MapleStory Classic Launch Changes: EXP, Spawns, Maps to v1.0.0
MapleStory Classic launch changes from the closed test to v1.0.0: monster EXP cuts, boss EXP, spawn rates, Sleepywood nerf, Excavation Site and Stumpy.

In this guide 13 sections
Checked against v1.0.0 on October 29, 2026.
If you planned your route during Closed Online Test 2 (CoT2), some of those numbers are now wrong. The Public Release client of October 6 changed monster EXP, map spawn rates, quest rewards and a few weapons, and it dropped whole regions. Grand Launch (v1.0.0, October 21) and the October 8, 15 and 22 maintenances then added maps, a boss and spawn fixes. This MapleStory Classic launch changes guide covers every change outside the skill tree, in date order, and what it means for where you train. Our skill changes guide covers skills.
Quick summary
- Most mid-level monsters give a little less EXP. 40 of the 62 revised monsters lost EXP and 7 gained it (MapleStory Quest). Wraith went from 132 to 122 and Lorang from 86 to 78.
- Bosses pay much more. King Slime went from 248 to 2,400 EXP, Jr. Balrog from 1,612 to 2,188, and Crimson Balrog from 2,652 to 6,000 (MapleStory Quest).
- 103 maps changed their mob rate: 65 down and 38 up (MapleStory Quest). Golem's Temple and Rocky Mountain went up. Pig Beach, Utah's Pig Farm and the Kerning subway went down.
- Ossyria and most of Forgotten Hollow are gone for now: 127 maps, 97 monsters and 59 quests (MapleStory Quest). Forgotten Hollow opens in November (Nexon).
- Later patches reshaped spawns again: Grand Launch v1.0.0 added the Excavation Site (Lv 19–73 monsters), the field boss Stumpy (Lv 35) and The Murky Swamp II (Nexon). The October 15 patch cut Sleepy Dungeon V from 31 to 20 monsters at once (henesys.gg).
What changed at Grand Launch: v1.0.0 monsters, spawns and maps
Nexon's Grand Launch maintenance notes and release notes list these world changes for v1.0.0 on October 21, 2026. Monster levels come from henesys.gg's patch notes.
| Change | Detail | Where it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Excavation Site (new area off Perion) | Ghost Stump (Lv 19), Wooden Mask (Lv 23) and Rocky Mask (Lv 24) in Excavation Site I–III; Skeledog (44), Mummydog (47), Skeleton Soldier (57), Officer Skeleton (63) and Commander Skeleton (73) in the Remains and camps | A new 40s–70s option; see our Excavation Site guide |
| Stumpy (new field boss, Lv 35) | Spawns in Parched Land past East Rocky Mountain; Doctor Winston's quest chain leads to it | Challenge boss list is now Mano, Stumpy, Mushmom, Shade, Zombie Mushmom and Jr. Balrog; see our Stumpy guide |
| The Murky Swamp II | A second Ligator and Jr. Necki map near Kerning City, leading to Shade's cabin | See our Kerning Swamp guide |
| Potion drops | Higher potion drop rate for monsters Lv 10–30 | Cheaper leveling through the 20s |
| Field boss respawns | Respawn times are more randomized | Boss camping on a fixed timer no longer works |
| Stagger fix | Copper Drake, Tortie, Drake, Red Drake and Wild Kargo now need the intended minimum damage to stagger | These monsters flinch less from weak hits |
| New drops and quests | Drop items added for some Victoria Island monsters; new quests such as Pia's Old Snail chain (Lv 20) and Truth of the Rumor (Lv 34) | Check NiaMeowDB monster pages for the new rows |
| 40 channels, Free Market rooms 12–20 | Windia expanded; KPQ runs on channels 3–12 | Crowded maps are easier to dodge |
| Murky Swamp and Sleepy Dungeon II fixes | A rope in The Murky Swamp can be climbed; monsters no longer walk off-screen at the edges of Sleepy Dungeon II | Fewer stuck mobs |
The October 22 maintenance added the Debt System for accounts tied to real-money trading; it did not change monsters or maps (Nexon). From October 28 to November 18, Orange Slimes (Lv 20), which had no spawn map in the launch data, appear in Henesys, Ellinia, Kerning City and Perion for the Halloween event (Nexon); see our Halloween event guide.

