THE GUIDE

WoW Forever's Warlock is still the class of damage over time, demons and Soul Shards, but the rules around them changed. Curse of Agony and Curse of Doom became Banes, with a slot of their own. Life Tap and your demons scale with your stats, and Firestone and Spellstone stack with Wizard Oil. Each tree gets a new 31-point talent: Wrack, Demonic Pact and Incinerate. This WoW Forever Warlock guide covers every baseline change, the talent trees from the October 15 beta build, a build and leveling rotation for each spec, which demon to use, and the best race after Blizzard's October 26 racial pass.

Talent values come from the beta client (WoW Handbook) and Blizzard's WoW Forever beta development notes. Forever launches on November 4, 2026; check tooltips in game for final tuning.

Quick summary

  • Banes are new: Bane of Agony (level 8) and Bane of Doom (level 60) sit beside Curses, one Bane per Warlock on a target. A damage Bane and a utility Curse can share an enemy (WoW Handbook).
  • Curse of the Elements covers all magic damage: +10% and −75 resistances. Curse of Shadow is gone (WoW Handbook; The Forever Era).
  • New 31-point talents: Wrack (Affliction), Demonic Pact (Demonology) and Incinerate (Destruction). The 16-point talents are Curse of Exhaustion, Fel Domination and Conflagrate (WoW Handbook; The Forever Era).
  • October 15 changed three talents: Grim Reach replaced Malediction, Shadow Mastery doubled to 10% and Destructive Reach now covers only Destruction spells (Kaivax).
  • Affliction is the best Warlock leveling spec: instant Corruption, a Bane and Life Tap mean almost no drinking. Five races can be Warlocks, Troll is new, and Skyborne can't (WoW Handbook).

Best Warlock spec in WoW Forever

Spec Strength Weakness Our take
Affliction Instant Corruption, Life Tap sustain, Soul Siphon, Wrack Ramp-up time on short fights Best leveling start
Demonology Pet damage and health, Demonic Sacrifice with Demonic Pact, Soul Link Pet management Durable solo play
Destruction Fast Shadow Bolt, Conflagrate, Shadow and Flame, Incinerate Mana-hungry, more threat Dungeons and raids

WoW Handbook's Affliction start lets you "chain pulls without stopping to drink." Our tier list covers where Warlock lands.

Warlock strengths and weaknesses

Strengths Weaknesses
A demon tank (Voidwalker) from level 10 Slow to start: Corruption and Banes need time to tick
Life Tap turns health into Mana, now scaling with Spirit Soul Shards to farm for summons, Soulstone and Shadowburn
Fear, Banish, Seduction and Felhunter dispels for control Cloth armor and low health without a pet
A Bane and a Curse on the same target since Forever Destruction burns Mana fast while leveling

Build an Affliction Warlock

Talent Row Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) Status

Suppression 1 +5% hit, −20% threat Changed
Improved Corruption 1 Instant Corruption, +10% damage Changed
Grim Reach 2 Affliction spell range +20% Replaced Malediction, October 15
Soul Harvest 2 Drain Soul kill: +100% Mana regeneration for 10 seconds, all of it while casting New (renamed October 1)
Improved Drains 2 Drain Life, Drain Soul and Wrack +20% New
Pandemic 3 +100% crit damage bonus for your damage over time and drains New
Malevolence 4 +5% Shadow crit New
Nightfall 4 4% chance per tick for an instant Shadow Bolt Changed

Soul Siphon 5 Drains and Wrack +12% per other Affliction effect, up to 36% New
Shadow Mastery 6 +10% Shadow damage Changed, October 15
Wrack 7 (31 points) 36 Shadow damage a second; +10% from your other Shadow damage over time for 6 seconds New

Beta start (11/0/0), WoW Handbook: Improved Corruption 5/5, Improved Life Tap 2/2, Suppression 3/5, Soul Harvest 1/2. "Improved Life Tap turns 20% more health into Mana, which is how a Warlock skips drink breaks entirely."

Our math on Life Tap: at 200 Spirit, one cast converts 624 health into 624 Mana, or 749 with Improved Life Tap. Demonheart Raiment's 5-piece bonus adds another 20% "at no additional Health cost" (WoW Handbook), so 874 if the bonuses add or 899 if they multiply. Our math on Soul Siphon: Corruption, Bane of Agony and Siphon Life on the target reach the 36% cap. Wrack deals 216 damage over its 6 seconds at rank 1.

