WoW Forever Professions: Best Picks, Tier List, New Recipes

THE GUIDE

WoW Forever keeps Classic's nine primary professions and three secondary skills. What changes is everything around them: more than 600 new recipes spread across every skill range, crafted food that adds kill XP, camp objects for every trade, Blueprint recipes from dungeon bosses, and Legacy perks for crafters. This WoW Forever professions guide ranks them with stated criteria, then covers how many recipes each gained, the one craft in each that changes how you play, what Blizzard tuned before launch, and which two professions fit your class.

Recipe counts and tooltips come from the final beta client as read by WoW Handbook. Camp rules come from Blizzard's Gather Around the Campfire article (October 21). The game launches on November 4, 2026.

Quick summary

  • Blizzard promises "over 600 new recipes across professions and level ranges." WoW Handbook's read of the beta client counts 934 new, for 2,190 recipes in total (Blizzard Deep Dive recap; WoW Handbook).
  • Leatherworking (+271) and Blacksmithing (+197) gained the most recipes. Tailoring (+180) gained a full reagent-bag line (WoW Handbook).
  • Secondary skills matter now. Crafted food can grant "a small experience bonus," and First Aid now makes healing potions (Blizzard; WoW Handbook).
  • Blizzard has already nerfed some crafting income in the beta. Many crafted items now sell to vendors for less, and crafted common and uncommon wands sell for 1 copper (Kaivax, Beta Development Notes).
  • Best professions overall, by our criteria: Engineering and Alchemy, because they help every class both while leveling and at 60. Pair a gathering profession with the crafting profession it feeds, and level Cooking and First Aid on every character.

Count the new recipes

"New" can be larger than the difference between columns because some Classic recipes were removed or replaced (our reading of the matrix).

WoW Forever professions tier list

This ranking is ours and uses two questions you can check against the tables below, not other sites' rankings:

  1. Does it help every class, or only some armor types?
  2. Does it help while leveling, at level 60, or both?

S = helps every class while leveling and at 60. A = helps every class in one of the two, or only some classes in both. B = mainly feeds another profession.

Tier Profession Leveling Level 60 Who benefits
S Engineering Ultralight Goblin Glider, Tinkerboxes, escape gadgets Bombs, trinkets, goggles Every class
S Alchemy Healing potions, Dragonfire Potion Flasks and combat potions (one shared cooldown) Every class
A Enchanting Weapon and armor enchants; wand vendoring was removed Enchants, relics, staves, off-hands and wands Every class at 60
A Leatherworking Camp Tent (Rested XP), reagent bags Leather and mail sets for each role, armor kits Every class while leveling; leather and mail wearers at 60
A Blacksmithing Bind-on-pickup mail and plate Plate sets for tank, melee, healer and Paladin; thrown hammer Plate and mail wearers
A Tailoring Cloth sets, reagent bags Cloth sets by spell school and for healers Cloth wearers; bags for anyone
B Mining, Herbalism, Skinning Gold from materials; camp objects Feed the crafts; Bountiful Harvest Legacy perk Whoever crafts with them
Always Cooking, First Aid Experience food; First Aid healing potions Feasts; bigger campfires Every class (they don't use primary slots)

Sources for each cell are in the sections below (WoW Handbook; WoW-Professions; Kaivax). Merchant's Favor vendors sell the role sets for Blacksmithing, Leatherworking and Tailoring, and those crafted pieces bind on pickup, so you craft them for yourself (WoW-Professions).

Profession changes in Blizzard's beta notes

Draught of Predatory Senses "is now a Potion, on the Combat Potion cooldown," with shorter duration Alchemy combat potions share one cooldown Kaivax
Dungeon-drop recipes for Blacksmithing and Leatherworking "are now available" Run new dungeons for patterns Kaivax
Fewer Poor Copper Vein nodes in starter areas Early Mining is slower Kaivax
Creatures "can once again only be skinned a single time" No double-skinning Kaivax
Tauren Cultivation now needs a player level equal to the herb's skill ÷ 5 Tauren herbalists are level-gated Kaivax

Train each rank on time

Rank Skill range Character level Source
Apprentice 1–75 5 WoW Handbook
Journeyman 75–150 10 WoW Handbook
Expert 150–225 20 WoW Handbook
Artisan 225–300 35 WoW Handbook

Expert Cooking and Expert First Aid come from vendor books. Artisan First Aid needs the Triage quest, and Artisan Cooking needs a quest chain (WoW Handbook). Specializations unlock at 200 for Engineering (Gnomish or Goblin) and Blacksmithing (Armorsmith or Weaponsmith), and at 225 for Leatherworking (Dragonscale, Elemental or Tribal) (WoW Handbook). WoW Handbook warns that its leveling routes are "the Classic Era route." Check your own recipe colors in Forever.

