WoW Forever Rogue Guide: Talents, Builds, Weapons, Best Race

THE GUIDE

WoW Forever's Rogue keeps stealth, combo points and poisons, but almost every tree has something new. Assassination gets Mutilate and a poison finisher called Venom. Combat swaps four weapon specializations for one talent and adds one-handed axes. Subtlety gets Thousand Cuts and Ambush outside Stealth. Sap no longer breaks Stealth, and Skyborne Rogues are open to both factions. This WoW Forever Rogue guide covers every baseline change, the talent trees, a build and rotation for each spec, weapon choice, stats, professions and the best race after Blizzard's October 26 racial pass.

Talent data comes from the final beta client as read by WoW Handbook (updated October 24), and tuning from Blizzard's development notes. The game launches on November 4, 2026, so check your tooltips on day one.

Quick summary

  • Sap no longer breaks Stealth, and Distract lowers enemy Stealth detection for 10 seconds without breaking it (WoW Handbook).
  • New 31-point talents: Venom for Assassination and Thousand Cuts for Subtlety. Mutilate is Assassination's 21-point talent: two dagger strikes for 2 combo points, 20% harder on poisoned targets (WoW Handbook).
  • Rogues can use one-handed axes. Hack and Slash replaces four weapon specializations. Axes and swords get a 5% extra-attack chance, daggers and fists get +5% crit, and maces ignore 15% of armor (WoW Handbook; The Forever Era).
  • Poisons last longer: they have more charges and sit alongside a Sharpening Stone. Improved Poisons gives a 50% chance not to use a charge, and Occult Poison II arrives at 60 (WoW Handbook).
  • Combat is the leveling spec, Assassination the raid poison spec and Subtlety the PvP spec. Rogue talents changed little in testing (Kaivax).
  • Race picks shifted on October 26: Human Ruthless fell to 1% crit, Dwarves gained +1% hit, Orc Blood Fury is back to 2 minutes and Troll Berserking lasts 15 seconds (Kaivax).

Learn what changed for every Rogue

Change Forever Classic Source
Sap Doesn't break Stealth; up to 45 seconds on out-of-combat Humanoids Broke Stealth unless talented WoW Handbook
Distract Lowers Stealth detection by 1 level for 10 seconds; doesn't break Stealth Turned enemies only WoW Handbook
Expose Armor 450 armor per combo point (2,250 at 5); doesn't block Sunder Armor Weaker; blocked Sunder WoW Handbook; The Forever Era
Feint Sheds twice the threat Classic value WoW Handbook
Poisons More charges; stack with a Sharpening Stone or Weightstone Shared the slot with stones WoW Handbook
Occult Poison II Trained at 60; +4% magic damage taken per stack, up to 5 Not in Classic WoW Handbook
Axes One-handed axes usable Not usable The Forever Era
Precision Hit with all attacks, including poisons Melee only The Forever Era
Races Skyborne on both factions Not available WoW Handbook; The Forever Era

WoW Handbook notes that enemy players can see the Distract debuff, so "it tells them a Rogue is close." Expose Armor now "matches five Sunder Armors and no longer stops a Warrior from applying Sunder Armor for threat."

Plan your key spells by level

Level Spell (WoW Handbook) Note
10 Sap Keeps you in Stealth
14 Expose Armor Stacks with Sunder
16 Feint Double threat drop
22 Distract Lowers Stealth detection
60 Occult Poison II Counts as Deadly Poison

WoW Handbook lists 28 trainable Rogue spells, and 1 is new: Occult Poison II. It counts as Deadly Poison for every talent and effect that modifies Deadly Poison.

Best Rogue spec in WoW Forever

Spec Strength Weakness Our take
Assassination Malice, Seal Fate, Mutilate, Venom Needs two daggers for Mutilate Raid poison damage
Combat Hack and Slash with any weapon, Blade Flurry, Adrenaline Rush, Flawless Execution Less control Best leveling start
Subtlety Stealth openers, Cutthroat Ambushes, Thousand Cuts, Hemorrhage Weaker sustained damage early PvP

WoW Handbook's Combat start is "straight damage for questing and dungeons."

