MapleStory Classic Thief Guide 1–30: Claw vs Dagger, Skill Build
MapleStory Classic Thief guide, Lv 1-30: Lucky Seven vs Double Stab, the Sindit plan for Bandits, SP orders, LUK/DEX AP, claws and stars.

In this guide 16 sections
Quick summary
- Advance at level 10 with the Dark Lord beneath the Fusion Jazz Bar in Kerning City. There's no quest and no stat requirement (the wiki, NiaMeowDB).
- Level with Lucky Seven and a claw, even if you plan to be a Bandit. NiaMeowDB calls it "the clear level 10-30 skill for both future Assassins and Bandits." Bandits who level this way are called Sindits.
- AP: all LUK through level 10 (57 LUK), then add DEX only when your next claw needs it: 15, 20, 25, and 30 base DEX at levels 15, 20, 25, and 30 (NiaMeowDB).
- Max Lucky Seven by level 18, then Keen Eyes (400 px total throwing range), then Nimble Body. Both main guides agree on this endpoint (NiaMeowDB, planet-helper).
- A stack of 500 stars is 250 Lucky Seven casts and 4,000 MP, so carry several stacks.
Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.
Level 1–10 as a Beginner
- NiaMeowDB recommends the Club through level 4 and the Razor from level 5. Beginner SP goes to Three Snails 3, Recovery 3, and Nimble Feet 3.
- Starting stats: 4 STR / 5 DEX / 4 INT / 12 LUK. Put every AP point into LUK, giving 57 LUK at level 10 (NiaMeowDB).
- The wiki notes that Maple Island's Red Snails already drop Thief gear: Red Cloth Pants (male, Lv 10) and Brown Duo gloves (Lv 15).
Advance in Kerning City
Talk to the Dark Lord (the wiki). Then equip the Beginner's Garnier claw with Subi Throwing-Stars. Dr. Faymus sells Subis, and Don Hwang sells the level 10 Thief armor (NiaMeowDB). At level 12, NiaMeowDB recommends Kerning City citizenship. At level 22, the Helpful Stranger rank (3,500 contribution) lets Max sell Wolbi Throwing-Stars (+17 weapon attack) for 1,000 mesos. Details are in our citizenship guide.
Know your six first-job skills
| Skill | Max | Lv 1 → max (launch data, planet-helper) |
|---|---|---|
| Lucky Seven | 20 | 60% → 140%, 2 stars, MP 8 → 16; damage from LUK |
| Double Stab | 20 | 80% → 160%, 2 stabs, MP 8 → 16 |
| Nimble Body | 15 | Accuracy and Avoidability +1 → +15 |
| Keen Eyes | 15 (needs NB 3) | Throwing range +50 → +200 |
| Disorder | 20 | Enemy attack −5 → −25, Weapon DEF −1 → −5 |
| Dark Sight | 20 (needs Disorder 3) | Hide; Speed −20 → normal; can't attack while hidden |
planet-helper notes that Double Stab was 130% at max in the original game, so it's stronger in Classic, though it marks that "unconfirmed until launch." The wiki adds that Disorder "stops it from targeting you." Only the wiki claims this.
Choose your path: Assassin, Sindit, or true dagger
| Path | First-job endpoint | Trade-off (sources) |
|---|---|---|
| Assassin (claw) | L7 20, KE 15, NB 15, Dis 3, DS 8 | The direct ranged path (NiaMeowDB, planet-helper) |
| Sindit (claw → Bandit) | Same as Assassin; use Savage Blow from 30 | Optional Cash Shop SP Reset Scroll later to move L7 and KE into Double Stab |
| True dagger Bandit | DS 20, NB 15, Dis 6, Dark Sight 20 | Slower, fully melee leveling, but max Dark Sight with no reset |
planet-helper says Beta 2 players on the Sindit path "kept the claw until a dagger clearly out-damaged Meba." For Bandit second-job planning, see our Bandit guide.