The Sleepywood cut is the largest spawn change since launch. If you planned to train Drakes or Sleepy Dungeon monsters, our Sleepywood guide has the current maps, and the Ledger quest is in our Caretaker's Ledger guide. Nexon's October 15 maintenance notes list the rest.
Check which monsters lost EXP
MapleStory Quest lists 62 revised monsters. Many are Forgotten Hollow monsters that have no live map now, so we list only the ones you can hunt at launch. "Extra kills" is our math: the old EXP divided by the new EXP, which is how many more kills the same EXP now takes.
| Monster | Level | CoT2 EXP | Launch EXP | Change | Extra kills (ours) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ligator | 31 | 59 | 58 | −1.7% | +2% |
| Fire Boar | 32 | 62 | 60 | −3.2% | +3% |
| Curse Eye | 33 | 66 | 63 | −4.5% | +5% |
| Jr. Wraith | 34 | 70 | 66 | −5.7% | +6% |
| Jr. Boogie | 35 | 74 | 69 | −6.8% | +7% |
| Lupin | 37 | 82 | 75 | −8.5% | +9% |
| Lorang | 38 | 86 | 78 | −9.3% | +10% |
| Cold Eye | 40 | 94 | 85 | −9.6% | +11% |
| Zombie Lupin | 41 | 99 | 89 | −10.1% | +11% |
| Copper Drake | 45 | 117 | 107 | −8.5% | +9% |
| Tortie | 46 | 122 | 111 | −9.0% | +10% |
| Wraith | 48 | 132 | 122 | −7.6% | +8% |
| Clang | 49 | 137 | 127 | −7.3% | +8% |
| Drake | 50 | 142 | 133 | −6.3% | +7% |
| Croco | 52 | 155 | 146 | −5.8% | +6% |
| Malady | 55 | 175 | 167 | −4.6% | +5% |
| Stone Golem | 56 | 183 | 175 | −4.4% | +5% |
| Dark Stone Golem | 58 | 197 | 192 | −2.5% | +3% |
| Red Drake | 60 | 213 | 211 | −0.9% | +1% |
Almost all of these also gained 1 or 2 Avoidability, so you miss a little more (MapleStory Quest). The cuts are biggest from level 37 to 46, where Lupin, Lorang, Cold Eye, Zombie Lupin and Tortie each lost 8% to 10%. Monster EXP for levels 1 to 30 is almost untouched. Green Mushroom only lost its Undead flag and a little knockback resistance, so a Cleric's Heal no longer damages it.
See the monsters that gained EXP
| Monster | Level | CoT2 EXP | Launch EXP | Change |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wild Kargo | 62 | 229 | 231 | +0.9% |
| Tauromacis | 70 | 300 | 337 | +12.3% |
| Taurospear | 75 | 350 | 429 | +22.6% |
The top end gained. Taurospear now gives about 18% fewer kills per level than in CoT2, by our math. Our monster list has every launch monster with HP and EXP.
