THE GUIDE

Quick summary

  • The launch roster has 50 regular monsters and 6 bosses, from the Lv 1 Snail to the Lv 80 Jr. Balrog (MapleClassic Wiki). The fan databases list 173 to 275 entries because they include monsters that aren't in this build.
  • Use HP per EXP to compare monsters. Lower is better. Jr. Necki (7.0), Stirge (8.0) and Octopus (8.3) are the best regular monsters (our calculation from wiki stats, matching NiaMeowDB's rankings).
  • Skip Forgotten Hollow monsters for now. Glowshroom, Raffle, Rafflesia, Rotten Mushroom, Sporewood and five others are in NiaMeowDB, but Nexon's Founder's Access notes say the area hasn't been discovered yet.
  • Launch changed EXP for many mid-level monsters. Most Lv 31–62 monsters lost a few EXP from the COT2 test. Tauromacis and Taurospear gained a lot of both HP and EXP (NiaMeowDB change history).
  • Some names appear more than once. KPQ, second job test and GM event copies have different stats from the field monster.

Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.

Read a monster's stats

The wiki explains each stat this way (paraphrased):

Stat What it tells you
Level How much accuracy you need to hit it. The level gap between you and the monster also changes the EXP you get and the damage you take.
HP How much damage it takes to kill
EXP What a kill gives before the level-gap adjustment
HP per EXP Our calculation. Lower means faster EXP if your damage is the limit.
Weapon attack How hard it hits you
P.DEF / M.DEF How much it cuts physical or magic damage
ACC / AVOID How often it hits you, and how often it dodges you
Weak to The element that does extra damage. Magicians benefit most. See our elements guide.

Bosses always attack on sight, have far more HP and respawn on a timer. Most low-level monsters won't attack until you hit them (wiki).

To work out how much accuracy you need for a monster, see our accuracy guide. NiaMeowDB also lists "ACC to never miss" for your level on each monster page. For example, Bubbling needs 31 ACC at level 15 and 42 at level 5.

Pick the best monster for your level

Here are the three lowest HP-per-EXP regular monsters in each band. That's the best payoff if your damage is what limits you. Spawn counts, map layout and your accuracy matter just as much, so check our training guide before you settle on a map.

Level band Best HP/EXP (our calculation from wiki stats) Watch out for
1–10 Red Snail 8.5, Ribbon Pig 9.1, Orange Mushroom 9.5 Snails give little EXP per kill, so they're best right after Maple Island
11–20 Stirge 8.0, Octopus 8.3, Green Mushroom 9.0 NiaMeowDB lists Green Mushroom as immune to poison
21–30 Jr. Necki 7.0, Zombie Mushroom 9.7, Horny Mushroom 9.8 Iron Hog has 500 P.DEF on both databases, so it's a poor physical target
31–40 Fire Boar 14.0, Ligator 14.7, Jr. Wraith 14.9 Fairies have 500 M.DEF (wiki), so they're a poor magic target
41–50 Wraith 19.3, Zombie Lupin 19.9, Clang 22.8 NiaMeowDB says Wraith regenerates 50 HP per tick
51–62 Malady 18.0, Croco 21.5, Wild Kargo 21.9 Malady is weak to Holy, so it suits Clerics
70–75 Tauromacis 27.7, Taurospear 29.2 Both have a Lightning magic attack and are weak to Ice (NiaMeowDB)

Example: a level 22 Thief's choice is Jr. Necki at 272 HP for 39 EXP, or Horny Mushroom at 403 HP for 41 EXP. That's about 45% more HP for 5% more EXP, so Jr. Necki pays better per hit as long as you can reach the Dangerous Croko maps.

Know what changed at launch

NiaMeowDB's change history compares each monster's COT2 test values with the launch build:

Change Monsters (NiaMeowDB) What it means
A little less EXP at launch Ligator 59 → 58, Curse Eye 66 → 63, Jr. Boogie 74 → 69, Lupin 82 → 75, Cold Eye 94 → 85, Zombie Lupin 99 → 89, Copper Drake 117 → 107, Croco 155 → 146, Stone Golem 183 → 175 Older EXP-per-hour numbers from the test overstate these maps a little
More EXP and HP Tauromacis EXP 300 → 337 and HP 5,610 → 9,328 (test 2 to launch). Taurospear EXP 350 → 429 and HP 6,258 → 12,535. They pay more per kill but take about twice as long to kill
Boss retuning Mano's attack went from 101 to 252 between tests. Jr. Balrog's HP went from 138,840 to 325,400. Old boss guides underestimate both
Small accuracy and knockback tweaks Most monsters under level 30 Small changes to how often they hit you

