MapleStory Classic World has 16 ores. Seven are metal ores that Smithing smelts into ingots, and nine are gem ores that Arcforge refines into jewels. Nearly every craft needs them, ingots alone feed 164 recipes, and no recorded NPC shop sells raw ore. This MapleStory Classic ore guide covers where each ore drops, what it turns into, what an NPC pays, which quests and events hand ore out after Grand Launch, and where to farm several at once.
Quick summary
- Metal ores take 5 per ingot; gem ores take 1 per gem. Every refine charges a fee equal to the product's NPC price, so vendoring a refined ingot or gem only returns the fee (MapleStory Quest client data).
- Black Crystal Ore is the most valuable: 500 mesos raw, and its gem sells for 2,500 against a 1,200 fee.
- Drop rates are low. The wiki's pre-launch rates run from about 1 in 23 (Aquamarine Ore from Octopus) to about 1 in 620 (Emerald Ore from Green Mushroom).
- Rowen the Fairy's Cursed Doll chain in Ellinia pays 7 metal ores, then 10 gem ores, then 5 Gold or Diamond Ore, all from Zombie Lupins at level 36 (wiki). GM event Magic Boxes can pay 10 to 15 of a single ore (Nexon).
- Ore demand is uneven. Planet-helper's routes to craft level 8 use about 1,165 Iron Ore for Weaponcrafting, but only 153 Diamond plus 53 Amethyst Ore for Arcforge.

Iron Ingot's 40 includes the Screw recipe, and every Weaponcrafting, Leatherworking and Tailoring chain needs Screws (Weaponcrafting guide).

Gems go into Arcforge scrolls and wands, and into colored shoes, gloves and robes for Leatherworking and Tailoring. Our shoes guide and shields guide show which gems their Arcforge scrolls take. Garnet alone is used in 35 recipes (MapleStory Quest).
Decide whether to refine or sell
| Choice | What you get back | Our math, per refine |
|---|---|---|
| Vendor 5 Mithril Ore | 200 mesos | — |
| Smelt to a Mithril Ingot, then vendor it | 200 back on a 200 fee | You've traded 200 mesos of ore for 6 Smithing EXP |
| Vendor 1 Black Crystal Ore | 500 | — |
| Refine to Black Crystal, then vendor it | 2,500 on a 1,200 fee | +800 mesos over vendoring the ore |
| Vendor 1 Diamond Ore | 240 | — |
| Refine to Diamond, then vendor it | 1,200 on a 1,200 fee | −240 (you've traded the ore for 18 Arcforge EXP) |
Rule of thumb (our math): Black Crystal is the only refine that earns mesos at an NPC. Everything else is worth refining only for craft EXP or as an input. Ores are worth far more to crafters than an NPC pays, so check player prices first. Our Free Market guide covers trading.
Collect ore from quests
| Quest | Giver | Level | Task | Ore reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How to Enjoy Mushrooms Even More | Shane (Ellinia) | 14 | 30 Green Mushrooms, 15 Green Mushroom Caps, Lemon | 5 Iron Ore |
| Collecting 50 Cursed Dolls | Rowen the Fairy (Ellinia) | 36 | 50 Zombie Lupins, 50 Cursed Dolls | 7 of one: Bronze, Iron, Mithril, Adamantium, Silver or Orihalcon Ore (17% each) |
| Collecting 70 Cursed Dolls | Rowen the Fairy | 36 | 70 Zombie Lupins, 70 Cursed Dolls | 10 of one: Garnet, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Emerald, Opal, Sapphire or Topaz Ore (14% each) |
| Collecting 100 Cursed Dolls | Rowen the Fairy | 36 | 100 Zombie Lupins, 100 Cursed Dolls | 5 Gold Ore or 5 Diamond Ore (50% each) |
Rowen's chain only opens after the Sauna Robe quest line; our Sauna Robe quest guide covers both.
Get ore from party quests and GM events
Two non-quest sources changed at Grand Launch:
| Source | How | Ore | Source cited |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kerning City Party Quest | Each member gets a Companion's Magic Box on a clear (level 21+) | Gem and Black Crystal ores, in smaller amounts since v1.0.0; the box can also drop the Lakelis Statue decoration | Nexon's Grand Launch maintenance notice |
| GM events (Scroll of Secrets → Magic Box) | Win an event, take the Scroll of Secrets to Chun Ji, open the box at Mr. Pickall in Kerning City | One random reward, which can be 10 Gold, Diamond or Black Crystal Ore, or 15 of any other ore | Nexon's Grand Launch release notes |
Nexon didn't publish the KPQ box's exact ore amounts before or after the cut. The next GM event is the Coconut Harvest on November 6 at 00:00 UTC (Nexon). Our KPQ guide covers the party quest.
Farm several ores at once
The monsters below drop two or more ores (the wiki's rates, plus MapleStory Quest's older-table listings).
| Monster (level) | Ores | Bonus drops for crafters |
|---|---|---|
| Blue Snail (2) | Iron about 1/35, Amethyst; Silver and Opal (older tables) | — |
| Red Snail (4) | Silver about 1/45, Opal about 1/91 | — |
| Stump (5) | Bronze about 1/41, Emerald about 1/207; Adamantium (older tables) | Tree Branches; potion drops raised at Grand Launch for monsters level 10–30 |
| Slime (6) | Orihalcon about 1/51, Sapphire about 1/385 | — |
| Pig (7) | Gold about 1/83, Topaz about 1/249 | Leather |
| Green Mushroom (14) | Silver about 1/124, Emerald about 1/620; Orihalcon (older tables) | Fragment of Magic about 1/124 |
| Horny Mushroom (22) | Bronze about 1/42, Topaz about 1/317 | — |
| Fire Boar (32) | Garnet and Diamond (older tables) | Leather; East Rocky Mountain V–VII in our Rocky Mountain guide |
| Croco (52) | Bronze, Opal and Diamond (older tables) | — |
Our pick for a first ore session (our assessment): Blue Snails and Red Snails for Iron, Silver and Opal, then Stumps for Bronze. Those four cover the first Smithing ingots and Screws. Map locations and spawn counts are in our training guide and monster list.
Expected kills (our math, wiki rates): 10 Iron Ingots need 50 Iron Ore, about 1,750 Blue Snail kills at 1 in 35. One Sapphire Staff needs 2 Sapphires, about 770 Slime kills at 1 in 385. Plan crafts around the ores you can farm quickly.
See how much ore each craft needs
| Craft | Main materials to craft level 8 (planet-helper) |
|---|---|
| Smithing | 300 Orihalcon Ore, 220 Mithril Ore |
| Weaponcrafting | 1,165 Iron Ore |
| Leatherworking | 1,050 Leather, 92 Garnet Ore |
| Arcforge | 153 Diamond Ore, 53 Amethyst Ore |
| Tailoring | 1,463 Animal Fur Bundles (no ore) |
| Woodcrafting | 1,150 Firewood, 500 Tree Branches (no ore) |
Planet-helper's figures are for its fewest-materials routes. Our own routes are in each crafting guide; the Smithing guide prices two ore-based routes to craft 8. Starting crafts are compared in the crafting guide.
For alts and returning players
- Returning from original MapleStory: gems take 1 ore here, not 10, and Lesser scrolls are 100%. That changes the ore math for every Arcforge plan (MapleStory Quest).
- Ore mules: ore stacks in your Etc inventory. Store it before a long farming session (inventory guide).
- Alt quest ore: Shane's Iron Ore quest and Rowen's first three doll quests can each be done once per character, so an alt can collect them again (wiki).
- Funding a new alt: refining Black Crystal pays 1,300 mesos over the fee. More income ideas are in the mesos guide.
- New accounts: you can't trade until 24 hours after a character reaches level 15, so a fresh alt account can't buy ore from players on day one (Nexon).