Recheck boss EXP and stats
| Boss | Level | What changed (CoT2 → launch) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| King Slime | 32 | EXP 248 → 2,400; physical and magic attack 391 → 288 | MapleStory Quest |
| Mushmom | 40 | EXP 376 → 340; Avoidability 24 → 29; now weak to Fire | MapleStory Quest |
| Zombie Mushmom | 55 (was 50) | HP 53,640 → 66,640; EXP 568 → 668; attack up about 9% | MapleStory Quest |
| Rotten Mushmom | 60 | EXP 852 → 844; Avoidability 34 → 39 | MapleStory Quest |
| Jr. Balrog | 80 | EXP 1,612 → 2,188; Avoidability 43 → 49 | MapleStory Quest |
| Crimson Balrog | 100 | EXP 2,652 → 6,000 | MapleStory Quest |
| Mano | 20 | Avoidability 9 → 13 | MapleStory Quest |
| Shade | 48 | New boss in the Cabin of the Forsaken | MapleStory Quest |
King Slime's change matters most. It's the final stage of the Kerning Party Quest, and the boss is now worth almost ten times as much EXP while hitting about a quarter less hard. See our KPQ guide. The Crimson Balrog change is client data only: NiaMeowDB lists no map where it spawns; our Jr. Balrog guide covers the Balrog you can fight now. Shade has its own boss guide.
Find the maps that got busier or emptier
Each map has a mob rate, a multiplier in the map file. MapleStory Quest's capacity formula, which it credits to the OSMS data explorer, multiplies the map's floor area by the mob rate, divides by 128,000 and caps the result at 40 monsters for one player. NiaMeowDB's spawn model also multiplies capacity by mob rate; it fills 75% of a map's spawn points for one player, adds 5% per extra player and reaches 100% with six. The release changed the mob rate on 103 maps.
We applied that formula to the release floor sizes MapleStory Quest publishes, once with the CoT2 mob rate and once with the launch rate. That's our estimate. It assumes the floors didn't change between the builds, and MapleStory Quest says 95 maps did gain spawn points.
Maps that lost the most capacity
| Map | Mob rate (CoT2 → launch) | Holds, CoT2 (our estimate) | Holds, launch (MapleStory Quest) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Utah's Pig Farm | ×1.6 → ×1.0 | 40 | 27 |
| A Split Road (Maple Island) | ×1.5 → ×1.0 | 26 | 17 |
| The Pig Beach | ×1.5 → ×1.0 | 26 | 17 |
| The Forest of Wisdom | ×1.0 → ×0.8 | 39 | 31 |
| Transfer Area (Kerning subway) | ×1.0 → ×0.7 | 23 | 16 |
| Kerning City Construction Site | ×1.0 → ×0.7 | 40 | 34 |
| Construction Site North of Kerning City | ×1.2 → ×1.0 | 40 | 34 |
| The Forest East of Henesys | ×1.0 → ×0.6 | 40 | 35 |
| The Hill East of Henesys | ×1.5 → ×1.2 | 28 | 23 |
| Kerning subway Line 1 and Line 2 areas | ×1.0–1.1 → ×0.9 | 19–22 | 17–18 |
Maps that gained the most capacity
| Map | Mob rate (CoT2 → launch) | Holds, CoT2 (our estimate) | Holds, launch (MapleStory Quest) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Golem's Temple I to IV | ×0.5–0.6 → ×1.3–1.5 | 3–4 | 9–10 |
| The Entrance of Golem's Temple | ×0.7 → ×1.5 | 4 | 10 |
| West Rocky Mountain II | ×0.6 → ×1.0 | 11 | 19 |
| West Rocky Mountain IV | ×0.6 → ×1.0 | 11 | 18 |
| East Rocky Mountain VI | ×0.8 → ×1.6 | 6 | 13 |
| Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North VII | ×0.4 → ×0.9 | 5 | 12 |
| Dangerous Valley II | ×0.6 → ×1.0 | 10 | 17 |
| The Burnt Land I | ×0.6 → ×0.8 | 13 | 18 |
| Over the Wall | ×1.0 → ×1.5 | 9 | 14 |
A cut doesn't always matter. L Forest III, 3-Way Road-Split, East Domain of Perion and The Forest North of Ellinia all lost mob rate, but they're big enough to hit the 40 cap either way. By our estimate, the 97 changed maps we could match held about 2,100 monsters in CoT2 and 2,032 now, a drop of about 3%. The one large number on the list means nothing: The Tree Tunnel at the Forest Up North went from ×10 to ×1, but it has no monsters.
