Tailoring is MapleStory Classic World's cloth craft. Francois teaches it in Ellinia. It makes Processed Cloth and Spool of Thread, and from those, hats, jeans, capes and nearly every Magician glove and shoe from level 10 to 40. This MapleStory Classic Tailoring guide lists all 52 recipes you can make in the live game, including the Sewing Machine added at Grand Launch, explains where each material comes from and prices two routes from craft level 1 to 8. For how all six crafts fit together, see our crafting guide.
Quick summary
- 52 Tailoring recipes you can craft, from craft level 1 to 8: the 51 Founder's Access recipes plus the Sewing Machine house station from Grand Launch. Crafting still stops at 8, so eight level 9–10 recipes (Tablecloth cloth, Penance gloves, Goldwind Shoes) stay locked (NiaMeowDB).
- Two base materials: Processed Cloth (10 Pig's Ribbons, 10 Leaves or 5 Animal Fur Bundles) and Spool of Thread (1 Animal Fur Bundle makes 10), each 100 mesos to craft (MapleStory Quest, wiki).
- Every gear recipe gives 20 craft EXP per craft level, from 20 at level 1 to 160 at level 8, and you need character level 5 × the craft level to keep gaining (NiaMeowDB).
- Shoes from craft level 5 up need Screws from Weaponcrafting, and most gloves need gems from Arcforge (MapleStory Quest).
- Our math: about 92,000–142,000 mesos in fees and 2,600–3,400 Pig's Ribbons take you from 1 to 8 on the release EXP table, using only Tailoring materials.
Unlock Tailoring with Francois
Francois stands in Ellinia. His three quests open and advance the craft (MapleStory Quest, Public Release):
| Quest | Level | Needs | EXP | Mesos | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Francois in Need of an Apprentice | 10 | 30 Dark Stumps, 20 Leaves | 188 | 351 | Unlocks Tailoring |
| Francois in Need of Help (weekly) | 15 | Tailoring 2; 25 Green Mushrooms, 10 Spools of Thread | 669 | 497 | Tailoring Kit |
| A Tailor in My Own Right! | 25 | Tailoring 5; 30 Wild Boars, 1 Red Starry Bandana | 3,060 | 804 | Armor Crafting Catalyst |
MapleStory Quest marks the weekly as "weekly rotation · 1 of 6," and NiaMeowDB's crafting page reports that the six masters' level 15 quests share one weekly limit: turning in Francois's makes the other five wait for the reset. The Tailoring Kit it pays raises crafting EXP by 10% for 15 minutes, so open it right before a long crafting session. NiaMeowDB marks the shared limit as player reported. Dark Stumps are on the Ellinia and Perion roads. See our Ellinia guide for where Francois stands.
Know the level gates
| Craft level | Craft EXP to next | Character level needed | Recipe EXP at this level |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 50 | 10 | 20 |
| 2 | 166 | 10 | 40 |
| 3 | 319 | 15 | 60 |
| 4 | 521 | 20 | 80 |
| 5 | 786 | 25 | 100 |
| 6 | 1,138 | 30 | 120 |
| 7 | 1,602 | 35 | 140 |
| 8 | cap at launch | 40 | 160 |
EXP to next and the character gate come from NiaMeowDB's crafting EXP table: reaching craft level 8 takes 4,582 craft EXP in total, and each craft level needs character level 5 × that level, with a floor of 10. At the gate, the bar parks at 100% and any extra EXP is discarded. Reaching the next character level doesn't tick the craft level over by itself; you need one more craft. So don't over-craft before you level.
Make the base materials
| Recipe | Lv | Ingredients | Fee | Craft EXP | Makes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Processed Cloth | 1 | 10 Pig's Ribbons | 100 | 3 | 1 |
| Processed Cloth | 1 | 10 Leaves | 100 | 3 | 1 |
| Processed Cloth | 1 | 5 Animal Fur Bundles | 100 | 3 | 1 |
| Spool of Thread | 1 | 1 Animal Fur Bundle | 100 | 3 | 10 |
Where to farm:
- Pig's Ribbon drops from Ribbon Pigs. Leaves come from the Stump maps. Francois's first quest pairs 30 Dark Stump kills with 20 Leaves (MapleStory Quest). See our Henesys fields guide for pig maps.
- Animal Fur Bundle drops "only" from Pigs (about 1 in 42) and Ribbon Pigs (about 1 in 20) (MapleClassic Wiki, community-recorded). MapleStory Quest has no drop source recorded.
