2,196 | 2,570,714 | 46–55 |
| Line 2 <Area 2> | Wraith (57), Jr. Wraith (32), Jr. Necki (18) | 107 | — | 3,488,571 | 44–52 |
| Line 2 <Area 3> | Wraith (68) | 68 | 17 / 2,074 | 2,962,857 | 46–55 |
Why the point counts don't matter much. Line 2 <Area 1> has 97 spawn points, 83 of them Jr. Wraiths (NiaMeowDB), yet planet-helper counts only 18 up at once. Line 2 <Area 2> and <Area 3> hold 17 at once. That cap is why the 59-point Line 1 <Area 4> keeps up with the 107-point Line 2 <Area 2>. On the bigger map, Jr. Wraiths and Jr. Neckis take some of those 17–18 slots. By our math, if every slot is a Wraith, one clear is about 2,070–2,200 EXP. Mixed maps give less per clear but faster kills. NiaMeowDB's higher ceiling for Line 2 <Area 2> comes from its faster refill model, not from what's on screen at once.
Know the monsters
| Monster | Lv | HP | EXP | Element | Notes | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bubbling | 15 | 259 | 28 | Weak to Lightning | Fast mover | MSQ, NiaMeowDB |
| Stirge | 20 | 296 | 37 | Neutral | Flies, so some melee swings miss it | MSQ, NiaMeowDB |
| Jr. Necki | 21 | — | 39 | — | Filler on Line 2 | MSQ |
| Jr. Wraith | 34 | 982 | 66 | Weak to Fire and Holy, undead | Avoid 24 → 25 in the Public Release | MSQ |
| Wraith | 48 | 2,350 | 122 | Weak to Holy, undead | Regenerates 50 HP; avoid 31 → 32 in the Public Release | MSQ |
The avoid changes are small but matter for accuracy-starved builds. Wraith EXP also dropped from 132 to 122 and Jr. Wraith EXP from 70 to 66 between the second closed test and launch (NiaMeowDB change history).
Hit them: accuracy for each subway monster
NiaMeowDB lists the accuracy a physical attacker needs to never miss each monster:
| Monster | Avoid | ACC at its own level | ACC 5 levels below | ACC 10 levels below |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bubbling | 9 | 31 (Lv 15) | 37 (Lv 10) | 42 (Lv 5) |
| Stirge | 13 | 44 (Lv 20) | 52 (Lv 15) | 61 (Lv 10) |
| Jr. Wraith | 25 | 82 (Lv 34) | 98 (Lv 29) | 114 (Lv 24) |
| Wraith | 32 | 104 (Lv 48) | 125 (Lv 43) | 145 (Lv 38) |
The jump from 104 to 125 is why going into Area 4 at 43 feels much worse than at 48. If you miss often, our accuracy guide explains the hit-rate formula. Undead also means a Cleric's Heal deals damage here; see our Cleric guide. Fire/Poison mages get a weakness bonus on Jr. Wraiths; see the Fire/Poison guide.
Check spawn rates and respawn timers
NiaMeowDB's map tables give each subway map a mob-rate multiplier and the respawn timer:
| Map | Mob rate | Respawn |
|---|---|---|
| Line 1 <Area 1> | ×0.8 | about 7.5 s |
| Transfer Area | ×0.7 | about 7.5 s |
| Line 1 <Area 2> to <Area 4>, Line 2 <Area 1> to <Area 3> | ×0.9 | about 7.5 s |
| B1 to B3 (Line 3 Construction Site) | ×0.5 | about 7.5 s |
The Transfer Area has the lowest rate of the training maps, which is one reason Stirges thin out fast when two players share it. The Subway Depot maps hold a handful of Bubblings, Jr. Wraiths and Wraiths (9 to 12 each), so they are not training maps.
Follow the subway route by level
- 15–20: Line 1 <Area 1>. Bubblings only (NiaMeowDB), so every kill takes the same number of hits. Lightning magicians have the weakness.
- 18–23: Transfer Area. Stirges only. planet-helper says both of these maps "get crowded." The Ant Tunnel is the alternative; see our Sleepywood guide.
- 31–38: Line 2 <Area 1>. It's NiaMeowDB's top pick for 31–35 (2.15M ceiling) and planet-helper's second choice behind The Burnt Land V. Line 1 <Area 2> is the overflow map. Our 30–45 meso guide puts Jr. Wraiths at about 17,900–18,300 mesos per 1,000 kills, mostly from Tablecloths and ores.
- 40–46: Line 1 <Area 3>. A mix of Wraith, Jr. Wraith and Stirge, which bridges the gap until Wraiths are on-level.
- 46–55: Line 1 <Area 4>, Line 2 <Area 2>, or Line 2 <Area 3>. planet-helper says these three are close enough to "pick whichever is empty," and that two overseas sources rank Line 2 <Area 3> first for 46–55.
Take the subway quests
| Quest | Level | Asks for | Giver / area | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stirge Phobia | 17 | Needs Kerning citizenship grade 2 and First Greeting with Jake | Jake, Ticketing Booth: 687 EXP, 388 mesos, 50 contribution | MSQ |
| Luke the Security Guy | 19 | 20 Stirges | Henesys | NiaMeowDB |
| Stranger's Request | 23 | 40 Stirges | Kerning City | NiaMeowDB |
| Silas Irons in Need of Help (weekly) | 15 | 25 Bubblings | Crafting | NiaMeowDB |
| Second Material Delivery for Building a New House | 41 | 50 Bubblings, 50 Jr. Wraiths | Ellinia | NiaMeowDB |
| Jane's First Challenge / Jane's Second Challenge | 44 | 50 Wraiths each (the first also wants Copper Drakes) | Victoria Island | NiaMeowDB |
| A Quiet Line of Work | 47 | 50 Wraiths | Citizenship | NiaMeowDB |
Pick up the Wraith quests before you head down at 44–47 and you'll finish them during your normal grind. Kerning citizenship details are in our citizenship guide.