Use camps and Blueprints

Every profession has three camp objects. The first unlocks at skill 20 from starter-zone quests or trainers, and objects that need skill 140 or more drop in dungeons and raids (Blizzard). You get the other players' camp bonuses after sitting or crafting at the campfire for 1 minute, and all camp features share a 1-hour cooldown (Blizzard). A Basic Campfire holds three objects, one per player, and Cooks can build campfires that hold 5 or 10. Examples of Blueprint drops:

Blueprint Profession Drops from Source
Greenhouse Herbalism 140 Shadetooth, Excavation Site wowforever.be, via our Excavation Site guide
Rock Garden Mining 140 Relic Guardian, Excavation Site Same
Spinning Wheel Tailoring Unstable Sentinel, City of Dalaran WoW Handbook, via our Dalaran guide
Arcane Salvager Enchanting Shade of the Archmage, City of Dalaran Same

Leatherworkers need a placed Tanning Rack for "more advanced Leatherworking recipes". For every camp buff, see our camping guide. New recipe vendors are covered in our Merchant's Favor guide.

Spend Legacy points on crafting

Perk Ranks Effect Source
Working Overtime 5 +4% to +20% skill-up chance Our Legacy guide, citing Blizzard and TFE
Bountiful Harvest 5 +20% to +100% Scarce materials from Mining, Herbalism, Skinning Same
Master Chef 5 10% to 50% chance of an extra cooking result Same
Luremaster 2 25% to 50% chance of an extra fish with a Lure Same
Dedicated Study 1 +1 daily to your lowest tradeskill Same

Each non-gathering profession you take to 150, 225 and 300 earns Legacy points. Gathering professions earn none directly (Blizzard, via our Legacy guide).

Compare the best pairs

Pair Best for Why Source
Herbalism + Alchemy Druid, Priest, Mage, Warlock, Shaman Self-supplied potions, flasks and new combat potions WoW Handbook
Mining + Blacksmithing Warrior, Paladin Plate and mail, new armor families, the thrown hammer WoW Handbook
Mining + Engineering Any class, PvP and Hardcore Glider, Tinkerboxes, stealth and escape gadgets WoW Handbook
Skinning + Leatherworking Rogue, Hunter, Druid, Shaman Biggest recipe book, Camp Tent, armor kits, bags WoW Handbook
Tailoring + Enchanting Priest, Mage, Warlock No gathering needed, bags, relics, staves WoW Handbook

Our assessment for leveling: Skinning and Leatherworking gives the Camp Tent's Rested XP and steady hide income from questing. For Hardcore, Mining and Engineering gives escape tools.

Example: a Rogue levels with Skinning and Leatherworking, places a Camp Tent at each night's stop to top up Rested XP, fills Textiles crates with spare leather for Merchant's Favor, and swaps Skinning for Mining and Engineering at 60 for raid gadgets. Our leveling guide covers how Rested XP fits a route. See our Hardcore guide. Whatever you pick, level Cooking and First Aid too. They don't use primary slots.

For alts and returning players

  • Returning from Classic: the professions, ranks and trainers are the same. The recipe books are bigger, and camps and Blueprints are new (WoW Handbook; Blizzard).
  • Alts: Legacy's Dedicated Study and Working Overtime speed up crafting alts. Bountiful Harvest suits a dedicated gatherer (our Legacy guide).
  • New race/class pairs: Tauren herbalists now face Cultivation level gates (Kaivax). Racial details are in our race/class combos guide.
  • Skyborne: Shenthul in Orgrimmar now trains Windshaper Skyborne (Kaivax).
  • Raiders: fire resistance gear and potions matter for Onyxia's Lair; our raids guide covers preparation. New dungeons drop Blueprints and patterns; see the new dungeons guide.
  • New to Forever? Start at the WoW Forever hub.