Our math: making cloth from fur costs 5 bundles, which is 50 spools' worth. Use Ribbons or Leaves for cloth, and save fur for thread.
Cloth has buyers outside Tailoring. NiaMeowDB counts 53 recipes that use Processed Cloth. Besides Tailoring gear, that includes housing items from other crafts: the Rustic Bed (Smithing), the Cherry Bed and the two Relaxer chairs (Woodcrafting) and the Red Chair (Leatherworking). Spare cloth is easy to sell to friends furnishing a house; see our housing guide.

The Sewing Machine (Grand Launch)
| Recipe | Craft Lv | Ingredients | Fee | Craft EXP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sewing Machine | 3 | 5 Iron Ingots, 5 Bronze Ingots, 5 Processed Cloth, 10 Processed Wood, 20 Screws | 100,000 | 60 |
The Sewing Machine is a home item: place it in your house and you can do Tailoring there by standing next to it (NiaMeowDB item page). At 100,000 mesos for 60 EXP it's a convenience, not a leveling recipe, and it needs ingots from Smithing, wood from Woodcrafting and Screws from Weaponcrafting.
Every equipment recipe accepts the Armor Crafting Catalyst, which can change the finished item's bonus stats (MapleClassic Wiki). Our gloves guide, shoes guide and capes guide compare these with drops and shop items.
Get the materials other crafts make
| Material | Made by | Used in | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screws | Weaponcrafting (1 Bronze + 1 Iron Ingot gives 10) | All Wind, Magic, Salt and Moon Shoes; Sewing Machine | NiaMeowDB; our Weaponcrafting guide |
| Processed Wood | Woodcrafting (10 Tree Branches, or 5 Firewood, Seedlings or Wooden Boards) | Sewing Machine | NiaMeowDB; our Woodcrafting guide |
| Silver / Gold Ingot | Smithing (5 ore each) | Silver Wind, White Magic, Gold Moon Shoes | NiaMeowDB; our Smithing guide |
| Aquamarine, Garnet, Sapphire, Opal and other gems; Moon Rock; Diamond | Arcforge, one ore per gem | Gloves, shoes, capes | NiaMeowDB; our Arcforge guide and ore guide |
| Dyes | Grocers, 1,000 mesos each | Jeans, Starry Bandanas | MapleStory Quest shop lists |
Our assessment: a Magician who pairs Tailoring with Arcforge (the pairing planet-helper recommends) covers every glove. The shoe line also needs a Weaponcrafter friend or the Free Market for Screws.
Level Tailoring from 1 to 8
These two routes are our math. They assume every craft gives its listed EXP, including 3 per cloth and per thread batch, and that low-level recipes keep full EXP at higher craft levels. That second point isn't confirmed. We also assume your character meets each gate, so EXP past a level-up carries into the next level. If it doesn't, add about one craft per level.
Route A: craft your current level's cheapest thread recipe
| Craft Lv | Craft | Count |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Bandana | 2 |
| 2 | Apprentice Hat | 3 |
| 3 | Lemona | 5 |
| 4 | Jeans | 5 |
| 5 | Starry Bandana | 6 |
| 6 | Lutia | 8 |
| 7 | Noel | 9 |
Totals: 38 gear crafts, 258 Processed Cloth (2,580 Pig's Ribbons or Leaves), 552 thread (56 Animal Fur Bundles), and about 142,000 mesos in fees for gear, cloth and thread. Add 28,000 mesos of dyes for the Jeans and Bandanas, and 82 gems (5 Aquamarine, 32 for Lutia, 45 for Noel) from Arcforge. You also end up with 38 wearable items to use or sell.
Route B: Apprentice Hats from craft level 2 on
| Craft Lv | Hats |
|---|---|
| 2 → 3 | 3 |
| 3 → 4 | 6 |
| 4 → 5 | 10 |
| 5 → 6 | 15 |
| 6 → 7 | 21 |
| 7 → 8 | 30 |
Totals: 2 Bandanas plus 85 hats, about 91,800 mesos in fees, 344 Processed Cloth (3,440 Ribbons), 52 Animal Fur Bundles, and 850 Snail Shells or Mushroom Caps, with no gems or Screws. It's cheaper and simpler, but it only works if a level 2 recipe still pays 40 EXP at craft level 7. Test it on a few crafts before you farm 3,400 Ribbons.
