MapleStory Classic Controls Guide: Keybinds, Quick Slots, Controller
MapleStory Classic controls: Classic vs Modern (WASD) vs Compact layouts, presets, 12 quick slots, controller setup, HP warnings, Enemy Info.

In this guide 13 sections
Quick summary
- Pick a layout: Nexon offers Classic Style and Modern Style, and "Modern Style supports WASD movement!" (Nexon release notes). The wiki and NiaMeowDB also list a third layout, Compact, for laptops.
- Everything can be rebound: you get three saved preset pages, and a Switch Preset key flips between them (MapleClassic Wiki, NiaMeowDB).
- Quick slots: the bar holds 12. Tick Enable 3 Rows if you only see 8 (wiki, NiaMeowDB).
- Controllers: Xbox, DualShock, and DualSense pads work over USB or Bluetooth, but Enable Controller Support is off by default (Nexon FAQ and release notes).
- Set these first: HP/MP Warning, Enemy Info (name and HP), and screenshot folders, all in Game Options (NiaMeowDB).
Checked against the Founder's Access build on October 13, 2026. Grand Launch is October 21, 2026; see the end of the guide for what may change.
Choose a keyboard layout
| Layout | Movement | Quick slot keys | Best for | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Style (default) | Arrow keys | Insert, Delete, Home, End, Page Up, Page Down | Returning players | Nexon, wiki, NiaMeowDB |
| Modern Style | WASD | Q, W, E, R and 1–4 | Players used to modern PC games | Nexon, NiaMeowDB |
| Compact Style | — | Doesn't use the Insert/Delete/Home cluster | Laptops without those keys | NiaMeowDB, wiki |
The wiki says "the client stores which one is preselected, and it is Classic." It also says "every key can be reassigned afterwards," so your choice is just a starting point.
How to pick: maplestory-classic.com says to "decide early because every quick slot you assign later depends on which keys are still free." If your laptop has no Insert/Home cluster, start with Compact or Modern.
Default keys: the wiki says the default key for each action "is not recorded in the game data," and maplestory-classic.com doesn't list them either. Open the keyboard screen and read the bindings in your client.
Save presets for different jobs
The key configuration screen has three preset pages, each saved separately, with save and undo buttons (wiki). There's also a Default button that restores your original layout and a Delete button that clears one binding.
NiaMeowDB says Switch Preset can be bound to a key, so you can change pages "without reopening the settings window." The wiki suggests keeping "a training layout, a bossing layout and a spare."
Here's our suggested split. It's our own setup advice, not a source recommendation:
| Preset | Suggested use | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Training | Main attack, buffs, HP and MP potions on the easiest keys |
| 2 | Party quests and bosses | Party chat and a pet food key, potions moved to the same spots |
| 3 | Jump quests and travel | Fewer keys, so you don't press attack by accident |
Our jump quest guide explains why a simpler layout helps on long jump sections.
Set up quick slots
The wiki says "the quick slot bar holds twelve slots," and the Enable 3 Rows checkbox changes how they're stacked. NiaMeowDB says the compact panel in the test client showed eight cells, and ticking Enable 3 Rows expanded it to twelve. Maplestory-classic.com says both describe the same bar: "the wiki counts the slots that exist, NiaMeowDB counts what you see before expanding."
Fill it in this order (maplestory-classic.com's steps):
- Open the keyboard screen and find the quick slot area.
- Tick Enable 3 Rows if you want all twelve slots.
- Give each slot a key.
- Drag an item or skill into the slot.
- Press the key with no monster nearby to check that it works.
This priority order is our suggestion, built on maplestory-classic.com's advice to start with recovery items:
| Slot priority | What to put there | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 | HP and MP potions | Maplestory-classic.com says recovery items are "the usual pick" |
| 3–4 | Main attack, second attack | You'll press these most often |
| 5–6 | Buffs (Rage, Haste, Bless, Magic Guard, etc.) | Timed recasts |
| 7–8 | Return Scroll, pet food | Getting out, keeping your pet fed |
| 9–12 | Second-job extras | Fill these after you advance |
Our potions guide covers which potions to put in slots 1–2. Our pets guide covers pet food.
Set up a controller
| Step | Detail | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Use a supported pad | DualSense, DualShock, or Xbox over USB or Bluetooth; "other controllers may not function properly" | Nexon FAQ, release notes |
| Turn it on | Enable Controller Support in Game Options, which is "toggled off by default" | Nexon release notes |
| Adjust sensitivity | A Stick Sensitivity slider is on the Controller tab | NiaMeowDB, wiki |
| Learn the sticks | Left stick moves, right stick controls the cursor | NiaMeowDB, wiki |
| Set quick slot banks | L Quick Slot and R Quick Slot banks on the triggers, plus D-Pad Slots | Wiki |
| Choose a D-pad mode | Auto-Switch, Always Standard, or Always Cross-Style | NiaMeowDB |
NiaMeowDB says controller mode "replaces the keyboard-style row with grouped controller slots, so set the keyboard and controller layouts separately." It also suggests you "keep a keyboard nearby for setup and text chat." If you use a controller, ask your party to keep chat short. Our glossary covers the shorthand.