What the class does well: stealth openers, Sap that now keeps you hidden, strong single-target damage, Kick, Blind and Vanish. What it struggles with: leather armor in melee range, no healing, and Energy that runs dry in long fights. Our tier list covers where Rogue lands.

Build an Assassination Rogue

Talent Row Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) Status
Improved Gouge 1 Gouge +1.5 seconds Moved in from Combat
Remorseless Attacks 1 +40% crit on your next builder after a kill, including Mutilate Changed
Malice 1 +5% crit with attacks and poisons Changed
Ruthlessness 2 Finishers: 60% chance to add a combo point Same
Relentless Strikes 3 Finishers: 20% per combo point to restore 25 Energy Same
Improved Expose Armor 3 Expose Armor −10 Energy; refunds 2 combo points at 5 Changed
Vile Poisons 4 +20% poison damage; 40% dispel resistance Moved in
Cold Blood 4 (16 points) +100% crit on your next Sinister Strike, Backstab, Ambush, Eviscerate or Mutilate Changed
Improved Poisons 4 +10% application; 50% chance not to use a charge Changed
Vigor 5 +10 maximum Energy (now 2 ranks) Changed
Mutilate 5 (21 points) Both weapons, 75% weapon damage plus 17.25 each; +20% vs poisoned; 2 combo points New
Seal Fate 6 Crits from builders add 1 combo point Moved in
Venom 7 (31 points) Finisher: +30% poison damage, +10% application, 9 to 21 seconds New

Starter build to level 20 (11/0/0), WoW Handbook: Malice 5/5, Remorseless Attacks 2/2, Ruthlessness 3/3, Relentless Strikes 1/1. It skips Improved Slice and Dice because "nothing at this level lives long enough to pay for the duration."

Assassination rotation (our assessment): open with Garrote or Cheap Shot, build with Mutilate (two daggers) and let Seal Fate crits add points, keep Slice and Dice up, and spend 5-point finishers on Venom during poison-heavy fights. Our math on finishers: Relentless Strikes gives 20% per combo point, so a 5-point finisher always restores 25 Energy. Ruthlessness adds back 0.6 combo points per finisher on average. Our math on poisons: with Improved Poisons, each charge lasts 2 applications on average, doubling a coating's life.

Build a Combat Rogue

Talent Row Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) Status
Improved Eviscerate 1 +20% Eviscerate damage Moved in
Improved Sinister Strike 1 Sinister Strike −5 Energy Same
Lightning Reflexes 1 +5% dodge Same
Puncturing Wounds 2 Backstab +30% crit, Mutilate +15%; Backstab 45% chance for an extra combo point New (was Improved Backstab)
Precision 2 +3% hit Changed
Endurance 3 Sprint and Evasion cooldowns −60% Changed
Flawless Execution 4 (16 points) Eviscerate −10 Energy New
Dual Wield Specialization 4 +25% off-hand damage Changed
Blade Flurry 5 +20% attack speed and a second target for 15 seconds Changed
Hack and Slash 5 By weapon: axe or sword 5% extra attack; dagger or fist +5% crit; mace ignores 15% armor New
Weapon Expertise 6 Attacks 2% less likely to be dodged or parried Changed
Aggression 6 Sinister Strike, Backstab and Eviscerate +6% Changed
Adrenaline Rush 7 (31 points) +100% Energy regeneration for 15 seconds Same

Starter build to level 20 (0/11/0), WoW Handbook: Improved Sinister Strike 2/2, Improved Eviscerate 3/3, Puncturing Wounds 3/3, Precision 3/3. It skips dodge and parry because "at level 20 nothing in PvE hits hard enough to need them."