Build a Demonology Warlock

Talent Row Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) Status
Unholy Power 1 +10% damage for all demons Changed
Demonic Embrace 1 +15% Stamina Changed
Fel Vitality 2 Demon health and Mana +15%; your Mana +15% New
Demonic Energies 2 Pet heals for 15% of your spell damage; gets 100% of Life Tap Mana New

Master Summoner 3 Summons 4 seconds faster, 40% cheaper Moved
Fel Domination 4 (16 points) Next summon 5.5 seconds faster, 50% cheaper Moved
Demonic Brand 4 Searing Pain: half threat; pet's next 6 attacks add 65–68 damage New; threat fixed October 8
Decimation 4 Below 35%: free, 40% faster Soul Fire; Soul Fire cooldown −90% New
Soul Link 5 (21 points) Demon takes 30% of your damage; both deal +3% Changed; fixed October 15
Demonic Knowledge 5 Spell damage +100% of your level while a demon is out New
Master Demonologist 6 Imp +10% Fire, Voidwalker −10% physical damage taken, Succubus or Incubus +10% Shadow, Felhunter −10% magic damage taken Changed
Demonic Pact 7 (31 points) Summoning a different demon no longer cancels Demonic Sacrifice New

Beta start (0/11/0), WoW Handbook: Unholy Power 5/5, Fel Vitality 3/3, Demonic Energies 2/2, Master Summoner 1/2. Demonic Energies "is what keeps a Voidwalker tanking indefinitely."

Our math on Demonic Pact: sacrifice an Imp (+15% Shadow), then summon a Succubus for Master Demonologist (+10% Shadow) and Soul Link (+3%). That's 1.15 × 1.10 × 1.03 = about +30% Shadow damage if they multiply. WoW Handbook confirms the Sacrifice "stacks with Master Demonologist." At level 60, Demonic Knowledge adds 60 spell damage.

Build a Destruction Warlock

Talent Row Max rank effect (WoW Handbook) Status
Destructive Reach 1 Destruction spell range +20% Changed October 15
Improved Shadow Bolt 1 Shadow Bolt crits: +20% Shadow damage taken from you for 12 seconds Changed
Bane 1 Shadow Bolt, Immolate and Incinerate 0.5 seconds faster; Soul Fire 2 seconds Changed
Molten Skin 2 −10% all damage taken New
Cataclysm 2 Destruction spells 10% cheaper Changed
Ruin 3 +100% Destruction crit damage bonus Changed
Shadowburn 3 Instant; a Shard back if the target dies within 8 seconds Changed
Agonizing Flames 4 +10% Destruction damage; Searing Pain +10% crit New
Conflagrate 4 (16 points) Consumes Immolate for Fire damage Changed
Bane of Havoc 5 (21 points) 15% of damage you deal to other targets also hits the marked one New
Fire and Brimstone 5 Conflagrate +25% crit New
Shadow and Flame 6 Conflagrate: +10% Shadow for 20 seconds; Shadowburn: +10% Fire; Conflagrate keeps Immolate New
Incinerate 7 (31 points) Fire damage, +25% on targets with your Immolate New

Beta start (0/0/11), WoW Handbook: Bane 5/5, Destructive Reach 2/2, Cataclysm 3/3, Shadowburn 1/1. Improved Shadow Bolt "is the usual swap for Destructive Reach in groups."

Our math on Shadow and Flame: at 5/5, Conflagrate no longer consumes Immolate. So a Destruction rotation can keep Immolate up for Incinerate's +25% while Conflagrating on cooldown.

Track the Warlock patch history

Build Warlock changes (Kaivax)
September 24 Life Tap tooltip fixed and says it scales with Spirit. Voidwalker Sacrifice scales with 10% of your spell healing
October 1 Drain Soul is interrupted by casting another spell. Hellfire can crit. Soul Harvesting renamed Soul Harvest and now grants its Mana regeneration. Pet Aggressive mode back. New Incubus model
October 8 Your pet is stunned while you summon a new one. Shadow Bolt low ranks retuned. Demonic Brand threat only on Shadow damage
October 15 Grim Reach replaces Malediction (Affliction range +10/20%). Shadow Mastery 2–10% (was 1–5%). Destructive Reach: Destruction spells +10/20%. Soul Link castable on your pet again. Summon Incubus no longer free with the Reagent Economy Legacy perk. Curse of Recklessness can't stack

Our Legacy system guide covers the Reagent Economy perk.

Compare the leveling methods

Method Speed Downtime Risk Best for
Affliction with Corruption, Bane of Agony and Life Tap Fast Very low Low Most players
Demonology behind a Voidwalker Medium Very low Very low Hardcore and careful players
Destruction Shadow Bolt from range Fast kills Higher; more Mana Medium Dungeon groups
Multi-target damage over time on packs Fast Low Medium Experienced players

This is our assessment from WoW Handbook's build notes.

