Monkey Forest and the Forest of Evil are the Zombie Lupin and Malady maps south of Ellinia, and they cover training from the mid-30s into the 50s. This MapleStory Classic Monkey Forest guide walks the route from Ellinia, compares all six maps and their Tree Dungeons, lists every monster with its accuracy target, covers the Cursed Doll and Curse Eye Tail quests, and explains who should train here after Grand Launch.
Quick summary
- Route: Ellinia → The Field South of Ellinia → The Forest of Wisdom → Monkey Forest I → Monkey Forest II → The Forest of Evil I → The Forest of Evil II. Each Monkey Forest map also has a side Tree Dungeon (MapleStory Quest).
- Monkey Forest II is the main 40–45 map, with 25 Zombie Lupin and 10 Lupin spawns. NiaMeowDB's ceiling for a full party there is about 1.42 million EXP/hr.
- The Tree Dungeons are quieter Zombie Lupin maps, with 26 Zombie Lupins and 4–5 Curse Eyes each. planet-helper counts 18 at once in both.
- The Forest of Evil II holds 23 Maladies (level 55, 167 EXP) and 16 Zombie Lupins. Neither leveling guide we checked ranks it.
- Maladies and Zombie Lupins are holy weak, which makes this a Cleric area. Maladies have 0 weapon defense, so physical classes do well too (NiaMeowDB).
Walk the route from Ellinia
| Step | Map | Connects to (MapleStory Quest) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Field South of Ellinia | Ellinia, The Forest of Wisdom (NPC Estelle) |
| 2 | The Forest of Wisdom | Monkey Forest I, Downstairs at the Forest, The Forest South of Ellinia |
| 3 | Monkey Forest I | Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest I; Monkey Forest II |
| 4 | Monkey Forest II | Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest II; The Forest of Evil I |
| 5 | The Forest of Evil I | The Forest of Evil II (dead end) |
The Tree Dungeons are Hidden Street maps. Each connects only back to its Monkey Forest map (MapleStory Quest; NiaMeowDB). If you die anywhere on this route, you respawn in Ellinia (NiaMeowDB). The first two maps are covered in our Ellinia South guide, and the town in our Ellinia guide.
Potions: Len the Fairy at the Ellinia Department Store sells (NiaMeowDB launch prices):
- Orange Potion 150 mesos
- White Potion 350 mesos
- Magic Potion 500 mesos
- Blue Potion 220 mesos
NiaMeowDB counts 5 portals from Monkey Forest II to the store and 6 from Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest II.
Compare all six maps
Spawns and mob rates come from MapleStory Quest. EXP per clear is our sum of every spawn's EXP.
| Map | Points | Spawns | Respawn | Mob rate (CoT2 → Public) | EXP per clear (ours) | Level fit |

| Monkey Forest I | 23 | 14 Lupin, 9 Green Mushroom | 7.56 sec | Unchanged | ~1,280 | 34–38 |
| Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest I | 31 | 26 Zombie Lupin, 5 Curse Eye | 7.56 sec | Unchanged | ~2,630 | 38–44 |
| Monkey Forest II | 35 | 25 Zombie Lupin, 10 Lupin | 7.56 sec | Unchanged | ~2,980 | 39–45 |
| Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest II | 30 | 26 Zombie Lupin, 4 Curse Eye | 7.56 sec | Unchanged | ~2,570 | 39–45 |
| The Forest of Evil I | 26 | 15 Malady, 11 Zombie Lupin | Malady 60 sec, Zombie Lupin 7.56 sec | ×0.7 → ×0.9 | ~3,480 | 48–55 |
| The Forest of Evil II | 39 | 23 Malady, 16 Zombie Lupin | Malady about 60 sec, Zombie Lupin 7.56 sec | Unchanged (×1.0) | ~5,270 | 50–58 |
Other rankings:
- planet-helper:
- Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest I: 18 at once, 1,527 EXP per clear, 5 portals to a shop.
- Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest II: 18 at once, 1,540 EXP per clear, 6 portals.
- Monkey Forest II: 17 at once, 1,445 EXP per clear, 5 portals.
- NiaMeowDB (ceiling with a full party of six):
- Monkey Forest II: about 1,416,667 EXP/hr (mob rate ×0.8).
- The Forest of Evil II: about 1,455,678 EXP/hr, limited by the Maladies' one-minute respawn.
- The Forest of Evil I: about 607,582 EXP/hr (×0.9).
- It calls Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest II a "Hidden Street alternative that fewer players know about."
NiaMeowDB's model fills 75% of a map's spawn points for one player, adds 5% per extra player and reaches 100% at six, so a solo player sees about three quarters of the numbers above. These are ceilings that assume instant kills, not measured rates.