Combat rotation (our assessment): keep Slice and Dice up, Sinister Strike to build, Eviscerate at 5 points, and save Blade Flurry and Adrenaline Rush for two-target pulls and bosses. Our math on Eviscerate: Flawless Execution takes 10 Energy off, and the new Grimstitch Armor's 5-piece bonus takes 5 more (WoW Handbook). On Classic's 35-Energy Eviscerate, that's 20 Energy, a 43% saving (Classic cost is general Classic knowledge).

Pick your weapons for Hack and Slash

Main hand Hack and Slash at 5/5 (WoW Handbook) Best with Our take
Sword or one-handed axe 5% chance of an extra attack Sinister Strike Combat Leveling and raids
Dagger +5% crit Backstab, Mutilate, Ambush, Ghostly Strike Assassination and Subtlety
Fist weapon +5% crit Sinister Strike When fists drop
Mace Ignore 15% of armor Sinister Strike vs high-armor targets Bosses with high armor

Ghostly Strike and Hemorrhage hit harder with a dagger in the main hand (180% and 145% weapon damage, against 125% and 100%). Mutilate needs a weapon in each hand (WoW Handbook).

Build a Subtlety Rogue

Talent Row Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) Status
Camouflage 1 Stealth speed penalty −15%; cooldown −6 seconds Changed
Opportunity 1 Backstab, Garrote, Ambush and Mutilate +10% Changed
Setup 2 Combo point after you dodge or fully resist Changed; fixed October 1
Dirty Tricks 2 Sap and Blind 50% cheaper New (was Improved Sap)
Improved Ambush 2 Ambush +45% crit Moved in
Ghostly Strike 3 125% (180% with a dagger), +15% dodge for 7 seconds Changed
Improved Distract 3 +5 yard radius; 2 more levels of lowered detection New
Premeditation 4 (16 points) Adds 2 combo points for 20 seconds Changed
Serrated Blades 4 Ignore 9% armor; Rupture +30% Changed
Hemorrhage 5 100% (145% with a dagger); Rupture +15% from you Changed
Quietus 6 Sinister Strike, Ghostly Strike and Hemorrhage +10% below 35% health New
Cutthroat 6 Backstab: 15% chance your next Ambush doesn't need Stealth New
Thousand Cuts 7 (31 points) Each Rupture tick: next Hemorrhage or Backstab −3 Energy, up to 5 stacks New

Starter build to level 20 (0/0/11), WoW Handbook: Camouflage 3/5, Opportunity 2/2, Setup 2/3, Improved Ambush 3/3, Ghostly Strike 1/1. It notes Setup "leans towards PvP."

Subtlety rotation (our assessment): Premeditation and Ambush from Stealth, keep Rupture ticking for Thousand Cuts, build with Hemorrhage or Backstab, and use Cutthroat procs for an Ambush in the open. Our math on Thousand Cuts: five stacks take 15 Energy off your next Hemorrhage or Backstab. Our math on Cutthroat: at 15% per Backstab, you get an out-of-Stealth Ambush about once every 7 Backstabs (1 ÷ 0.15 ≈ 6.7).

Track the Rogue patch history

Build Rogue changes (Kaivax)
September 24 Sap flags you for PvP when used on a flagged target
October 1 A missed Expose Armor no longer loses all combo points. Setup adds combo points only to the target you dodged or resisted
October 8 Map markers for the quest "Plundering the Plunderers"
October 15 Poisons no longer trigger against targets attacking you. Sap can't trigger weapon procs. Spec swaps no longer keep Energy full. Cold Blood is consumed by a Mutilate crit

The Rogue trees changed less in testing than other classes did, so WoW Handbook's talent table is a good guide to launch.

Compare the leveling methods

Method Speed Downtime Risk Best for
Combat Sinister Strike with sword or axe Fast Low Low Most players
Assassination crit and Remorseless chains Fast Low Medium Players who pull one at a time
Subtlety Sap-and-skip questing Medium Low Low Quest objectives deep in camps
Dungeon groups Fast with a steady group Low Low Group players

This is our assessment from WoW Handbook's build notes. Sap no longer breaking Stealth makes skipping packs easier than in Classic. Our dungeons guide lists group stops by level, and our PvP guide covers battlegrounds.

