Leatherworking is MapleStory Classic World's hide craft, taught by JM From tha Streetz in Kerning City. It turns Leather and monster skins into Processed Leather, then into Thief and Bowman gloves, shoes and hats, plus a weapon, a chair and, since Grand Launch, a crafting station for your house. This MapleStory Classic Leatherworking guide lists every recipe, shows where each material comes from, and prices two routes from craft level 1 to 8. For how the six crafts fit together, see our crafting guide.
Quick summary
- 75 Leatherworking recipes since Grand Launch, from craft level 1 to 8: 3 Processed Leather recipes, 70 pieces of gear, the Red Chair and the new Leatherworking Station (NiaMeowDB). Level 9–10 recipes from the closed test can't be made yet, because crafting still stops at level 8.
- JM From tha Streetz unlocks the craft at level 10 (30 Pigs, 5 Leather). His level 25 quest needs Leatherworking 5 and a crafted Red Chair (MapleStory Quest).
- Processed Leather has three sources: 5 Leather (craft 1), 10 Jr. Necki Skins (craft 4) or 10 Ligator Skins (craft 6) (MapleStory Quest).
- Thief and Bowman gloves aren't in any recorded NPC shop, so Leatherworking is the NPC-side source for them from level 15 to 40 (our check of MapleStory Quest and NiaMeowDB shop lists).
- Our math: about 86,000–115,000 mesos in fees and about 1,000 Leather take you from 1 to 8 on the release EXP table.
Unlock Leatherworking with JM
JM From tha Streetz stands on Victoria Road in Kerning City, at (2034, 1478) (MapleStory Quest; our Kerning City guide).
| Quest | Level | Needs | EXP | Mesos | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| JM From tha Streetz Looking for a Partner | 10 | 30 Pigs, 5 Leather | 188 | 351 | Unlocks Leatherworking |
| JM From tha Streetz in Need of Help (weekly) | 15 | Leatherworking 2; 25 Jr. Neckis, 10 Jr. Necki Skins | 669 | 497 | Leatherworking Kit |
| A Leatherworker in My Own Right! | 25 | Leatherworking 5; 30 Wild Boars, 1 Red Chair | 3,060 | 804 | Armor Crafting Catalyst |
| Not Ready to Go Home Yet (Citizenship) | 27 | Kerning Citizenship Grade 4; after One More Debt to Repay | 3,750 | 862 | 180 contribution |
The quest text for the first one says to hunt "monsters around Kerning City and Henesys to collect Leather" (MapleStory Quest).
Know the level gates
| Craft level | Craft EXP to next | Character level needed | Gear EXP per craft |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 50 | 10 | 20 |
| 2 | 166 | 10 | 40 |
| 3 | 319 | 15 | 60 |
| 4 | 521 | 20 | 80 |
| 5 | 787 | 25 | 100 |
| 6 | 1,138 | 30 | 120 |
| 7 | 1,602 | 35 | 140 |
| 8 | cap at launch | 40 | 160 |
EXP to next is the release table from MapleStory Quest's crafting ladder, where each step is "the last level's times 1.32 plus 100, rounded down." Reaching 8 takes 4,583 craft EXP in total (MapleStory Quest). The wiki's gate is "char_lv = 5 × craft_lv," and EXP earned while you're at the gate "is discarded."

Learn every recipe
Stats and ingredients come from MapleStory Quest. Every gear recipe uses Processed Leather equal to its craft level (1 at level 1, 8 at level 8), except the level 2 Leather Purse (4). The fee equals what an NPC pays for the item.
Hats, the weapon and the chair
| Recipe | Craft Lv | Item | Stats | Fee | Other ingredients |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brown / Green / Red Skullcap | 1 | Lv 5 hat, all | +6 DEF | 300 | 10 Snail Shells (mixed or red), 3 Thread |
| Brown / Green Winter Hat | 2 | Lv 10 Bowman hat | +15 DEF, +1 STR / DEX | 600 | 10 Orange Mushroom Caps / Leaves, 6 Thread |
| Leather Purse | 2 | Lv 12 one-handed blunt | +31 attack | 1,900 | 6 Screws, 6 Thread |
| Red Chair | 5 | Chair | – | 5,000 | 8 Processed Leather, 5 Processed Cloth, 2 Iron Ingots, 3 Red Dye, 20 Screws |
The Red Chair pays only 15 craft EXP (MapleStory Quest), so make it once, for JM's quest. Our recovery guide covers what chairs do.
Craft the Leatherworking Station for your house
Grand Launch gave every craft a station you can place in your home (henesys.gg). NiaMeowDB lists the Leatherworking Station recipe as:
| Recipe | Craft Lv | Ingredients | Fee | Craft EXP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Leatherworking Station | 3 | 10 Processed Leather, 20 Processed Wood, 20 Screws | 100,000 | 60 |
Once placed, it lets you do Leatherworking at home by standing near it, instead of walking to JM in Kerning City. The 100,000-meso fee is more than our whole Route B below, so build it only if you craft often. Processed Wood comes from Woodcrafting (see our Woodcrafting guide) and Screws from Weaponcrafting. You need a house first; our housing guide covers buying one.

