WoW Forever Mage Guide: Talents, Builds, Stats, Best Race
WoW Forever Mage guide: Frost, Fire and Arcane talent builds, Frostfire Bolt, the new Arcane Blast, stats, professions and the best race after Oct 26.

In this guide 17 sections
WoW Forever's Mage keeps its three trees but gets a new tool in each of them. Frost has Ice Lance and Fingers of Frost. Fire has Heating Up and Frostfire Bolt. Arcane has Arcane Blast and Missile Barrage, and the October 15 beta build reworked both and added Arcane Wrath. This WoW Forever Mage guide covers every baseline change, the talent trees as of the October 15 build, the new spells, a build for each spec, stats, professions and the best race after Blizzard's October 26 racial pass.
The talent data comes from the final beta client as read by WoW Handbook (updated October 24) and Blizzard's WoW Forever development notes. The game launches on November 4, 2026, so check your talent tooltips on day one for last-minute tuning.
Quick summary
- Three new trainable spells: Frost Blast at 24, Frostfire Bolt at 40 and Teleport: Dalaran at 50 (WoW Handbook).
- Every tree has a 16-point talent to build toward: Arcane Wrath for Arcane (since October 15, replacing Missile Barrage there), Heating Up for Fire and Ice Block for Frost (WoW Handbook; Kaivax).
- October 15 redesigned Arcane Blast: a 1.5-second cast that gives you 15% of your Intellect as spell damage per stack, up to 4 stacks, for 15 seconds. Arcane Wrath, a new 16-point talent, adds spell power equal to 5% of your maximum Mana (Kaivax).
- Frost lost burst on October 15: Ice Lance hits Frozen targets for 200% more, down from 300%. Winter's Chill no longer adds crit and now boosts Cone of Cold instead (Kaivax).
- Frost is the leveling spec; Fire and Arcane are the group and raid picks once your gear has spell damage.
- Orcs and Alliance Skyborne can be Mages. Horde Skyborne can't (WoW Handbook). After the October 26 racial pass, Gnome and Orc are the burst picks, and Human's crit racial dropped to 1% (Kaivax).
Learn what changed for every Mage
| Change | Forever | Classic | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frostfire Bolt | Trained at 40: 3-second cast, Fire and Frost damage, 40% slow, burn over 9 seconds | Not in Classic | WoW Handbook |
| Frost Blast | Trained at 24: 1.5-second cast, 40% slow, uses Frostbolt talents | Not in Classic | Kaivax, October 15 |
| Teleport: Dalaran | Trained at 50 | Not in Classic | WoW Handbook |
| Cone of Cold | Shorter slow; the first 4 targets hit are slowed 10% more for 3 seconds longer | Longer slow, no 4-target bonus | WoW Handbook; Kaivax, October 15 |
| Improved Blizzard | 40% slow at most | 65% | WoW Handbook |
| Mage Armor | More Mana from Spirit while casting | Classic value | The Forever Era |
| Ignite, Improved Scorch, Winter's Chill | Count only for the Mage who applied them | Shared by all Mages | WoW Handbook |
| Comprehension | New Mage-only skill: read scrolls that creatures drop | Not in Classic | WoW Handbook; The Forever Era |
| Magic Attunement | Baseline | Arcane talent | The Forever Era |
| Races | Orcs and Alliance Skyborne can be Mages | Not available | WoW Handbook |
WoW Handbook explains the effect of per-Mage debuffs: "Your damage is your own in a raid full of Mages." Comprehension pairs with Library Books: collect 40 across Azeroth and donate them in the mage quarter for Comprehension Charms, a necklace and a ring (WoW Handbook). Since October 1, Mage scrolls from Comprehension can't be cast while moving (Kaivax).
Plan your key spells by level
| Level | New or changed spell (WoW Handbook spellbook) |
|---|---|
| 8 | Arcane Missiles, Polymorph |
| 20 | Blink, Evocation, Mana Shield, Fire Ward, first city teleports |
| 22 | Scorch, Frost Ward |
| 24 | Counterspell, Frost Blast |
| 26 | Cone of Cold |
| 28 | Conjure Mana Agate |
| 34 | Mage Armor |
| 40 | Frostfire Bolt, first portals |
| 50 | Teleport: Dalaran, last two portals |
| 56 | Arcane Brilliance |
| 60 | Polymorph: Cow |
WoW Handbook lists 48 trainable Mage spells, and 3 are new: Teleport: Dalaran, Frostfire Bolt and Frost Blast. Our City of Dalaran guide covers the new hub.
Why Frost Blast exists: Kaivax says it provides "the functionality formerly granted by Rank 1 Frostbolt despite the penalization of 'down-ranking'." The Forever Era notes Arcane Concentration now triggers less often from spells "of a significantly lower rank." So keep Frost Blast on your bar for slows, and stop relying on rank 1 Frostbolt.
