A claw is the Thief's throwing weapon, and your weapon attack is the claw's attack plus the stars'. MapleStory Classic World has 31 claws, from the level 10 Garnier to the level 70 Scarabs, and 11 kinds of throwing star. This MapleStory Classic claws guide lists every claw with its attack, stat needs, cost and source. It covers which claws you can craft, which variant to pick in each tier, every throwing star with its drop sources, and what scrolling a claw costs in the live Grand Launch game.
Quick summary
- 31 claws across 10 level tiers. Attack runs from +10 (Garnier) to +47 (Green, Blue and Black Scarab). Every tier needs DEX equal to its level and LUK equal to twice its level plus 5, starting at level 15 (MapleStory Quest; the pattern is our own reading).
- Meba is the standout early claw. It's the only Faster (3) claw, at level 25, and Cutthroat Manny sells it for 16,500 mesos (NiaMeowDB launch prices).
- Weaponcrafting covers claws up to level 40. The level 40 variants and all level 50 Slains need craft level 9–10, past the craft level 8 cap that Grand Launch kept (MapleStory Quest).
- Pick crit rate variants over crit damage. With Critical Throw maxed, +1% crit rate adds about 0.55% average damage, and +1% crit damage adds about 0.2% (our math on NiaMeowDB's crit numbers).
- Ilbi and Hwabi stars are boss drops. No recorded shop sells them, and an NPC pays 20,000 and 25,000 mesos for one (MapleStory Quest).

Cutthroat Manny's recorded stock holds only four claws: Garnier, Steel Titans, Steel Igor and Meba (NiaMeowDB). MapleStory Quest's community price list also shows Adamantium Guards at 27,600, but NiaMeowDB's shop record doesn't, so don't count on finding it there.
Know which claws you can craft
Mr. Thunder's Weaponcrafting makes claws. Our Weaponcrafting guide covers unlocking it in Perion. MapleStory Quest's crafting page says the Public Release "stops at craft level 8." It keeps level 9 and 10 recipes listed, but marks them as Closed Online Test 2 data.
| Claw tier | Craft level | Craftable now? | Character level for the craft (5 × craft level) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Titans (15) | 3 | Yes | 15 |
| Igors (20) | 4 | Yes | 20 |
| Meba (25) | 5 | Yes | 25 |
| Guards (30) | 6 | Yes | 30 |
| Guardians (35) | 7 | Yes | 35 |
| Steel Avarice (40) | 8 | Yes | 40 |

| Gigantics (60), Scarabs (70) | None | Drop only | – |
Upgraded claws are a two-step craft. You make the base claw (Steel Titans, Bronze Igor, Steel Guards, Bronze Guardian), then add ingots or a gem for a 1,000 or 2,000-mesos fee. The base materials (MapleStory Quest):
| Base claw | Materials | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| Steel Titans | 3 Iron Ingots, 10 Processed Leather, 9 Screws | 3,500 |
| Bronze Igor | 2 Bronze Ingots, 2 Iron Ingots, 20 Processed Leather, 12 Screws | 4,500 |
| Meba | 1 Garnier, 3 Iron Ingots, 30 Processed Leather, 2 Processed Wood, 15 Screws | 5,500 |
| Steel Guards | 3 Bronze Ingots, 3 Iron Ingots, 40 Processed Leather, 18 Screws | 6,500 |
| Bronze Guardian | 4 Bronze Ingots, 3 Iron Ingots, 50 Processed Leather, 21 Screws | 9,000 |
| Steel Avarice | 4 Bronze Ingots, 4 Iron Ingots, 60 Processed Leather, 24 Screws | 11,500 |
Decide whether to craft or buy
Our math on Meba: the craft costs 5,500 mesos plus a Garnier (5,000 at Manny), so 10,500 before materials. Buying costs 16,500. Crafting wins only if 3 Iron Ingots, 30 Processed Leather, 2 Processed Wood and 15 Screws cost you less than 6,000 mesos. That's true if you farm and refine them yourself, but usually not if you buy them. Your old level 10 Garnier is the cheapest Garnier you'll find, so keep it until you're ready.
Our math on the level 30 tier: a crafted Adamantium Guards costs the Steel Guards fee (6,500) plus 2,000, plus materials and 3 Adamantium Ingots. That's 8,500 mesos in fees against the 27,600 community price. The fees also earn craft EXP toward the next tier. Our Smithing guide covers the ingots and our Leatherworking guide the Processed Leather.