Every gear recipe accepts a catalyst. The Leather Purse takes the One-Handed Weapon Crafting Catalyst, and everything else takes the Armor Crafting Catalyst (MapleClassic Wiki). Our gloves and shoes guides compare these with drops.
Get the materials other crafts make
| Material | Made by | Used in | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spool of Thread | Tailoring | Every glove and hat | MapleStory Quest; our Tailoring guide |
| Processed Cloth | Tailoring | Red Chair | MapleStory Quest |
| Screws | Weaponcrafting | Every shoe, Leather Purse, Red Chair, Leatherworking Station | MapleStory Quest; our Weaponcrafting guide |
| Processed Wood | Woodcrafting | Leatherworking Station | NiaMeowDB |
| Bronze, Iron, Mithril, Silver, Gold, Orihalcon Ingots | Smithing | Most Thief gloves, Chain Boots, Scalers, Braces | MapleStory Quest; our Smithing guide |
| Gems (Garnet, Sapphire, Aquamarine and others) | Arcforge | Diros, Savata, Silky, Pierre and Lined shoes | Wiki raw-material lists |
Our assessment: the mob-drop variants (Stirge Wings, Mushroom Caps, Jr. Necki Skins, Curse Eye Tails, Lorang Claws, Drake Skulls, Cursed Dolls) let a solo Thief or Bowman skip Smithing and Arcforge for many slots. Screws are the one input most shoes can't avoid.
Level Leatherworking from 1 to 8
These two routes are our math. They count 3 craft EXP per Processed Leather and assume low-level recipes keep full EXP at higher craft levels, which isn't confirmed. We also assume your character meets each gate, so EXP past a level-up carries into the next level. If it doesn't, add about one craft per level.
Route A: mob-drop recipes at each level
| Craft Lv | Craft | Count | Extra drops |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Skullcap | 3 | 30 Snail Shells |
| 2 | Winter Hat | 4 | 40 Caps or Leaves |
| 3 | Blue Duo or Basic Archer Gloves | 5 | 75 Blue Mushroom Caps |
| 4 | Green Diros | 5 | 100 Green Mushroom Caps |
| 5 | Dark Wolfskin | 7 | 175 Stirge Wings |
| 6 | Green Hunter Boots | 9 | 270 Curse Eye Tails |
| 7 | Green Silky Boots | 10 | 350 Curse Eye Tails |
Totals: 43 gear crafts, 205 Processed Leather (1,025 Leather), 243 thread (25 Animal Fur Bundles), 372 Screws, and about 114,500 mesos in fees, counting 100 per Processed Leather and per thread batch.
Route B: Winter Hats from craft level 2
3 Skullcaps, then 99 Winter Hats (4 + 7 + 11 + 17 + 25 + 35 across levels 2 to 7). Totals: 201 Processed Leather (1,005 Leather), 61 Animal Fur Bundles, 990 Orange Mushroom Caps or Leaves, no Screws, and about 86,500 mesos in fees. Test whether a level 2 recipe still pays 40 EXP at craft level 6 or 7 before you commit.
For comparison, planet-helper's 1–10 estimate is 1,230 Leather and 114 Garnet Ore, with a net cost of 46,320 to 73,293 mesos (planet-helper; our crafting guide).
Craft or buy?
| Item | Craft fee | NPC shop | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brown Skullcap | 300 | 600 at Natasha (Lith Harbor) | Craft |
| Winter Hats | 600 | 1,200 at Sam (Henesys) | Craft |
| Leather Purse | 1,900 + 6 Screws | 3,800 at Karl (Henesys) | Craft if you have Screws |
| Thief and Bowman gloves | 1,800–8,400 | Not in any recorded shop | Craft or trade |
| Lappy, Jack, Chain, Hunter, Silky, Pierre, Lined shoes | 1,500–4,200 | Not in recorded shops. Sam and Don Hwang sell other shoes | Craft for stats |
Prices are community-recorded (MapleStory Quest, NiaMeowDB). Selling crafted gear to an NPC returns exactly the fee (our reading of MapleStory Quest sell values). Our mesos guide covers funding.
For alts and returning players
- Returning from original MapleStory? Thief and Bowman gloves like the Duo, Mischief and Diros used to come from drops and the Free Market. In Classic World, they're Leatherworking recipes (MapleStory Quest).
- Thief alts: our Thief guide pairs Leatherworking with Weaponcrafting. Bowman alts: our Bowman guide pairs it with Woodcrafting.
- Save drops while leveling: Stirge Wings, Curse Eye Tails, Drake Skulls and Cursed Dolls are all recipe inputs. Don't sell them (MapleStory Quest). Our 10–30 meso farming guide shows what Leather and Stirge Wings fetch if you sell instead, and Cursed Dolls come from the Zombie Lupins in our Monkey Forest guide.
- Character gate: a level 30 alt stops gaining craft EXP at Leatherworking 6 (wiki).

What changed for Leatherworking at Grand Launch
Nexon's Grand Launch release notes list JM From tha Streetz as the Leatherworking NPC and open crafting to every character at level 10. For this craft, v1.0.0 (October 21, 2026) changed three things:
| Change | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Leatherworking Station added | Craft 3 recipe for a home station, 100,000 mesos | henesys.gg, NiaMeowDB |
| Housing | Buy a house in Henesys or Kerning City at Citizenship grade Visitor or higher, and place crafting stations in it | Nexon |
| Cap unchanged | Crafting still stops at craft level 8, so the level 9–10 gloves and shoes stay locked | NiaMeowDB |
The gear recipes, fees and Processed Leather recipes in this guide did not change. The fee rise on Lesser scroll recipes (10,000 to 20,000 mesos) affects Arcforge, not Leatherworking, and henesys.gg dates it to Founder's Access rather than Grand Launch. Since v1.0.0, monsters from level 10 to 30 drop more potions (Nexon maintenance notes), which makes the Pig and Ribbon Pig Leather runs cheaper. The MapleStory Classic hub lists every guide for the game.