What changed for ore at Grand Launch
Grand Launch (v1.0.0, October 21, 2026) didn't change any ore price or refining recipe. It changed where ore comes from:
| Change | Effect |
|---|---|
| KPQ's Companion's Magic Box gives less Garnet, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Emerald, Opal, Sapphire, Topaz, Diamond and Black Crystal Ore | KPQ is a smaller gem source than in Founder's Access (Nexon) |
| GM event Magic Box rewards include 10–15 of a single ore | A random new source of Diamond and Black Crystal Ore (Nexon) |
| New drops for some Victoria Island monsters | Nexon didn't list them; check NiaMeowDB's item pages for live reports |
| Crafting still stops at craft level 8 | Ore demand is capped at the level 8 recipes |
| Debt System (October 22) and new-account trade lock | Ore bought for real money can be clawed back as debt, and new accounts can't trade at first (Nexon) |
Our patch notes tracker lists every other change, and the MapleStory Classic hub collects every guide for the game.
FAQ
Where does Mithril Ore drop in MapleStory Classic? The wiki lists Ribbon Pigs at about 1 in 40. MapleStory Quest's older tables add Shrooms, Bubblings, Jr. Neckis, Zombie Mushrooms, Ligators and Torties.
How many ores make an ingot or a gem? Five for an ingot, one for a gem, unlike the 10 per gem in original MapleStory. Each refine also charges a fee equal to the product's NPC price (MapleStory Quest).
Can I buy ore from an NPC? No recorded shop sells raw ore. Your options are drops, quests like Rowen's Cursed Doll chain, KPQ and GM event boxes, and other players. Don't sell ore to NPCs either: they pay only 20 to 500 per ore, and crafters need far more than drops supply.
What is the most valuable ore? Black Crystal Ore. An NPC pays 500 for it, and its refined gem sells for 2,500 (MapleStory Quest).
Where do I get Diamond Ore in MapleStory Classic? From "Collecting 100 Cursed Dolls" (a 50% chance at 5), GM event Magic Boxes (a chance at 10), KPQ boxes in small amounts, or from Drakes, Crocos, Fire Boars and Red Drakes in MapleStory Quest's older tables.