Restock without losing your spot
NiaMeowDB counts 5 portals to the Kerning City Pharmacy for Line 2 <Area 1> and 6–7 for the Wraith maps. Dr. Faymus sells potions at launch prices: Red 50, Orange 150, White 350, Blue 220, and Warrior, Dexterity and Speed Potions at 500 each (NiaMeowDB).
| Habit | Why |
|---|---|
| Carry 300+ potions before you go to Area 4 or Area 3 | 6–7 portals each way is the longest restock walk in the 40s |
| Note your channel before leaving | Subway maps are crowded and you'll want the same spawn on your return |
| Sell drops on the way up | Our 45–50 meso guide prices Wraith drops; Medicine With Weird Vibes is most of their value |
Compare subway training with the alternatives
| Option | Levels | Strength | Weakness | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Line 2 <Area 1> | 31–38 | Single dominant target, 2.15M ceiling | Crowded | NiaMeowDB |
| The Burnt Land V (Perion) | 31–35 | planet-helper's first pick (17 at once, 1,024 per clear) | 8 portals to a shop | planet-helper; see our Burnt Land guide |
| Lorang maps (Florina) | 36–40 | 36 at once | Not undead, so no Holy bonus | planet-helper; see our Florina Beach guide |
| Monkey Forest / Forest of Evil (Ellinia) | 37–45 | Zombie Lupins are undead too | Long walk from Ellinia | Our Monkey Forest guide |
| Wraith maps | 46–55 | ~2,100–2,200 EXP per clear | 6–7 portals to potions | planet-helper, NiaMeowDB |
| Hot Sand (Florina) | 46–50 | planet-helper's top pick (22 at once, 2,562 per clear) | Fewer quest tie-ins | planet-helper |
| Party grinding in the subway | Any | Party EXP bonus | 18 monsters split among the party | Our party guide |
Alts, returning players and new Grand Launch players
- Returning players will find the layout they remember: Line 1, the Transfer Area and Line 2. The changes are the client avoid tweaks and the Classic-only quests, such as Silas Irons' crafting weekly and the citizenship Wraith quest (MSQ, NiaMeowDB).
- Alts should save the Wraith quests for when they're already grinding at 44–47. The 50-kill quests overlap, so one session can finish several.
- Players in their 40s should expect the Wraith maps to fill first, because the Founder's Access head start put many characters there at once. Have Line 1 <Area 3> as a fallback, or try the swamp maps in our Kerning Swamp guide.
- Brand-new accounts cannot trade until 24 hours after a character reaches level 15 (Nexon), so plan to sell subway drops to NPCs for the first day. The town itself is covered in our Kerning City guide.

What changed in the Kerning Subway at Grand Launch
Grand Launch (v1.0.0, October 21, 2026) left the subway's spawn points and monster stats as they were. These changes from Nexon's Grand Launch maintenance notes and release notes still affect a subway session:
| Change | What it means down here |
|---|---|
| Windia expanded to 40 channels | Crowded Wraith maps are easier to dodge by changing channel |
| More potion drops from monsters Lv 10–30 | Bubblings, Stirges and Jr. Neckis drop potions more often; Jr. Wraiths (Lv 34) and Wraiths do not get the boost |
| KPQ runs on channels 3–12 | Kerning City is busiest on those channels; the subway itself is not affected |
| Lie Detector Test (citizen shop) | A citizen can test a character that seems to be botting while it hunts; see our bots guide |
| New-account trade lock, and the Debt System from October 22 | New accounts trade only 24 hours after a character reaches Lv 15; accounts tied to real-money trading cannot trade or open shops until the debt is repaid |
Crafting still stops at craft level 8, and Orbis, El Nath and 3rd job remain closed, so the subway is still the main 30–55 route. From October 28 to November 18, every subway monster (all Lv 10+) can also drop Halloween Candies for Malady's event (Nexon). For the wider list of changes, see our launch changes guide. The MapleStory Classic hub lists every guide for the game.
FAQ
What level should I be for Wraiths in MapleStory Classic? About 46–55. Wraiths are Lv 48, have 2,350 HP and give 122 EXP. NiaMeowDB ranks the Wraith maps first for 46–50.
Which subway map is best for Jr. Wraiths? Line 2 <Area 1>. NiaMeowDB ranks it first for 31–35 with a 2.15M EXP/hr ceiling, and planet-helper lists it at 18 at once and 1,017 EXP per clear.
Are Wraiths weak to fire? Jr. Wraiths are weak to Fire and Holy. Adult Wraiths are weak only to Holy, according to MapleStory Quest's client data.
How much accuracy do I need for Wraiths? 104 at level 48, 125 at level 43 and 145 at level 38, according to NiaMeowDB. Below that you will miss some attacks.
How far is the subway from a potion shop? NiaMeowDB counts 5 portals from Line 2 <Area 1> to the Kerning City Pharmacy, and 6–7 from the Wraith maps.
Why does a 107-spawn-point map feel as full as a 59-point one? Subway maps cap at about 16–18 monsters at once (planet-helper). Extra spawn points add variety, not density.
What quests need Wraith kills? Jane's First Challenge and Jane's Second Challenge (level 44) and A Quiet Line of Work (level 47, citizenship). Each asks for 50 Wraiths (NiaMeowDB).