Follow the claw SP order
| Level | NiaMeowDB | planet-helper |
|---|---|---|
| 10–12 | L7 3, NB 3, KE 1 by 12 | L7 3 by 11, then NB 3 and KE 1 at 12 |
| 13–18 | L7 20 by 18, KE 2 | L7 20 by 18, KE 2 |
| 19–23 | KE 15 by 23 | KE 15 by 23 |
| 24–27 | NB 15 by 27 | NB 15 by 27 |
| 28–30 | Dis 3, DS 8 | Dis 3, DS 8 |
The two orders are almost identical. Only the level 11 point differs: NiaMeowDB puts it into Nimble Body, planet-helper into Lucky Seven. planet-helper's reasoning: Lucky Seven 3 kills a Pig in 2 casts at level 11, and the first point of Keen Eyes gives "the biggest range jump." It also says its older order (Keen Eyes 15 before any Lucky Seven) left you on basic attacks until level 16.
Dagger order (planet-helper): Double Stab 20 by level 17, Nimble Body 15 by 22, Disorder 3, Dark Sight 20 by 29, Disorder 6 at 30.
Compare claw and dagger damage
planet-helper's casts-to-kill table with level 20 weapons (Garnier + Subi at 108 LUK, vs Coconut Knife at 80 LUK):
| Monster | Lucky Seven 20 | Double Stab 20 |
|---|---|---|
| Stirge | 1–2 | 2–3 |
| Jr. Necki | 1–2 | 1–2 |
| Horny Mushroom | 2–3 | 2–4 |
| Zombie Mushroom | 2–3 | 2–4 |
NiaMeowDB's formula explains why LUK matters so much for claws: Lucky Seven uses a weapon factor of 3.0 and 0.5 mastery, so one LUK adds 125% more average stat damage than one STR or DEX.
Split AP between LUK and DEX
| Level | Base DEX | Base LUK | For (NiaMeowDB) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 5 | 57 | No DEX needed |
| 15 | 15 | 72 | Steel Titans |
| 20 | 20 | 92 | Steel Igor |
| 25 | 25 | 112 | Meba |
| 30 | 30 | 132 | Adamantium Guards |
From level 10 to 15, put levels 11–13 into LUK and 14–15 into DEX. Also from NiaMeowDB: "an item's own stats cannot satisfy its requirement," but DEX from other gear you're already wearing counts. The wiki's dagger example: the Lv 17 Triple-Tipped Zamadar needs 31 LUK and 11 DEX.
| Mob | Your level | Accuracy for 100% |
|---|---|---|
| Bubbling (Lv 15) | 15 | 31 |
| Stirge (Lv 20) | 20 | 44 |
| Zombie Mushroom (Lv 24) | 20 / 25 | 54 / 47 |
Example: NiaMeowDB's level 20 sample has 49 accuracy. That's enough for Stirges but not for Zombie Mushrooms (54). By level 25 it has 65.
Upgrade claws and stars
| Levels | Claw + stars (NiaMeowDB) | Useful gear |
|---|---|---|
| 10–14 | Beginner's Garnier + Subi | Black Ghetto Beanie |
| 15–19 | Steel Titans (7,000 mesos from Cutthroat Manny) | Black Duo |
| 20–24 | Steel Igor | Black Loosecap |
| 25–29 | Meba + Wolbi | Dark Wolfskin |
| 30 | Adamantium Guards (Weaponcrafting 6) + Wolbi | Dark Guise, Steel Sylvia, Sauna Robe |
Meba vs Adamantium Guards: Meba is the only Speed 3 claw in this range. NiaMeowDB's test shows a clean Adamantium Guards deals only 2.7% more DPS, and 0.9% more once both have seven Lesser scrolls. Adamantium still wins on damage per MP. Gloves: five Lesser Attack scrolls add about 12.5% expected Lucky Seven damage, against about 1.0% from Critical Rate scrolls. More in our scrolling guide.
