THE GUIDE

Checked against v1.0.0 on October 29, 2026.

The best class in MapleStory Classic World right now is the Fighter, with the Page close behind. This MapleStory Classic tier list ranks all ten second jobs with one rule, written out below. It uses level 70 damage, MP and survival figures from the community database NiaMeowDB, plus three checks we score ourselves from the skill tooltips: mobility, party tools and attack reach. It doesn't copy anyone's tier letters. Below the tiers you'll find the best job for mobbing, bossing, parties and a tight meso budget, because the overall winner isn't the best at everything.

This covers the official MapleStory Classic World. Modern MapleStory, MapleStory Worlds and private servers have jobs and skills Classic World doesn't, so their tier lists don't apply.

Quick summary

  • Best class overall: Fighter (S). It has the top area damage and the best damage per MP of all ten jobs at level 70, and Rage buffs the party's attack.
  • Page is also S tier. It's in the top three for area damage, damage per MP and survival.
  • Best bossing class: Bandit. Savage Blow has the highest single-target damage of any second job (5,469 per second at level 70). Assassin is second.
  • Best party and budget class: Cleric (A). It's last for raw damage but first for party tools, mobility and magic survival, and it's the cheapest job to run.
  • Ice/Lightning Wizard is B tier on these numbers. Thunder Bolt hits six monsters, but it ranks seventh for area damage and eighth for damage per MP against a neutral target.

Know the four jobs and 10 second-job paths

Everyone starts as a Beginner on Maple Island, takes first job at level 10 and second job at level 30 (Nexon's Grand Launch release notes). There's no Pirate and no third job, and the level cap is 100.

Job Instructor and town Second-job paths (Lv 30) Main stat Weapons
Warrior Dances with Balrog, Perion Fighter, Page, Spearman STR Swords, axes, blunt weapons, spears, polearms
Magician Grendel the Really Old, Ellinia Fire/Poison Wizard, Ice/Lightning Wizard, Cleric INT Wands and staves
Bowman Athena Pierce, Henesys Hunter, Crossbowman DEX Bows, crossbows
Thief Dark Lord, Kerning City Assassin, Bandit LUK Claws with stars, daggers

With no third job, your second job is your endgame for now, so this ranking looks at level 70, the top of second job's useful range.

How this MapleStory Classic tier list is ranked

Each job gets a rank from 1 (best) to 10 on eight measures. We add the eight ranks into one total, and the lowest total wins. Every measure counts the same, so no measure is picked to suit a favorite.

Five measured numbers come from NiaMeowDB's level 70 comparison (class pages and DPS table, read October 29, 2026). It models one realistic level 70 build per job against a monster with 0 weapon and 0 magic defense and no element:

  1. Single-target DPS: the job's best one-target attack.
  2. Area DPS: the job's best attack at its full target cap. Cleric and Assassin have no area attack, so they share ninth.
  3. Damage per MP: how far each potion goes.
  4. Physical EHP: how much physical damage the build survives against level 70 Tauromacis.
  5. Magic EHP: the same against magic damage.

Three checks we score ourselves from the launch skill tooltips on NiaMeowDB:

  1. Mobility: Teleport (all three Magicians) scores 3, Haste (both Thieves) 2, Rush (all three Warriors) 1, and no movement skill (both Bowmen) 0.
  2. Party tools: one point per skill that buffs the party or weakens a group of monsters. Cleric has Heal and Bless, both Wizards have Meditation and Slow, Fighter has Rage, Page has Threaten, and both Thieves have Haste. Hunter, Crossbowman and Spearman have none before third job.
  3. Reach: 3 for attacks that reach 400 px or more (bows and crossbows reach 420 px with Eye of Amazon, stars 400 px with Keen Eyes), 2 for Magician spells, and 1 for melee.

Tiers (total of the eight ranks; lower is better): S is 34 or less, A is 35 to 40, B is 41 to 48, and C is 49 or more. Tied jobs share the better rank.

What this leaves out. The model ignores healing, potions and element weaknesses, which add 25% to a Magician's spell on a weak monster. A neutral 0-defense target is fair to every job, but real maps aren't neutral, and the sections below show where that changes the picture.