The pattern looks deliberate. Beginner and low-level maps around Henesys, Kerning City and Maple Island were thinned. Mid-level Perion and the Golem's Temple maps were filled out. Our Golem's Temple guide covers those maps.
Compare training picks after the changes
| Pick | CoT2 picture | Launch picture | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pig Beach / Utah's Pig Farm (low levels) | Busy, mob rate ×1.5–1.6 | About a third fewer monsters (our estimate) | Still fine for a while, but crowds hurt more |
| Kerning subway Lines 1–2 | 19–22 monsters | 17–18 monsters; Wraith and Jr. Wraith EXP down 6–8% | Weaker. Compare with Florina Beach; see our Kerning Subway guide |
| Golem's Temple (Stone Golem, Lv 56) | 3–4 monsters per map | 9–10 per map; Stone Golem EXP down 4% | Much better if the mob-rate formula holds |
| Rocky Mountain / Burnt Land (Perion) | Sparse | Nearly double the monsters on some maps (our estimate) | Better for 30s and 40s |
| King Slime in KPQ | 248 EXP for the boss | 2,400 EXP | Finishing a full run is worth much more |
| Taurospear / Tauromacis (70–75) | 350 / 300 EXP | 429 / 337 EXP | Top-end grind improved |
The capacity rows are community models, not Nexon figures, so count the monsters on a map yourself before you commit to it. Our training guide has full level-by-level spots, and our party grinding guide covers how more players add spawns.
Note what was removed and added
| Change | Count | Details | Source |

| Monsters removed | 97 | 40 that spawned only in Ossyria and 57 that the test carried with no map to spawn on | MapleStory Quest |
| Quests removed | 59 | 43 in El Nath, 15 that lead into and through Forgotten Hollow, 1 in Orbis | MapleStory Quest |
| Skills removed | 70 | All 3rd job skills, 7 for each of the 10 classes | MapleStory Quest |
| Maps added | 6 | Backalley Semi-Basement, Cabin of the Forsaken, The Circulation Desk, The Hermit's Cabin, The Murky Swamp, a Yellow Mushroom House | MapleStory Quest |
| Monsters added | 2 | Shade (Lv 48 boss) and Orange Slime (Lv 20, 1,855 HP, 64 EXP, no spawn map in the data) | MapleStory Quest |
| Quests added | 53 | 35 Citizenship requests, 12 event quests, 6 Ellinia quests | MapleStory Quest |
| Items added | 309 | 203 chairs and furniture, 75 consumables, 27 Etc items, 4 equipment pieces | MapleStory Quest |
Ossyria and 3rd job weren't cut for good. MapleStory Quest describes them as held back for later, and our roadmap guide tracks the dates. The Murky Swamp is a new Ligator and Jr. Necki map that holds 18 monsters (MapleStory Quest); Grand Launch added a second one. Our Forgotten Hollow guide covers what's left of that area.
Quest rewards went up
Of the revised quests, 187 EXP rewards rose and 59 fell, and 213 of 218 meso rewards rose (MapleStory Quest). John's three Deep Forest of Patience quests also moved from level 45 to 65 (NiaMeowDB). Our quests guide uses launch rewards.