Best Rogue race in WoW Forever

Race Faction Rogue-relevant racials (values after October 26) Best for
Human Alliance Will to Survive removes stuns; Perception; Ruthless +1% crit (was 2%) PvP
Dwarf Alliance Stoneform: removes bleeds, poisons, diseases, −10% physical damage; Artisan's Precision +1% hit (new) PvP vs Rogues; hit-short raiders
Night Elf Alliance Elune's Light +10% crit for 15 seconds; Shadowmeld; Quickness PvE burst, stealth
Gnome Alliance Eureka!: abilities 10% cheaper and 10% stronger; +5% Energy; Escape Artist PvE and PvP
Skyborne Both Wind Blessed +2% haste (was 3%); +5% vs Elementals; Walk on Air Steady haste
Orc Horde Blood Fury +10% attack power for 15 seconds, 2-minute cooldown (was 3); Hardiness. Savage (+1% crit) removed PvE burst; PvP
Undead Horde Will of the Forsaken; Touch of the Grave (20% chance for Rogues, 15-second cooldown) PvP
Troll Horde Berserking +10% attack speed for 15 seconds (was 10) PvE burst

There's no official best race; 8 races can be Rogues, with Skyborne counted once (The Forever Era). Our picks by goal: Night Elf (Elune's Light, Shadowmeld) or Gnome on the Alliance for raids, Human or Dwarf for PvP; Orc or Troll on the Horde for raids, Undead or Orc for PvP. Blizzard's October 26 pass made Troll's Berserking and Orc's Blood Fury more frequent, which helps both Horde burst picks (Kaivax). Our race and class combos guide and Skyborne guide cover the new race.

Gear your Rogue

Rogues wear leather. WoW Handbook lists 27 Rogue-locked sets, including one new one. Grimstitch Armor cuts Kidney Shot's cooldown by 3 seconds at 3 pieces and gives +36 attack power against Humanoids at 4. At 5, it takes 5 Energy off "Envenom and Eviscerate." Our raids guide covers set drops; the first raids open on December 9.

Rogue stats and professions

Blizzard hasn't published stat weights, so this is a starting order reasoned from the talents above. Forever merges melee, ranged and spell hit into one stat (WoW Handbook), which also covers poisons through Precision.

Spec Start with Why
Combat Hit > Agility > attack power > crit Precision gives only +3% hit; Blade Flurry and Hack and Slash scale with weapon damage
Assassination Hit > Agility > crit > attack power Malice, Seal Fate and Remorseless Attacks pay off on crits; poisons need hit to land
Subtlety Agility > attack power > crit > hit Ambush and Backstab openers lean on crit; PvP fights favor burst

Professions: Skinning and Leatherworking is the natural pair. You wear leather, Forever's trade camps sell Leatherworking patterns for each role, and the Camp Tent tops up Rested XP while you level (WoW-Professions; WoW Handbook). Engineering is the PvP pick for its gadgets. Our professions guide compares the pairs.

Advice for alts and returning players

  • Classic Rogues: stop spending points on Improved Sap; Sap keeps you in Stealth for everyone, and Dirty Tricks just makes it cheaper (WoW Handbook).
  • Raiders: Expose Armor no longer blocks a Warrior's Sunder Armor, so it's back in raid plans (WoW Handbook).
  • Weapon hunters: with Hack and Slash, the best weapon is often just the highest-damage one, including axes.
  • Alts: the Combat start works on any race, and dual spec at 40 lets you keep Subtlety for battlegrounds (our dual spec guide). Hunters and Druids can compare our Hunter and Druid guides, and our Mage guide covers the other crowd-control class.
  • Getting around before 40: Sprint and Endurance cover a lot of ground; riding costs are in our mounts guide. The WoW Forever hub collects the rest of our class coverage.