Pick the right variant in each tier
Variants in the same tier share attack and speed, and differ by one bonus line. NiaMeowDB gives the numbers to compare them: every character starts with a 5% crit rate and crits for 20% extra damage. Maxed Critical Throw adds +15% and +35%, raising that to 20% rate and 55% extra.
| Bonus | Before Critical Throw | With Critical Throw maxed |
|---|---|---|
| +1% crit rate | +0.20% average damage (1% × 20%) | +0.55% (1% × 55%) |
| +1% crit damage | +0.05% (5% × 1%) | +0.20% (20% × 1%) |
| +1 accuracy | Only matters if you miss | Same |
Our math. We read "+1" as 1 percentage point, as NiaMeowDB's claw pages list it (CRIT% +1).
Pick: Mithril Titans, Mithril Guards, Silver Guardian and Dark Slain (the crit rate variants) when the price is close. Blood variants add accuracy, which helps only if you're under the accuracy you need for your targets. Check our accuracy guide.
Weigh Meba's speed against attack
Meba is the only Faster (3) claw. Our attack speed guide quotes NiaMeowDB's level 30 example: Meba with Wolbis does 40,630 damage per minute, and Adamantium Guards does 41,671. One speed tier almost cancels a 4-attack gap. Keep the Meba until Claw Booster or a Guardian-tier claw pulls clearly ahead.
Choose your throwing stars
| Star | Atk | Per set (NiaMeowDB) | Recharge per star (NiaMeowDB) | NPC pays | Where to get it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Subi | 15 | 500 | 0.3 | 250 | Every Victoria grocer, 500 (NiaMeowDB) |
| Wolbi | 17 | 500 | 0.4 | 500 | Max's City General Store, Kerning City Civic Center, 1,000 at Helpful Stranger+ citizenship; Fire Boar (older data) |
| Mokbi | 19 | 700 | 0.5 | 1,000 | Jr. Wraith, Cold Eye, Stone Golem (older data) |
| Kumbi | 21 | 700 | 0.6 | 1,500 | Fire Boar, Lupin, Drake, Stone Golem (older data) |
| Tobi | 23 | 1,000 | 0.7 | 2,500 | Dark Stone Golem, Wild Kargo (older data) |
| Steely Throwing Knives | 25 | 1,000 | 0.8 | 10,000 | Red Drake, Tauromacis (older data) |
| Ilbi | 27 | 800 | 0.9 | 20,000 | Mushmom, Zombie Mushmom, 0.25% (older data) |
| Hwabi | 29 | 800 | 1 | 25,000 | Jr. Balrog, Zombie Mushmom, 0.25% (older data) |
| Snowball | 17 | 800 | 1 | 500 | No source recorded |
| Wooden Top | 19 | 800 | 1 | 500 | Axe Stump, Dark Axe Stump (older data) |
| Icicle | 21 | 800 | 1 | 500 | No source recorded |
Attack and NPC price from MapleStory Quest (client). Older-version drop rates are 0.04% for most stars. All stars require level 10.
Our math on recharging: a full Subi set costs about 150 mesos to refill (500 × 0.3) and Hwabi about 800 (NiaMeowDB recharge costs). Snowball, Wooden Top and Icicle cost 1 meso per star, which is more than Wolbi, Mokbi and Kumbi with the same attack. Recharge at a grocer, such as the one next to Kerning's Transfer Area (NiaMeowDB, via our Thief guide).
Never sell your last Ilbi set. An NPC pays 20,000 mesos, but no shop restocks them. Farm Mushmom or Zombie Mushmom for a new set. Since Grand Launch, field boss respawn times are more randomized (Nexon), so plan Ilbi runs as channel checks rather than fixed timers.
Assassin skills that change the claw and star math
Your claw and stars are only part of the damage. NiaMeowDB's Claw Mastery page gives the live values: at max level 20 it adds Attack Power +20 and a 25% chance to recover a used throwing star, only while a claw is equipped. That recovery chance is a direct cut to your recharge bill: at 25%, one throw in four costs nothing. Critical Throw, Claw Booster and Haste round out the build; our Assassin guide has the skill order.
Example (our math): an Assassin throwing 2,000 Wolbis an hour at 0.4 mesos each spends about 800 mesos recharging. With max Claw Mastery recovering a quarter of them, the bill drops to about 600. On Ilbis at 0.9 mesos, the same hour costs about 1,350 instead of 1,800.
Get Wolbis early through citizenship
Wolbis are the first star upgrade most Thieves can buy. Max sells them from citizenship grade 3, Helpful Stranger (NiaMeowDB). Thieves can apply at level 12. Our citizenship guide covers the dailies. Our Kerning City guide shows where Max stands.