Recheck daggers and other gear
| Item | Change (CoT2 → launch) | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Triple-Tipped Zamadar, Bazlud, Stinger | Thief only → Warrior/Thief; speed Fast (4) → Faster (3); 1 attack lower | MapleStory Quest |
| Iron Dagger, Coconut Knife | Warrior/Thief → Thief only; speed Faster (3) → Fast (4); Coconut Knife +3 attack | MapleStory Quest |
| Cass, Sai, Serpent's Coil, Golden River | +2 attack each | MapleStory Quest |
| Henesys and Kerning City Earrings | Now +7 MP | MapleStory Quest |
| Greater and Chaos weapon attack scrolls | +3/+4 → +4/+5 (magic: +6/+8 → +8/+10); success rates unchanged | MapleStory Quest, NiaMeowDB |
| Lesser cape, earring and glove scroll recipes | Fee 10,000 → 20,000 mesos (in Founder's Access, not v1.0.0) | MapleStory Quest, henesys.gg |
The dagger swap matters if you planned a Thief around the Stinger or a Warrior around the Iron Dagger. Our daggers guide uses launch values. Two item ids also changed meaning: the old Hired Merchant Box and Atmospheric Effect Box ids now hold MapleStory Fest gift boxes (MapleStory Quest).
Plan for alts and returning players
- Tested in CoT2? Throw out any EXP-per-hour figures for levels 37 to 50. They're 5% to 10% too high. Bosses and the 70s are the exception.
- Returning from old GMS? Ossyria, Orbis, El Nath and 3rd job aren't in this release. Victoria Island and Jr. Balrog are the top end for now.
- Leveling an alt? If mob rate counts, low-level maps are emptier than they were in the test. Finish Maple Island quests instead of over-grinding A Split Road, which lost a third of its capacity by our estimate.
- Planning a Thief or Warrior dagger build? Recheck which daggers your job can equip. Five of them switched.
- Using an older guide or planner? Metaroad said on October 8 that its own item, monster and skill pages still showed test values. Check the "updated" date against October 6, and against October 21 for the Excavation Site and Stumpy.
- Coming back after Founder's Access? Characters carried over with no wipe (henesys.gg), so your level is intact, but recheck Sleepywood and the new Perion maps before you return to an old spot.
- Short on time? Our MapleStory Classic hub covers the options.

FAQ
Did monsters give less EXP at launch than in the closed test? Most of the mid-level ones did. 40 of the 62 revised monsters lost EXP, usually 5% to 10% from level 37 to 50 (MapleStory Quest). Seven gained, including King Slime, Jr. Balrog, Tauromacis and Taurospear.
How much EXP does King Slime give now? 2,400 EXP, up from 248 in CoT2. Its attack dropped from 391 to 288 (MapleStory Quest).
Which maps have more monsters at launch? Golem's Temple, parts of East and West Rocky Mountain, The Burnt Land and Dangerous Valley II all had their mob rate raised. Under MapleStory Quest's formula, Golem's Temple maps went from 3–4 monsters to 9–10 (our estimate for CoT2).
Does mob rate actually affect spawns in MapleStory Classic? Both community databases treat it as a multiplier on how many monsters a map holds. Nexon doesn't publish the formula, so count the monsters on a map yourself to check.
What did Grand Launch v1.0.0 change for training? It added the Excavation Site, the Stumpy field boss and The Murky Swamp II, raised potion drops for Lv 10–30 monsters, randomized field boss respawns and fixed the stagger threshold on Drakes, Tortie and Wild Kargo (Nexon).
Why are there fewer monsters in Sleepy Dungeon? The October 15 maintenance cut Sleepy Dungeon V from 31 to 20 monsters at once and lowered Sleepy Dungeons I–III too (henesys.gg).
Where did Ossyria and 3rd job go? They aren't in the Public Release client. MapleStory Quest lists 92 Ossyria maps and all 70 3rd job skills as removed, and describes them as held back for later. Our roadmap guide tracks Nexon's dates.
What's new on the map at launch? Founder's Access added six maps, including Cabin of the Forsaken (Shade's boss room), The Circulation Desk and The Murky Swamp (MapleStory Quest). Grand Launch added the Excavation Site, Parched Land's Stumpy spawn and The Murky Swamp II (Nexon).
Did any weapons change jobs? Yes. Triple-Tipped Zamadar, Bazlud and Stinger are now Warrior/Thief daggers and got faster. Iron Dagger and Coconut Knife became Thief only and got slower (MapleStory Quest).