Decode monsters with the same name

Variant (NiaMeowDB) Level Stats compared with the field version Where
Ligator (KPQ) 21 778 HP, 68 EXP (field: Lv 31, 853 HP, 58 EXP) KPQ first stage
Jr. Necki (KPQ) 25 765 HP, 80 EXP KPQ last stage
Curse Eye (KPQ) 29 1,186 HP, 94 EXP KPQ last stage
King Slime (KPQ boss) 32 16,820 HP, 2,400 EXP; revives as 11 Slimes KPQ final stage
Second job test copies 30 718–789 HP, 56 EXP (Evil Eye, Zombie Mushroom, Curse Eye, Horny Mushroom, Cold Eye, Blue Mushroom, Fire Boar, Lupin) Job advancement test maps
GM event bosses Same as field Same HP; avoid 4. King Slime gives 240 EXP. Only during GM events

The KPQ stages are in our KPQ guide. The field bosses (Mano, Mushmom, Shade, Zombie Mushmom, Jr. Balrog) are in our bosses guide.

Flag monsters that aren't in the launch build

  • Forgotten Hollow: Glowshroom (Lv 39), Raffle (40), Golden Stirge (42), Aqumander (43), Echopus (45), Rafflesia (47), Duskmander (50), Myewood (54), Rotten Mushroom (56) and Sporewood (59). NiaMeowDB lists them on Shallow and Deep Passage maps. Nexon's Founder's Access notes say Forgotten Hollow "hasn't been discovered yet," and the wiki's launch roster leaves them out.
  • Rotten Mushmom (Lv 60 boss) and Crimson Balrog (Lv 100) are on NiaMeowDB but not in the wiki's launch roster. NiaMeowDB gives Crimson Balrog no map, though it describes the boss as appearing on the ship to Orbis.
  • Monsters from other regions, such as Trixter, Jr.

Choose a database for drops and maps

Database Count it shows Strengths Limits
MapleClassic Wiki 56 in the launch table, plus tutorial and test monsters Launch-only roster, every stat in one table Sorts by column, but few maps per row
NiaMeowDB 184 (rank lines such as "#171 of 184") Maps with spawn counts and respawn timers, launch changes, accuracy targets Includes Forgotten Hollow and variants
MSCW Guidebook 178 Quick level, HP and EXP list Includes Ossyria monsters
planet-helper 183 Drops and hunting maps Same over-count
henesys.gg 275 Built from launch client data, with a Boss/Undead filter Includes entries it marks "not in Classic World"

Drop lists aren't final yet. NiaMeowDB marks its MS Classic drops as community-sourced, with player votes. It also shows a separate MSEA reference list from old MapleSEA tables, which it calls historical reference only. henesys.gg only shows a player-reported drop once three players confirm it. Treat drop rates you see quoted as unverified.

If you're returning, on an alt, or leveling fast

  • Played old Victoria Island? Most monster names and maps match, but stats were retuned at launch. Use the launch table, not old MapleSEA or GMS numbers.
  • Leveling an alt? Use the band table to pick monsters, and the EXP table to see how many kills a level takes.
  • Short on time? Our MapleStory Classic hub and powerleveling page list FullBoosts' service categories. Check the rules below first.

What may change at Grand Launch

This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.

FAQ

How many monsters are in MapleStory Classic at launch?

The MapleClassic Wiki's launch table has 50 regular monsters and 6 bosses, plus tutorial and invincible test monsters. Fan databases list 173 to 275 because they include monsters that aren't in this build.

Which monster gives the best EXP for its HP?

Among regular field monsters, Jr. Necki has the lowest HP per EXP at 7.0 (272 HP, 39 EXP). Next are Stirge at 8.0 and Octopus at 8.3 (our calculation from wiki stats).

What is the highest-level monster at launch?

The Lv 80 Jr. Balrog boss. The highest regular monster is the Lv 75 Taurospear (wiki).

Are Forgotten Hollow monsters in the game?

Not yet. Nexon's Founder's Access notes say Forgotten Hollow hasn't been discovered, and the wiki leaves its monsters out of the launch roster.

Why are there two King Slimes?

The KPQ boss gives 2,400 EXP. A GM event copy gives 240 EXP (NiaMeowDB).

Are monster drop lists accurate?

Not fully. NiaMeowDB's drops are community-sourced, and its MSEA list is historical. henesys.gg needs three player reports before showing a drop.

Did monster stats change at launch?

Yes. Most Lv 31–62 monsters give slightly less EXP than in the COT2 test. Tauromacis and Taurospear give more EXP and have more HP.