MapleStory Classic job tier list (level 70)

DPS is damage per second at level 70. Bandit's figure leaves out Steal's short Attack Power buff. A Fighter or Page with a one-handed weapon and a scrolled Gold Ancient Shield rises to about 7,890 and 8,130 physical EHP, at a cost of about 8% and 18% of single-target damage (NiaMeowDB).

C isn't a bad job. Crossbowman is sixth in both damage columns and fourth in damage per MP. It drops to C because it has no movement skill, no party tool and the lowest survival, and Iron Arrow only reaches all six targets when they stand in a line.

Best class for mobbing and solo leveling

Mobbing decides how fast you level, so it's the measure most players check first. Here is area damage on its own, with each job's attack:

Rank Job Area DPS (level 70) Attack and target cap
1 Fighter 13,287 Slash Blast, 6 targets, plus Axe Mastery bleed
2 Hunter 11,811 Arrow Bomb, 6 targets, 2-second stun chance
3 Page 11,080 Slash Blast, 6 targets
4 Fire/Poison Wizard 10,253 Poison Breath, explodes on up to 6
5 Spearman 9,875 Slash Blast, 6 targets
6 Crossbowman 9,766 Iron Arrow, pierces 6 in a line, losing 20% per target
7 Ice/Lightning Wizard 6,221 (7,775 on lightning-weak monsters) Thunder Bolt, up to 6 around you
8 Bandit 3,431 Steal, 2 targets
— Cleric, Assassin No area attack Holy Arrow and Lucky Seven hit one target

Example. You want to solo from 30 to 70 and you like range. Hunter is second for area damage and reaches 420 px, so it's the strongest ranged mobber here. The cost is survival: it has the lowest physical EHP in the game, so pick maps where monsters can't reach you. Our training guide for levels 1–70 lists the maps for each job.

Two things the table doesn't show. Teleport makes platform-heavy maps much faster for every Magician. And Cleric's Heal damages undead: NiaMeowDB counts five undead hit per cast. On the Excavation Site skeletons and the Kerning subway Wraiths, a Cleric mobs far better than its row suggests. Our elements guide lists which monsters are undead.

Best bossing class: single-target damage

Rank Job Single-target DPS (level 70) Notes
1 Bandit 5,469 Savage Blow: 6 hits, 450% in total, 28 MP
2 Assassin 4,266 Lucky Seven, two stars from 400 px
3 Fighter 4,202 Power Strike with Rage and bleed
4 Hunter 4,088 —
5 Page 4,015 Threaten lowers boss Weapon DEF for the party
6 Crossbowman 3,879 Crossbow Mastery adds 20% Critical Damage
7 Spearman 3,651 —
8 Fire/Poison Wizard 2,666 (3,332 on fire-weak) Mushmom and Stumpy are weak to Fire
9 Ice/Lightning Wizard 2,518 (3,147 on weak) Cold Beam
10 Cleric 2,193 (2,742 on undead) Holy Arrow; Shade, Zombie Mushmom and Jr. Balrog are weak to Holy

Use boss weaknesses as a tiebreaker. Mushmom (level 40) and Stumpy (level 35) are weak to Fire. Shade (48), Zombie Mushmom (55) and Jr. Balrog (80) are weak to Holy, and Shade resists Poison while Jr. Balrog is immune to it (NiaMeowDB monster pages). A boss party wants a Bandit or Assassin for damage and a Cleric for Holy and Bless. Our bosses guide lists every boss with its level, map and respawn timer.

Best class for parties and party quests

Party tools by job, from the launch skill tooltips on NiaMeowDB:

Job Party tool What it does
Cleric Heal, Bless Heals everyone nearby and damages undead; Bless cuts all damage the party takes by 15% at max
Fire/Poison and Ice/Lightning Wizard Meditation, Slow Meditation gives nearby party members +25 Magic Attack; Slow lowers speed and evasion of up to 6 monsters
Fighter Rage Raises nearby party members' Attack Power, lowers your Weapon DEF
Page Threaten Lowers Weapon DEF and speed of up to 4 monsters for every physical attacker
Assassin, Bandit Haste Party Speed and Jump; +30 Speed and +10 Jump for 300 seconds at max
Hunter, Crossbowman, Spearman None before third job Spearman's Iron Will is self-only

Nexon fixed Heal on October 8 so it can't be cast without enough MP and no longer reaches farther than intended, so stand close to your party. Our party grinding guide and the KPQ guide cover party play.