Best Mage spec in WoW Forever
| Spec | Strength | Weakness | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frost | Frostbite and Fingers of Frost freezes, Ice Lance, Ice Block at 16 | Ice Lance cut to +200% on Frozen targets | Best leveling start |
| Fire | Heating Up for fast Pyroblasts, Fire Power up to 12%, Frostfire Bolt | Needs crits; Ignite no longer double-dips | Dungeons and raids |
| Arcane | Arcane Blast spell-damage stacks, free fast Missile Barrage, Arcane Wrath | Rebuilt on October 15; Mana-hungry | Mana-heavy raid gear |
WoW Handbook calls the Frost start the one to use for questing.
What the class does well: high damage in all three trees, Blink, Polymorph, conjured food and water, and teleports and portals (Teleport: Dalaran at 50 is new). What it struggles with: long casts, a cloth-armor health pool, and Mana. Arcane Blast's cost grows 175% per stack, so Arcane runs dry fastest. Our tier list covers where Mage lands for leveling and raids.
Build a Frost Mage
| Talent | Row | Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elemental Precision | 1 | +5% hit with Frost and Fire spells | Changed |
| Improved Frostbolt | 1 | Frostbolt and Frost Blast 0.5 seconds faster | Changed |
| Ice Shards | 2 | +100% Frost crit damage bonus | Same |
| Frostbite | 2 | Chill effects: 15% chance to Freeze for 5 seconds | Moved in |
| Frost Channeling | 3 | Frost spells 15% cheaper, 30% less threat | Moved in |
| Ice Lance | 3 | Deals 200% more damage to Frozen targets | New |
| Ice Block | 4 (16 points) | 10 seconds immune to all attacks and spells | Moved in |
| Shatter | 4 | +50% crit chance against Frozen targets | Changed |
| Fingers of Frost | 5 | Chill effects: 15% chance to treat your next 2 spells as if the target were Frozen | New |
| Cold Snap | 5 (21 points) | Resets your other Frost cooldowns; 10-minute cooldown | Changed |
| Winter's Chill | 6 | Frost spells stack Winter's Chill: +40% Cone of Cold damage per stack, up to 5 | Changed, October 15 |
| Ice Barrier | 7 (31 points) | Absorbs 447 damage; casts aren't interrupted while it holds | Changed |
Starter build to level 20 (0/0/11), WoW Handbook: Elemental Precision 5/5 (levels 10–14), Frostbite 3/3, Ice Shards 2/5, Ice Lance 1/1 at 20. Its reasoning: "a resisted Frostbolt costs you more than any other talent here adds." Ice Shards is the flexible pair of points, and WoW Handbook suggests Frost Warding or Improved Frost Nova if you take more damage than you expect.
Our math on Ice Lance: 200% more means 3× damage on a Frozen target, down from 4×. That's a 25% cut to each Frozen hit. Shatter's +50% crit on Frozen targets still makes those hits the best ones you have.
Build a Fire Mage
| Talent | Row | Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Improved Fire Blast | 1 | Fire Blast cooldown −2 seconds, range +15 yards | Changed (Wake of Fire reverted, October 15) |
| Incineration | 1 | +6% crit for Fire Blast, Ice Lance, Arcane Blast and Scorch | New |
| Improved Fireball | 1 | Fireball and Frostfire Bolt 0.5 seconds faster | Changed |
| Ignite | 2 | Fire crits burn for 40% more over 4 seconds | Same |
| Pyroblast | 3 | Big Fire nuke plus a burn | Changed |
| Improved Scorch | 4 | Scorch adds 3% Fire vulnerability, up to 5 stacks, for 30 seconds | Changed |
| Heating Up | 4 (16 points) | Crits cut your next Pyroblast's cast time by 25%, up to 3 stacks | New |
| Master of Elements | 4 | Fire and Frost crits refund 30% of base Mana | Changed |
| Critical Mass | 5 | +10% Fire crit (now 5 ranks) | Changed, October 15 |
| Fire Power | 6 | +1/2/3% Fire damage per Fire effect on the target, up to 12% | Changed, October 15 |
| Combustion | 7 (31 points) | +10% Fire crit per Fire hit until 3 non-periodic crits | Changed |
Starter build to level 20 (0/11/0), WoW Handbook: Improved Fireball 5/5 (levels 10–14), Improved Fire Blast 2/2, Ignite 3/5, Pyroblast 1/1 at 20. It warns that taking Ignite before Improved Fire Blast "is the common mistake."