Warlock leveling rotation and pets

Levels Demon Pull
1–9 Imp Send the Imp, then Immolate, Corruption (from level 4) and Shadow Bolt
10 onward Voidwalker, from your class quest Let the Voidwalker take the hit, apply Corruption and Bane of Agony, finish with a wand or Drain Life
Demonology Voidwalker, or an Imp sacrificed for +15% Shadow Same, plus Soul Fire when Decimation makes it free
Destruction Imp or Voidwalker Immolate, then Shadow Bolt; Shadowburn just before the kill to get the Shard back; Conflagrate between Immolates

A wand is the cheapest finisher at any level and saves Mana for the next pull. Keep Demon Skin or Demon Armor up for its health regeneration. Use Drain Soul on the last mob of a pull when you need Shards, since its Shard chance rises with every tick. Our WoW Forever leveling guide covers routes and rested XP, and the Ruins of Lordaeron guide covers one of the first new dungeons a Horde Warlock will see. Our dungeons guide lists group stops by level, and our PvP guide covers battlegrounds.

Choose your race

Blizzard made a final racial pass on October 26–27, after the beta closed, and several changes hit Warlocks directly (Kaivax). Race rankings written before then rely on numbers that no longer exist.

Race Faction Warlock-relevant racials October 26–27 change Best for
Human Alliance Will to Survive removes stuns; The Human Spirit; Ruthless (crit) Human Spirit now +10% Spirit (was 5%), so more Life Tap; Ruthless cut to +1% crit (was 2%) PvP; Affliction sustain
Gnome Alliance Eureka! (a short damage cooldown for non-periodic spells); Expansive Mind (more Mana); Escape Artist None Destruction
Orc Horde Blood Fury; Command; Hardiness; Shatter Curse Command re-added: +5% Warlock pet damage. Blood Fury cooldown 2 min (was 3). Savage (+1% crit) removed Demonology; PvE burst
Undead Horde Will of the Forsaken; Touch of the Grave Touch of the Grave internal cooldown 15 sec (was 25) PvP
Troll Horde Berserking; Beast Slaying Berserking lasts 15 sec (was 10) Destruction burst; new in Forever

Racial lists come from The Forever Era and WoW Handbook. Our reading after the pass: Orc gains the most for Demonology, since Command boosts every demon. Human's doubled Spirit bonus feeds Life Tap for Affliction. Eureka! doesn't affect damage over time, so Gnome suits Destruction more than Affliction. Our race and class combos guide covers the new Troll Warlock.

Gear your Warlock

Warlocks wear cloth and use staves, swords, daggers and wands (WoW Handbook). WoW Handbook lists one new Warlock set. Demonheart Raiment cuts Banish's cast by 1.5 seconds at 3 pieces and adds damage against Demons at 4. At 5, it raises Life Tap's Mana by 20% at no extra health cost. Firestone and Spellstone now stack with Wizard Oil, so carry both stones (our assessment). Our raids guide covers set drops.

Stats: Forever merges spell and melee hit into one stat, and crit too (WoW Handbook). Blizzard hasn't published stat weights, so read the talents. Affliction's Pandemic and Destruction's Ruin both double crit damage, so crit matters to both specs once you have enough hit. Spirit is now an offensive stat for every Warlock, because Life Tap converts 100% of it.

Professions: Tailoring and Enchanting are the classic Warlock pair: you craft your own cloth upgrades and disenchant the leftovers. Our professions guide covers Forever's new recipes.

Advice for alts and returning players

  • Classic Warlocks: you no longer choose between Curse of Agony and Curse of Elements; the Bane and the Curse fit on the same target (WoW Handbook).
  • Raid Warlocks: Curse of the Elements now covers Shadow too, and Curse of Shadow is gone, so one Warlock's curse covers every caster (The Forever Era).
  • Shard farmers: Drain Soul's Shard chance rises each tick, so channel it longer on tough targets (WoW Handbook).
  • Alts: the Affliction start works on any race. Other casters can compare our Mage and Priest guides, and hybrid players our Shaman guide.
  • Legacy planners: the Reagent Economy perk changes how many reagents you farm; see the Legacy guide.

FAQ

What is a Bane in WoW Forever?

A new debuff type. Bane of Agony and Bane of Doom were Curses in Classic; as Banes they have their own slot, so a Warlock can put one Bane and one Curse on the same target (WoW Handbook).

What is the best Warlock spec for leveling in WoW Forever?

Affliction. Instant Corruption, Bane of Agony, Improved Life Tap and a Voidwalker let you chain pulls with almost no drinking.

What is the best race for Warlock in WoW Forever?

After Blizzard's October 26 pass, Orc for Demonology (Command now adds 5% pet damage) and Human for Affliction (Human Spirit now adds 10% Spirit for Life Tap). Troll's longer Berserking suits Destruction.

Does Life Tap scale with Spirit?

Yes. It converts 424 plus 100% of your Spirit at its top rank (WoW Handbook).

What does Demonic Pact do?

It's Demonology's 31-point talent: summoning a different demon no longer cancels Demonic Sacrifice, so the Sacrifice buff stacks with Master Demonologist (WoW Handbook).