Cheapest class and safest class

Damage per MP is only part of the bill. Our class costs guide ranks every job on six cost drivers you can check in game:

Cost tier Jobs
Cheapest Cleric
Low Hunter, Crossbowman, Fighter, Page
Medium Fire/Poison Wizard, Ice/Lightning Wizard, Spearman
High Bandit
Highest Assassin (throwing stars never stop costing mesos)

Safest jobs by survival: Spearman has the most physical EHP and Cleric the most magic EHP. A Fighter or Page with a shield beats both on physical hits. Hunter and Crossbowman survive the least, so they rely on range instead.

Example. You have almost no mesos and play mostly solo. Fighter is S tier, has the best damage per MP and sits in the Low cost tier, and since Grand Launch every Warrior gets 20% to 50% more HP from each potion (Nexon). It's the best mix of strength and budget on this list.

Pick a job by your goal

Your goal Best pick Runner-up Why
Strongest all-rounder Fighter Page Lowest rank totals in the tier table
Fastest mobbing Fighter Hunter First and second for area damage
Ranged mobbing Hunter Fire/Poison Wizard Second and fourth for area damage, both ranged
Bossing Bandit Assassin First and second for single-target damage
Party and Holy bosses Cleric Fire/Poison or Ice/Lightning Wizard Heal and Bless; Meditation for Magicians
Cheapest to run Cleric Fighter Cheapest cost tier; best damage per MP
Hardest to kill Spearman Cleric First in physical and magic EHP
Moving around fast Any Magician Assassin, Bandit Teleport, then Haste

This table is a decision aid. If you enjoy a job, a B or C rating won't stop you reaching 70 with it.

Each job at a glance

Fighter (S)

Slash Blast with Axe Mastery's bleed gives the top area damage, and its damage per MP is the best in the game. Rage helps every physical attacker in the party. Final Attack: Axe is a 25% trigger that hits up to 3 for 200%. The weakness is melee reach with no Teleport or Haste. See our Fighter guide.

Page (S)

Third for area damage, second for damage per MP and third for physical EHP. Threaten lowers the Weapon DEF of up to four monsters, which helps the whole party, and a shield build is the sturdiest setup in the game. See our Page guide.

Cleric (A)

Last for damage, first for party tools, Teleport and magic survival, and the cheapest job to run. Holy Arrow is single-target, but Heal damages undead in an area. See our Cleric guide.

Assassin (A)

Second for single-target damage, from 400 px away, with Haste. It has no area attack before third job and the highest running cost. See our Assassin guide.

Fire/Poison Wizard (A)

Fourth for area damage thanks to Poison Breath's six-target explosion, with Teleport, Meditation and Slow. Damage per MP is ninth, so Blue Potions are the bill. See our Fire/Poison guide.

Spearman (A)

The highest physical EHP in the game and good damage per MP. It's mid-table for damage and has no party tool before third job. See our Spearman guide.

Bandit (B)

First for single-target damage by a wide margin, but eighth for area damage and the shortest reach. It's a boss job first. See our Bandit guide.

Ice/Lightning Wizard (B)

Thunder Bolt hits up to six monsters around you and gets 25% more on lightning-weak ones, and Teleport makes it comfortable. On a neutral target it ranks seventh for area damage, and a max Thunder Bolt costs 40 MP. See our Ice/Lightning guide.

Hunter (B)

Second for area damage and 420 px of reach, but no movement skill, no party tool and the lowest survival. Inside 65 px your bow whacks instead of shooting. See our Hunter guide.