Our math on Heating Up: three stacks cut 75% off Pyroblast's 6-second cast, leaving 1.5 seconds, which matches WoW Handbook's note. Since October 15, every Fire Blast adds a stack, so a Fire Blast crit adds two (Kaivax). Our math on Fire Power: at 3/3, four Fire effects on the target (for example Ignite, Improved Scorch, Fireball's burn and Pyroblast's burn) reach the 12% cap. Kaivax lists the qualifying effects as Ignite, Improved Scorch, Fireball, Pyroblast and Impact. Frostfire Bolt doesn't count as one, but it does benefit from the bonus.
Build an Arcane Mage
| Talent | Row | Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wand Specialization | 1 | +25% wand damage | Moved in |
| Arcane Focus | 1 | +5% hit with Arcane spells | Changed |
| Improved Channeling | 1 | Arcane Missiles can't be interrupted by damage; 70% for Arcane Blast and Arcane Wrath | New |
| Missile Barrage | 1 | Your next Arcane Missiles is free and fires every 0.5 seconds; 40% chance from Arcane Blast, 20% from Fireball, Frostbolt, Frostfire Bolt and Arcane Wrath, 10% per missile | New, moved October 15 |
| Arcane Concentration | 2 | 10% chance of Clearcasting after a damage spell hits | Same |
| Arcane Impact | 3 | +6% Arcane crit | New |
| Arcane Blast | 3 | 15% of Intellect as spell damage per cast, up to 4 stacks, 15 seconds; cost +175% per stack | New, redesigned October 15 |
| Arcane Wrath | 4 (16 points) | Projectile with spell damage equal to 5% of maximum Mana; 3.5-second cast, 6-second cooldown | New, October 15 |
| Presence of Mind | 5 | Next spell under 10 seconds is instant | Same |
| Arcane Mind | 5 | +10% Intellect, +100% Arcane crit damage bonus | Changed |
| Arcane Instability | 6 | +3% spell damage and +3% crit | Changed |
| Arcane Power | 7 (31 points) | +30% spell damage, +30% Mana cost, 15 seconds | Changed |
Starter build to level 20 (11/0/0), WoW Handbook: Wand Specialization 2/2, Arcane Focus 3/5, Arcane Concentration 5/5, Arcane Blast 1/1 at 20. WoW Handbook notes that "before 20 a wand is a large share of what you actually deal."
Our math on Arcane Blast: four stacks give 60% of your Intellect as spell damage. At 300 Intellect, that's +180 spell damage for 15 seconds, applied to every spell you cast, including Arcane Missiles. Kaivax also cut Arcane Blast's own damage and coefficients by 40%. So Arcane Blast now builds damage rather than dealing it. Our math on Arcane Wrath: at 6,000 maximum Mana, it casts as if you had 300 more spell power, which favors Intellect-heavy gear.
Track the Mage patch history
| Build | Mage changes (Kaivax) |
|---|---|
| September 24 | Arcane Missiles checks line of sight once, at the start. Wake of Fire buff 30 seconds (was 20). Hot Streak 20 seconds (was 15). Ignite no longer double-dips on % damage modifiers |
| October 1 | Comprehension scrolls can't be cast while moving. Hot Streak renamed Heating Up. Combustion back to 3 charges (was 4). Improved Scorch and Winter's Chill no longer roll a second resist |
| October 8 | Impact can't trigger from Flamestrike's damage over time. Frostbolt, Fireball and Arcane Missiles low ranks retuned so every new rank is an upgrade |
| October 15 | Frost Blast added. Arcane Blast redesigned; Arcane Wrath added; Missile Barrage moved to row 1. Presence of Mind consumption fixed. Wake of Fire back to Improved Fire Blast. Critical Mass 5 ranks. Fire Power redesigned. Ice Lance 200% (was 300%). Cone of Cold 4-target bonus. Winter's Chill redesigned. Clearcasting fixes. Frostbite and Fingers of Frost now trigger from Frost and Ice Armor. Ice Block "was too transparent," now fixed |
| October 26–27 | Racial pass: Human Ruthless 1%, Orc Savage removed and Blood Fury 2 minutes, Troll Berserking 15 seconds, Undead Touch of the Grave 15-second cooldown, Skyborne Wind Blessed 2% |
Compare the leveling methods
| Method | Speed | Downtime | Risk | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frost questing (Frostbolt, Frostbite, Ice Lance) | Fast | Low | Low | Most players |
| Fire questing (Fireball, Fire Blast, Pyroblast) | Fast kills | Higher; more Mana | Medium | Players who like burst |
| Arcane questing with a wand to 20 | Medium | Medium | Low | Arcane raid prep |
| Area-of-effect pulls in dungeons | Fast with a tank | Low | High solo | Groups; see the slow nerfs |
This is our assessment from WoW Handbook's build notes and the patch history. Classic's big kite-and-Blizzard pulls are harder: Improved Blizzard tops out at a 40% slow and Cone of Cold's slow is shorter (WoW Handbook). Our dungeons guide lists group stops by level.