Mac users: the wiki says the client has a separate Mac keyboard image, so the key screen shows Mac key names. Maplestory-classic.com lists Windows and macOS support through the Nexon Launcher or Steam.
Fix five Game Options first
NiaMeowDB lists five settings to check before your first long session:
| Setting | Options | Our pick | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| HP Warning / MP Warning | Choose the percentage where the bar starts flashing | Set it before long training sessions | NiaMeowDB |
| Enemy Info | None, name, HP, or name and HP (level shown before the name) | Name and HP while you learn the mobs | NiaMeowDB, maplestory-classic.com |
| Screenshots | File format and folder; Burst takes 2–10 shots; Auto can capture every level-up | Turn on Auto for level-ups | NiaMeowDB |
| Graphics and interface | Resolution, windowed mode, VSync, UI size, UI Fade | Turn off UI Fade if fading windows bother you | NiaMeowDB |
| Combat visibility | Your skill opacity, others' skill opacity, damage skin, damage number size, pets behind characters | Lower others' opacity in crowded maps | NiaMeowDB |
Maplestory-classic.com says it couldn't confirm the HP/MP warning thresholds, the graphics options, or the chat options from its own sources. Test the warning by letting a weak Maple Island mob hit you. Our Maple Island guide covers which mobs are there.
Control chat and social requests
NiaMeowDB says you can separately allow or block whispers, chat invites, friend chat, party invites, trade requests, and friend requests. You can also choose whether friend-login notices appear, show message times, and change the chat font size.
| Situation | Suggested setting |
|---|---|
| Crowded launch week | Block trade requests from strangers; keep party invites on |
| Running KPQ | Keep party invites and whispers on; see our KPQ guide |
| Streaming or recording | Turn on message times; block friend-login notices |
Our advice: blocking trade requests from strangers also cuts down on scam attempts, because you only trade with players you've already talked to. Our mesos guide covers how to trade without getting scammed. Nexon's Terms of Service, linked at the end of this guide, cover trading.
Run the 10-minute setup
This order is adapted from maplestory-classic.com's checklist. You can do all of it without leaving Maple Island.
- Open the options window from the on-screen menu. Maplestory-classic.com says the shortcut key isn't recorded.
- Pick Classic, Modern, or Compact on the keyboard screen.
- Tick Enable 3 Rows and fill your quick slots.
- Save the layout to preset 1.
- In Game Options, set the HP/MP Warning, Enemy Info (name and HP), and your screenshot folder.
- If you use a pad, tick Enable Controller Support.
- Walk, attack, and use one quick slot to test. If a key does nothing, check whether two actions share it (maplestory-classic.com).
- After 1st job, revisit your quick slots. Maplestory-classic.com says new skills "mean new items to place in slots."
Compare keyboard and controller
| Input | Strength | Weakness | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic keyboard | The layout old guides and videos use | The Insert/Home cluster is awkward on laptops | Wiki, NiaMeowDB |
| Modern (WASD) | Familiar to modern PC players | Old muscle memory and guides won't match | Nexon, NiaMeowDB |
| Compact | Works on laptops | Maplestory-classic.com couldn't say what else changes | NiaMeowDB, maplestory-classic.com |
| Controller | Couch play | Typing still needs a keyboard; separate slot layout | Nexon, NiaMeowDB |
Avoid the common setup mistakes
- Leaving Controller Support off. A connected pad does nothing until you turn it on (Nexon).
- Thinking you only have 8 quick slots. Tick Enable 3 Rows (wiki, NiaMeowDB).
- Binding two actions to one key. Check the action list after every change (maplestory-classic.com).
- Setting up only the keyboard. The controller layout is separate (NiaMeowDB).
- Never testing the HP warning. Test it once on Maple Island.
- Following an old guide's key layout on Modern Style. Its keys won't match yours.
Set up alts and returning players
- Alts: maplestory-classic.com says an account holds up to 3 characters. Keep one layout across all of them so your habits carry over. Presets help when jobs need different keys.
- Returning players: Classic Style is the default and closest to the old layout (wiki). WASD and controller support are new to this version (Nexon, wiki).
- Next steps: our leveling page and the MapleStory Classic hub have more guides.

What may change at Grand Launch
This guide describes the Founder's Access build as it was on October 13, 2026. Re-check these against Nexon's Grand Launch notes on October 21: whether crafting still stops at craft level 8, whether Forgotten Hollow, Orbis and third jobs stay closed, KPQ channel limits, NPC shop stock, and any Founder's Access-only events or packages mentioned here. Nothing here assumes a closed area or feature will open.