Crossbowman (C)

The same reach and survival as the Hunter, with lower area damage because Iron Arrow loses 20% on each target it passes. It shines on long, flat maps. See our Crossbowman guide.

Best first job: levels 10 to 30

You pick a first job at level 10 and a second job at level 30, and you can't change the second job later. NiaMeowDB's level 30 benchmarks give one-minute single-target damage for a sample build of each first-job weapon:

First job Weapon and attack Damage per minute (level 30) Hits more than one?
Thief Claw, Lucky Seven 51,440 (1st) No
Thief Dagger, Double Stab 41,711 (2nd) No
Warrior Two-handed blunt, Power Strike 37,554 (3rd) Yes: Slash Blast hits 6, about 112,678 per minute
Bowman Bow, Arrow Blow or Double Shot 35,812 (6th) Double Shot hits 2
Bowman Crossbow 34,074 (7th) Double Shot hits 2
Magician Wand, Energy Bolt or Magic Claw 29,773 (10th) No

Warriors are the only first job with a six-target attack, and Magicians are the slowest until second job. The job advancement guide walks through both advancements, and our AP build guide covers stats.

Sources: Nexon's v1.0.0 maintenance notes and later notices. The NiaMeowDB figures above were updated after Grand Launch, so these changes are already counted. The bigger skill changes since the closed tests, such as Holy Arrow becoming single-target and Arrow Bomb and Iron Arrow rising to six targets, are in our launch skill changes guide. Later patches are logged in our patch notes tracker.

Third job: don't pick your main on it yet

Second job at 30 is the last advancement. Nexon's roadmap plans a third job test server for early 2027, with Ossyria (Orbis and El Nath) and live third job still undated; our roadmap guide tracks each date. Any third-job ranking you see is a guess, so pick the job you'll enjoy from 30 to 70.

Plan your three character slots

Nexon gives each account up to three characters.

  • Main: the job you'll enjoy at 60 and beyond, not just the fastest at 20.
  • Second: cover your main's gap. A Cleric next to a damage main, or a Bandit or Assassin next to a mobber for bosses.
  • Third: a cheap job such as a Hunter or Fighter can fund an expensive one like the Assassin.

Example. Two friends start together. One picks Fighter for mobbing, the other Cleric. The Fighter's Rage and the Cleric's Bless and Heal cover each other, and the Cleric brings Holy damage for Shade and Zombie Mushmom. Our first character and party plan goes deeper, and the first-week checklist covers what to do once you've picked.

If you were powerleveled or are switching mains

  • Check your skill points against a build. A rushed character often has SP in the wrong skills; the 7,000 NX SP Reset Scroll fixes that (Nexon).
  • Check your supply budget. A fast-leveled Assassin or Wizard reaches costly maps before it can pay for them. Our mesos guide covers free ways to earn.
  • Switching job? Second job can't be changed, so a new main means a new character.

FAQ

What is the best class in MapleStory Classic? Fighter. It has the lowest rank total in our tier list: first for area damage and damage per MP, third for single-target damage, and Rage helps the party. Page is the other S-tier job.

What is the best bossing class in MapleStory Classic? Bandit, whose Savage Blow does 5,469 damage per second at level 70, the most of any second job. Assassin is second. Bring a Cleric for Holy-weak bosses like Shade and Zombie Mushmom.

What is the best mobbing class in MapleStory Classic? Fighter, followed by Hunter and Page. All three hit six monsters at once, and Hunter is the best ranged choice.

What is the best class for beginners in MapleStory Classic? Fighter is strong, cheap and simple: Slash Blast and Power Strike carry you to 70, and Warrior potions heal more since Grand Launch. If you'd rather stay at range, pick a Magician for Teleport or a Hunter for reach.

Is Ice/Lightning Wizard good in MapleStory Classic? Yes for comfort, less so for raw numbers. Thunder Bolt hits six and Teleport is the best mobility in the game, but it ranks seventh for area damage on a neutral target and costs 40 MP a cast. Train on lightning-weak maps to get the 25% bonus.

Does MapleStory Classic have third job? Not yet. Second job at level 30 is the final advancement, and Nexon plans a third job test server for early 2027.