Dagger users can carry a shield, but claw users can't. NiaMeowDB lists the Pan Lid (8.1% Guard) and the Nimble and Jurgen Wristguards (9.7% Guard). Free drops (the wiki) include the Triple-Tipped Zamadar from Bubblings, Sneak Pants from Horny Mushrooms, and the Dark Guise from Jr. Wraiths.
Train in the subway
| Level | Picks (NiaMeowDB Training Advisor, modeled) |
|---|---|
| 10 | The Rain-Forest East of Henesys; Dungeon, Southern Forest I |
| 15 | Tree Dungeon, Forest Up North IV; Southern Forest III |
| 20 | Transfer Area (Stirges); Damp Forest |
| 25–30 | Transfer Area; Dangerous Steam |
NiaMeowDB warns that Stirge maps "were by far the most popular Lucky Seven training spots in COT2," and that crowding and kill-stealing "can erase its EXP advantage." The wiki calls the Kerning subway the Thief's home turf, from Bubblings at level 13 to Jr. Wraiths in the mid-thirties, and lists Thief's Construction Site for level 30. For more maps, see our training guide.
Budget stars and potions
- Stars: a Subi or Wolbi stack holds 500, which is 250 casts and 4,000 MP at Lucky Seven 20 (NiaMeowDB). Recharge in Kerning, next to the Transfer Area.
- Potions: Red Potion, Fried Chicken, and Meat cost 0.5 meso per HP. Orange and Lemon cost 1 meso per MP. White and Blue Potions are worse value.
- Claw punch: inside 65 px your claw punches instead of throwing. A jump attack gets you back out of range.
Meso planning is in our mesos guide.
Avoid the classic mistakes
- Adding DEX for the advancement (NiaMeowDB).
- Building Double Stab without committing to a full dagger build.
- Buying rare stars before a current claw and MP food.
- Standing inside claw-punch range.
- Picking male if you want the Lv 35 Dark Avenger overall (+6 LUK, 10 slots), which only female Thieves can wear.
Pick your second job at 30
| Branch | Plays as (NiaMeowDB) | Our guide |
|---|---|---|
| Assassin | Keep Lucky Seven; add Claw Mastery, Critical Throw, Haste | Assassin |
| Bandit | Haste first; Savage Blow; optional reset into Double Stab | Bandit |
The wiki says the choice is permanent, "only the weapon you invested drops and mesos into differs." The full process is in our job advancement guide.
Return, reroll, or level with friends
- Returning player: in old MapleStory, many Bandits leveled with Double Stab. In Classic, NiaMeowDB and planet-helper both say Lucky Seven is faster from 10 to 30.
- Party leveling: Lucky Seven's range is good for kill-stealing, which NiaMeowDB lists as a "pro," but that annoys parties on crowded maps. Party roles are in our world-first party plan.
- Paid leveling: before you look at powerleveling, read the service note at the end of this guide and Nexon's Terms of Service first.

What may change at Grand Launch
This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.
FAQ
Where do you become a Thief? At level 10, from the Dark Lord beneath Kerning City's Fusion Jazz Bar. There's no stat requirement (NiaMeowDB, the wiki).
Lucky Seven or Double Stab for levels 10–30? Lucky Seven, for both future Assassins and Bandits (NiaMeowDB, planet-helper). Use Double Stab only on a true dagger build.
What is a Sindit? A Bandit who leveled first job with Lucky Seven and a claw, then switches to Savage Blow at 30 and optionally resets SP into Double Stab (NiaMeowDB).
How much DEX does a Thief need? Enough for each claw: 15 DEX at 15, 20 at 20, 25 at 25, and 30 at 30 in NiaMeowDB's plan. Everything else goes into LUK.
Is Meba good? Yes. A clean Meba is within 2.7% of the DPS of a clean Adamantium Guards.
How many Lucky Seven casts does a star stack give? 250 casts per 500-star stack, which uses 4,000 MP at skill level 20.