More on hit rates is in our accuracy guide.

Train the Forest of Evil in your 50s
The Forest of Evil II packs 23 Maladies and 16 Zombie Lupins onto 39 points. That's about 5,270 EXP per full clear by our math, the highest of any map in this guide, but the Maladies take about a minute to return, so the first clear is worth far more than the ones after it. That's more points than Golem's Temple III (23), and each Malady has about 58% of a Stone Golem's HP (2,998 vs 5,134, NiaMeowDB). Our take: physical attackers and Clerics who can one- or two-hit Maladies should try it before Golem's Temple. Maladies fly, so plan for mobs drifting across platforms.
Split the forest in a party
Our party plan, based on the spawn counts above:
| Party | Setup |
|---|---|
| Duo, 40–45 | One player on Monkey Forest II's upper floors, one in its Tree Dungeon; meet at the portal to restock |
| Trio with a Cleric, 50+ | Cleric on Forest of Evil II's middle platforms against the flying Maladies; physical attackers clear Zombie Lupins below |
| Quest group, 36+ | Rotate the two Tree Dungeons for Cursed Dolls; Curse Eyes give Curse Eye Tails on the side |
Respawns are about 7.56 seconds for everything except Maladies, which take about a minute on both Forest of Evil maps (MapleStory Quest, NiaMeowDB). Once the Maladies are down, clear the Zombie Lupins and swap maps or channels instead of waiting. See our training guide for party capacity rules.
Compare Monkey Forest with other 40s maps
| Level | Monkey Forest pick | Alternatives | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 36–40 | Tree Dungeon, Monkey Forest I | Florina Beach Lorang maps | NiaMeowDB calls the Lorang maps the late-30s standout |
| 41–45 | Monkey Forest II | Hot Sand, Monkey Swamp III, Kerning Subway Line 1 <Area 3> | planet-helper ranks Hot Sand first for 41–45 |
| 43–47 | Monkey Forest II | Excavation Site Remains (Skeledog, Lv 44), new at Grand Launch | See our Excavation Site guide |
| 50–58 | The Forest of Evil II | Dangerous Croko II, Golem's Temple III | NiaMeowDB's party ceiling for Forest of Evil II is slightly above Monkey Forest II's |
Florina details are in our Florina Beach guide, golem maps in our Golem's Temple guide, and the subway's Wraith maps in our Kerning Subway guide. If you train here for mesos, our 30–45 meso farming guide prices the Zombie Lupin and Curse Eye drops.
Avoid these mistakes
- Bringing fire or ice to the Forest of Evil. Maladies resist both.
- Using poison on Curse Eyes. They're poison strong.
- Ignoring the Tree Dungeons when Monkey Forest II is busy. They hold 26 Zombie Lupins each.
- Fighting Maladies under accuracy. You need 129 at level 50.
- Selling Cursed Dolls and Curse Eye Tails early. Several quests use them.
If you're making alts or coming back
- Magician alts start in Ellinia, so Monkey Forest is right on the way. Clerics stay here longest.
- Jump quest fans: the Forest of Patience starts from Ellinia too. See our jump quests guide.
- Returning players: Malady EXP dropped in the Public Release. Recheck old charts against the 167 value. NiaMeowDB also records Malady's HP falling from 3,158 to 2,998 and its avoid rising from 32 to 33 between the closed test and launch.
- Don't confuse the two Maladies. The Halloween event NPC called Malady stands in Henesys and Kerning City, not in the Forest of Evil; see our Halloween event guide.

What changed in Monkey Forest at Grand Launch
Grand Launch (v1.0.0, October 21, 2026) left these six maps and their monsters as described above. These changes from Nexon's maintenance notes and release notes still matter here:
| Change | Effect in Monkey Forest |
|---|---|
| Windia expanded to 40 channels | Monkey Forest II and the Tree Dungeons are easier to find empty |
| Excavation Site added off Perion | Skeledogs (Lv 44) and Mummydogs (Lv 47, Holy weak) compete with Monkey Forest II and The Forest of Evil for Clerics |
| Magician Improved MP Recovery raised to +10–25% | Clerics spend less on Blue Potions on long Zombie Lupin sessions |
| Lie Detector Test (citizen shop) | Report suspected bots in the Tree Dungeons; see our bots guide |
| Halloween event (October 28 to November 18) | Ronnie in the Tree Tunnel north of Ellinia receives one of Malady's candy pouches, and every monster here can drop Halloween Candies |
The potion drop buff covers monsters from level 10 to 30, so it doesn't reach these level 33–55 monsters. Crafting still stops at craft level 8, and Orbis and 3rd job remain closed, so Victoria Island's 40s and 50s maps stay busy. The MapleStory Classic hub lists every guide for the game.