Best Mage race in WoW Forever
Blizzard's final racial pass on October 26 and 27 changed several Mage racials (Kaivax). The table uses the current values.
| Race | Faction | Mage-relevant racials | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gnome | Alliance | Eureka!: an 8-second window of 10% cheaper, 10% stronger spells; Escape Artist; Expansive Mind (more Mana) | PvE burst; PvP |
| Human | Alliance | Ruthless +1% crit (was 2%); The Human Spirit +10% Spirit (was 5%); Will to Survive removes stuns | Long fights; PvP |
| Skyborne (Alliance) | Alliance | Wind Blessed +2% haste (was 3%); Read Leyline +50% regeneration for 15 seconds, or +100% while Attuned; Walk on Air | Steady haste; travel |
| Orc | Horde | Blood Fury +10% spell power, now on a 2-minute cooldown (was 3); Hardiness. Savage (+1% crit) was removed | PvE burst; new in Forever |
| Troll | Horde | Berserking casting speed now lasts 15 seconds (was 10); Regeneration | PvE burst |
| Undead | Horde | Will of the Forsaken; Touch of the Grave now has a 15-second internal cooldown (was 25) | PvP |
There's no official best race, and Horde Skyborne can't be Mages (WoW Handbook). For raids, Gnome on the Alliance and Orc or Troll on the Horde give the most damage; Undead and Human are the PvP picks. Skyborne's Attuned buff is removed when you enter a raid, so its regeneration value is for questing and dungeons (Kaivax). Our race and class combos guide covers the Orc Mage, and our Skyborne guide covers the new race.
WoW Forever Mage stats by spec
Blizzard hasn't published stat weights for Forever, and the beta capped at level 30, so treat this as a starting order reasoned from the talents above rather than a simulated result.
| Spec | Stat order to start with | Why (talent it comes from) |
|---|---|---|
| Frost | Spell damage > hit > crit > Intellect | Shatter and Ice Lance turn crits on Frozen targets into your biggest hits; Elemental Precision gives only +5% hit |
| Fire | Spell damage > hit > crit > Intellect | Heating Up, Critical Mass, Ignite and Master of Elements all trigger on crits |
| Arcane | Intellect and spell damage > hit > crit > Spirit | Arcane Blast grants 15% of Intellect per stack, Arcane Wrath scales with maximum Mana, and Arcane Mind adds 10% Intellect |
Haste is rare on early gear. Skyborne's Wind Blessed (+2% since October 26) and Troll Berserking are the easy sources (Kaivax). Check each item's tooltip, because some Forever gear carries situational bonuses.
Best professions for a Mage
- Tailoring: you wear cloth, and Forever adds bind-on-pickup crafted pieces. Manaflare Regalia is the new Mage set to check (WoW Handbook).
- Enchanting: pairs with Tailoring because you can disenchant the cloth gear you make. Wands and Wizard Oil are early damage boosts.
- Cooking and First Aid: Forever's Cooking food can carry experience buffs, and bandages save Mana after a bad pull.
Our professions guide compares every pair and the new recipes. Our Merchant's Favor guide explains how to buy recipes with crate turn-ins.
Gear your Mage
Mages wear cloth and use staves, swords, daggers and wands (WoW Handbook). WoW Handbook lists 30 Mage-locked sets, including one new one. Manaflare Regalia's 5-piece bonus raises Frostfire Bolt's chance to trigger Missile Barrage and Fingers of Frost, and its crit while Combustion is up. Arcane Wrath and Arcane Blast both scale with Intellect and Mana now, so Intellect is worth more to Arcane than it was in Classic (our assessment). Our raids guide covers set drops; the first three raids open on December 9.
Advice for alts and returning players
- Classic Mages: stop down-ranking Frostbolt for slows; use Frost Blast at 24 (Kaivax).
- Raid Mages: your Ignite and Improved Scorch stacks are your own now, so you don't need to plan a Scorch rotation around other Mages (WoW Handbook).
- Arcane fans: guides written before October 15 describe the old Arcane Blast. Plan around 4-stack spell damage and Arcane Wrath instead.
- Alts: the Frost start works for questing on any race. Library Books are worth collecting on your main for the Comprehension rewards (WoW Handbook). Our leveling guide covers routes and rested XP, and the dual spec guide covers keeping Frost for questing and Fire or Arcane for groups.
- Skyborne Mages start on Zephras Isle; see our Zephras Isle guide.
- Other casters: compare the Priest guide and the Warlock guide. The WoW Forever hub collects the rest of our class coverage.