Planet-helper's own 1–10 total for Tailoring is 1,708 Animal Fur Bundles, for a net of 69,970 to 193,028 mesos, depending on the route (planet-helper; our crafting guide). Their route uses fur for cloth. Ours uses Ribbons, so fur needs drop by about 97%.
Craft or buy?
| Item | Craft fee | Shop price | Shop | Our take |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Apprentice Hats | 600 | 1,200 | Serabi (Ellinia) | Craft while leveling |
| Bandanas, Ghetto Beanies | 600 | 1,200 | Don Hwang (Kerning City) | Craft |
| Wind Shoes | 1,500 + Screws | 4,500 | Serabi | Craft if you have Screws |
| Mage gloves (Lemona to Arten) | 1,800–8,400 | Not sold | – | Craft-only from NPCs |
| Magic, Salt, Moon Shoes | 1,800–4,200 | Not sold | – | Craft-only from NPCs |
Shop prices are community-recorded (MapleStory Quest, NiaMeowDB). "Not sold" means neither Serabi nor Don Hwang's recorded list includes the item. Selling crafted gear to an NPC returns exactly the fee, so you lose the materials (our reading of MapleStory Quest's sell values). Our mesos guide covers better ways to fund crafting.
For alts and returning players
- Returning from original MapleStory? Crafting didn't exist for these items. Mage gloves came from drops and the Free Market. In Classic World, Lemona, Mesana and Arten are Tailoring recipes (MapleStory Quest).
- Non-Magician alts: Tailoring still makes Bandanas, Jeans, Ghetto Beanies and the four Justice Capes, which any job can wear (MapleStory Quest). It makes no tops, and the Jeans are its only bottoms, so buy the rest of each job's body armor from the shops in our tops and bottoms guide.
- Character gate: a level 30 alt can't gain EXP past craft level 6, so match your crafting to your level (NiaMeowDB).
- New accounts: a fresh account can't trade until 24 hours after one of its characters reaches level 15 (Nexon), so plan to farm your own Ribbons and fur before you can buy them.
- Stockpile Ribbons early. Ribbon Pigs are a level 10 mob, and every Tailoring recipe uses cloth (MapleStory Quest; our Magician guide).

What changed for Tailoring at Grand Launch
Grand Launch (v1.0.0, October 21, 2026) left the 51 gear and material recipes above as they were and kept the craft level 8 cap. What changed, per Nexon's Grand Launch release notes, the maintenance notes and henesys.gg's update notes:
- Housing arrived, with a Tailoring station. Every craft now makes a station for your house; Tailoring's is the Sewing Machine (above). Citizens of Henesys or Kerning City at the Visitor grade or higher can buy a house with mesos.
- Cloth demand went up. Beds, Relaxers and the Red Chair from other crafts all take Processed Cloth.
- Potions drop more often from level 10–30 monsters, which covers the Pigs, Ribbon Pigs, Stumps and Green Mushrooms you farm for Tailoring.
- Trading rules tightened: new accounts are trade-locked until 24 hours after a character reaches level 15, and Nexon's Debt System (from October 22) blocks trading for accounts caught in real-money trading.
From October 28 to November 18 the Halloween Orange Slimes also wander Ellinia, where Francois stands. Our patch notes tracker lists every update, and the MapleStory Classic hub gathers every guide and service for the game.
FAQ
Where do I learn Tailoring in MapleStory Classic?
From Francois in Ellinia, at level 10. Bring 30 Dark Stumps' worth of kills and 20 Leaves (MapleStory Quest).
What is the max Tailoring level?
Craft level 8, unchanged at Grand Launch. The level 9 and 10 recipes are in the data but can't be crafted yet (NiaMeowDB).
How do I make Processed Cloth?
Craft 10 Pig's Ribbons, 10 Leaves or 5 Animal Fur Bundles at Tailoring 1, for 100 mesos. Animal Fur Bundles drop from Pigs and Ribbon Pigs, so save them for thread (NiaMeowDB, MapleClassic Wiki).
Can Tailoring make Magician robes?
No. There are no robe or overall recipes in the launch data. Buy them from Serabi in Ellinia (MapleStory Quest).
Why is my Tailoring EXP stuck at 100%?
You've hit the character-level gate: craft level N needs character level 5 × N. Level up, then craft once more to tick over; EXP earned while parked is lost (NiaMeowDB).
How much does Tailoring 1 to 8 cost?
By our math on the release EXP table, about 92,000 to 142,000 mesos in fees, plus about 2,600–3,400 Ribbons and 52–56 Animal Fur Bundles.