Scroll your claw
Every claw has 7 slots. MapleStory Quest lists four Claw Attack Scroll tiers:
| Scroll | Success | Effect | Destroy | Expected attack over 7 slots (our math) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lesser | 100% | +1 attack | No | +7 |
| Intermediate | 60% | +2 attack | No | +8.4 average |
| Greater | 10% | +4 attack | No | +2.8 average |
| Chaos | 10% | +5 attack | 50% | Not worth it on a claw you need |
El Moth, the scroll seller at The Tree That Grew III, sells Claw Attack Scroll: Lesser for 60,000 mesos (NiaMeowDB launch prices). Seven of them come to 420,000 mesos for a guaranteed +7. Our scrolling guide explains the tiers.
Our take: don't scroll a claw you'll replace within 10 levels. Save Lessers for a Guards or Guardian-tier claw you'll keep through your 30s, or for a Meba if you plan to stay on it.
Follow an upgrade path
| Level | Claw | Stars | Total weapon attack | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | Garnier (or Beginner's Garnier) | Subi | 25 | Buy Subis at any grocer |
| 15 | Mithril Titans or Steel Titans | Subi | 29–28 | Craft Mithril if you have the ingot |
| 20 | Steel Igor | Subi or Wolbi | 32–34 | Buy Steel Igor from Manny |
| 25 | Meba | Wolbi | 36 | Faster (3) |
| 30 | Mithril Guards or keep Meba | Wolbi | 40 or 36 | See the speed comparison above |
| 35 | Silver Guardian | Wolbi or Mokbi | 43–45 | Craft Lv 7 |
| 40 | Steel Avarice | Mokbi or Kumbi | 47–49 | The last launch craft |
| 50+ | Slain, Gigantic, Scarab | Ilbi or Hwabi | 61–76 | Drops or trading only |
Our math: claw attack + star attack, before scrolls and Claw Mastery's +20 attack power (NiaMeowDB). For AP, put in just enough DEX for your next claw and the rest in LUK. Our AP planning guide has the totals.
Handle alts and returning players
- Thief alt? Keep your main's spare Ilbis and Hwabis in storage for the alt. Stars have no level requirement above 10. A level 10 alt with Ilbis has 37 total weapon attack on a Garnier (our math).
- Back from original MapleStory? Claw Attack Scrolls now come in Lesser (100%), Intermediate (60%), Greater (10%) and Chaos tiers (MapleStory Quest), not the old percentage-named scrolls. There's no recorded shop for Mokbi, Kumbi or Tobi stars at launch, so you'll find them as drops or in trades.
- Planning a Bandit instead? Bandits use daggers. See our daggers guide and Bandit guide.
- Budgeting an Assassin? Stars and claws make it one of the pricier jobs; our class costs guide compares it with every other second job.

What changed for claws at Grand Launch
Grand Launch (v1.0.0, October 21, 2026) didn't change any claw, star or claw recipe in this guide, and crafting still stops at craft level 8, so the Avarice variants and Slains stay locked. The Thief changes in Nexon's Grand Launch maintenance notes are elsewhere:
- Dark Sight now makes you semi-transparent to every player, not just your party.
- Field boss respawns are more randomized, which affects Ilbi and Hwabi farming on Mushmom, Zombie Mushmom and Jr. Balrog.
- Monsters level 10–30 drop more potions, which trims an early Assassin's potion bill.
Max still sells Wolbis to Helpful Stranger citizens in Kerning City (NiaMeowDB's citizenship data). Third job, Orbis and El Nath are still closed, so no Hermit claws or Ossyrian stars are in the game. The MapleStory Classic hub collects every guide for the game.
FAQ
What is the best claw in MapleStory Classic?
The best you can craft is Steel Avarice (level 40, +28). The highest attack in the client is the level 70 Green, Blue and Black Scarab at +47, which are drop-only (MapleStory Quest).
Is Meba worth buying?
Yes, for most Thieves at level 25. It's the only Faster (3) claw, and NiaMeowDB's example shows it keeping up with level 30 claws. Manny sells it for 16,500 mesos.
Can I craft claws above level 40?
Not yet. The level 40 variants and the Slains need craft level 9 or 10, and crafting still stops at craft level 8 after Grand Launch (MapleStory Quest).
Where do I get Ilbi throwing stars?
From Mushmom and Zombie Mushmom, according to older drop data (MapleStory Quest). No recorded shop sells them.
Which claw variant should I pick?
The crit rate variant when prices are close. With Critical Throw maxed, +1% crit rate is worth about 0.55% average damage, against 0.2% for +1% crit damage (our math).
Where can I buy Wolbi stars?
At Max's City General Store in the Kerning City Civic Center, for 1,000 mesos once you reach Helpful Stranger citizenship (NiaMeowDB).
